A Counselor's Integration Of Thomism With The Philosophies Of B.F. Skinner & Albert Ellis, Leonard Alvey Sep 1976

A Counselor's Integration Of Thomism With The Philosophies Of B.F. Skinner & Albert Ellis, Leonard Alvey

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Religious counselors tend to neglect theorists who oppose religion. B. F. Skinner and Albert Ellis implicitly and explicitly criticize religion in their published writings. These criticisms are connected with their atheistic philosophies. Thomism is a theistic philosophy endorsed by the Catholic Church. Karl Rahner and Bernard Lonergan have integrated Thomism with contemporary thought. Their works serve as models for this research project--a counselor's integration of Thomism with the philosophies of B. F. Skinner and Albert Ellis.

A counselor can disconnect Skinnerian and Ellisian criticisms of religion from their atheistic philosophies. Viewing the same criticisms in the context of a theistic …

Development Of The God Concept In Children: An Exploratory Study, Dennis Feeley Aug 1976

Development Of The God Concept In Children: An Exploratory Study, Dennis Feeley

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

A study was designed to explore the developmental relationship between early childhood concepts of parent and more adult concepts of God. It attempted to identify the age at which absolute attributes such as omnipotence and ubiquity are taken away from parents and assigned to God. Based on both the theories of Freud and Piaget it was predicted that the transition will occur between the ages of four and eight. Forty children were administered an interview questionnaire and two short stories all of which depicted an attribute or characteristic which is traditionally viewed as being associated with God. Both techniques were …

Anais Nin's Under A Glass Bell : From Interior Fatality To Psychological Motion, John Harty

Master's Theses

Most of the critic ism on Anais Nin has been an overview of her entire work. Under A Glass Bell is included but, to my knowledge, no one has explored each individual story deeply enough since Nin herself recommends Under A Glass Bell as the book to begin with when reading or studying her works. Ibelieve that her recommendation is correct because Under A Glass Bell contains the nucleus of themes which she conc entrates on in all of her works, including the Diaries.

Homosexuality Among Women: Historical And Current Views In Psychology, Craig Bracy

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this review is to evaluate the methodology of past and present research with female homosexuals and then to summarize the current state of knowledge in psychology and psychiatry. The data presented in this review have been derived predominantly from material abstracted in the Medicus Index (1900-1976) and Psychology Abstracts (1927-1976).

This reviewer has established specific criteria by which all studies throughout this literature review will be examined. These are: sample size, sampling of experimental control groups, variable controlled (age, education, etc), how sexual orientation was determined, and tests and questionnaires employed, their reliability, validity, administration, and interpretation. …

Samuel Butler’S Way Of All Flesh As A Sociological Novel, David Carter Jul 1976

Samuel Butler’S Way Of All Flesh As A Sociological Novel, David Carter

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

To scholars of Victorian literature, Samuel Butler has always been a rebel who strikes out at society with wide-ranging criticism. After years of studying subjects as varied as music, art, biology, literature, and theology, Butler felt (like many Victorian writers) that he could make valuable social comments with his satires, travelogues, biological studies and one novel.

Critical studies of Butler have tended to treat in broad outline all facets of his life and work. This study, however, examines in depth Butler’s novel The Way of All Flesh, as the focal point of his critical analysis of Victorian society. It treats …

Anatomy Of The Adults Of Loxagrotis Albicosta, C.Y. Oseto, T.J. Helms

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

LEPIDOPTERA are divided into the major suborders Monotrysia and Ditrysia (Borner, 1939). The vast majority of Lepidoptera belong to the Ditrysia. The Noctuidae, which is the largest family in the order, is probably the most destructive (Metcalf, et aI., 1962). It includes Loxagrotis albicosta (Smith), the western bean cutworm, originally a pest of field beans, which has become a relatively serious pest of corn in southwestern and central Nebraska (Hagen and Roselle, 1972). Adults emerge from early July to late August, and eggs, which are deposited on the upper sides of corn leaves, hatch in approximately I week. The newly …

Fathers And Son: Conrad's The Shadow Line As An Initiation Rite Of Passage, Donald Gutierrez Jun 1976

Fathers And Son: Conrad's The Shadow Line As An Initiation Rite Of Passage, Donald Gutierrez

University of Dayton Review

Conrad's late short novel The Shadow Line, which has struck some critics as a poorly constructed romance, acquires coherence and depth when regarded as an initiation rite of passage. Indeed the ritual character of this story is so dominant in orienting the protagonist and his initiatory society significantly as to constitute the chief narrative mode in the story. Society in this fiction is divided in ways that highlight ritual features but also ironize the initiand, the initiators, and, by implication, the community, the basic triad in traditional initiation ceremony. Its ritualistic character, furthermore, is accentuated by a pattern of motifs …

Napoleon I And Education In The Sciences: One Aspect Of The Two Cultures In Conflict, Raymond J. Maras Jun 1976

Napoleon I And Education In The Sciences: One Aspect Of The Two Cultures In Conflict, Raymond J. Maras

University of Dayton Review

Several years ago the position was taken that Napoleon's patronage of the sciences when weighed against the provisions for the teaching of science in the schools seems to be in the nature of propaganda. According to the research on the subject, science, under the Napoleonic aegis, was defined in a narrow, utilitarian manner and "any attempt to institutionalize a concept of science which went beyond this utilitarianism was immediately thwarted." Hence, Napoleon's contribution was merely to continue the close link between science and the military which the Revolution introduced. In fact, in Napoleon's regime "the pursuit of a scientific education …

Four Views Of The Nature And Role Of Women In Sixteenth Century Protestantism, Lutheranism, Calvinism, Anabaptism, And English Puritanism, Marilyn Fagal Thomsen Jun 1976

Four Views Of The Nature And Role Of Women In Sixteenth Century Protestantism, Lutheranism, Calvinism, Anabaptism, And English Puritanism, Marilyn Fagal Thomsen

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Never in its fifteen-hundred year history had the Roman Catholic Church been so shaken as when, in the sixteenth century, a mere handful of men advanced the Scriptural doctrines that were to result in the rise of Protestantism. The sole authority of the Bible, the priesthood of all believers, and righteousness by faith alone rapidly took hold in a large part of Europe, especially in Germany, Switzerland, the Lowlands, and England, where the Lutherans, Calvinists, Anabaptists, and Puritans came to the fore.

Because life in the sixteenth century was so closely tied up with the church, such a revolution was …
