A Preliminary Archaeological Survey Along The Medio Creek Drainage, Southwestern Bexar County, Texas, A. Joachim Mcgraw
A Preliminary Archaeological Survey Along The Medio Creek Drainage, Southwestern Bexar County, Texas, A. Joachim Mcgraw
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
During late February, March and April of 1977, a preliminary archaeological survey was conducted along portions of Medio Creek, an intermittently running waterway in southwest Bexar County. Particular interest in this area focuses around two main elements: (1) the area of Medio Creek and southwest Bexar County in general is very poorly known archaeologically; and (2) suburban development moving westward from the city of San Antonio will shortly destroy or alter major areas of the topography near or on the creek, along with its archaeological resources. The intent of the survey was to locate archaeological sites in the area and …

The Eugene O’Neill Newsletter is the official newsletter of the Eugene O’Neill Society, an organization of scholars, theater professionals, and enthusiasts, which began meeting in 1978. Mathematics In America: The First Hundred Years, Judith V. Grabiner
Mathematics In America: The First Hundred Years, Judith V. Grabiner
Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research
There are two main questions I shall discuss in this paper. First, why was American mathematics so weak from 1776 to 1876? Second, and much more important, how did what happened from 1776-1876 produce an American mathematics respectable by international standards by the end of the nineteenth century? We will see that the "weakness" -at least as measured by the paucity of great names- co-existed with the active building both of mathematics education and of a mathematical community which reached maturity in the 1890's.
Recent Parallels Between The Philosophy Of Science And Mathematics, Joseph Spradley
Recent Parallels Between The Philosophy Of Science And Mathematics, Joseph Spradley
ACMS Journal 2004
Following World War I European philosophy of science formed an alliance with mathematics culminating in an attitude of certainty and autonomy that rejected all non empirical claims to truth and purported to make all science presupposition less. The rise and fall of logical positivism has been one of the major themes of of twentieth century thought and illustrates the danger of placing too much emphasis on science and mathematics as an ideal for all knowledge. The restriction of rational inquiry to the modes of scientific verification and the processes of mathematical logic was far too confining for the containment of …

E.W. Howe, Martin Bucco
E.W. Howe, Martin Bucco
Western Writers Series Digital Editions
Edgar Watson Howe’s quaint niche in American literary history rests squarely on his first and best novel, The Story of a Country Town (1882). In 1856 the infant Howe and his parents trekked West, "to grow up with the country.” But unlike the early work of Bret Harte, Edward Eggleston, and Mark Twain, Howe’s Country Town blasted the Jeffersonian garden with the raw winds of Darwinism and Necessity and stressed Western drabness and tragic failure. His early hardships on the land, in printshops, and at home informed both his grim fiction and his country-town journalism. Before he became celebrated in …

Paint Application: Theories And Techniques, Nancy King Mertz
Paint Application: Theories And Techniques, Nancy King Mertz
Masters Theses
Is art an inborn source of power or do daily experiences create artistic drives? I am strongly convinced there are biological forces creating these urges in all of us. Many of us, however, are denied the free expression of artistic impulse because of our compulsion toward the social concept of normality; the creative impulses are ignored until, finally, the ability and urge completely diminish.
However, states Joyce Cary, "Those of us who obtain solitude in thought, create freedom of mind; each of us is compelled to form our own ideas of things." If we wish to convey these ideas or …
