Making Curriculum Decisions And The Nature Of Mathematics, Paul Zwier

ACMS Journal 2004

This paper clearly presents eight aspects of mathematics and contrasting perspectives in each that will affect the teaching of mathematics and the design of curricula. It also presents a collection of affirmations that could reasonably characterize a Christian perspective on teaching mathematics.

Animal Stereotypes In Children’S Picture Books, Jeanna L. Massman Jan 1979

Animal Stereotypes In Children’S Picture Books, Jeanna L. Massman

Graduate Research Papers

This research was a content analysis concerned with the stereotyping of animals in children's literature. Five hypotheses were formulated on the topic. These hypotheses examined the relationship between type of characterization (animal as animal, animal as animal but talking, animal as human being) and stereotyping. The relationship between role of character (major or minor) and stereotyping and the degree of stereotyping and realism, in general, prevalent in children's picture books. The animals picked for analysis were bears, foxes, mice and rabbits. The total population of books was taken from five sources and a stratified random sample was drawn. A total …

Was The Glass Half Empty Or Half Full? A Report On Prek-12 At Kansas, Anne Chapman Jan 1979

Was The Glass Half Empty Or Half Full? A Report On Prek-12 At Kansas, Anne Chapman

Women's Studies Quarterly

Most people are familiar with the multistable image: what you look at remains the same but your perception of it changes. Some people have trouble "seeing" the alternative image, until it is pointed out to them; thereafter, their vision will switch between the two images.

For preK-12 teachers, the NWSA Convention was an experience in multistability. Nine sessions listed in the program dealt specifically with curriculum, methods, and approaches at the precollege level; and seven were actually held. Most were scheduled when public school teachers were free to attend. A few drew audiences of nearly twenty people. Yet of the …

Questioning Our Danish Heritage: The Evolution Of An Ethnic Identity, Otto N. Larsen Jan 1979

Questioning Our Danish Heritage: The Evolution Of An Ethnic Identity, Otto N. Larsen

The Bridge

Here we are over one-hundred persons ranging in age from 9 to 90 gathered for the first Pacific Northwest Danish Cultural Conference. Given the title of my remarks, I had better start with a question: why are we here?

The general answer must be that we are here to re-kindle the experience of our heritage, to learn more about it, and to enjoy our common bond. It is often said that whenever Danes get together they have a good time, even if they are melancholy about it.

The Fixed Frame And The Live Show, Johannes Knudsen Jan 1979

The Fixed Frame And The Live Show, Johannes Knudsen

The Bridge

Television has developed a trick of ending a story or a sequence by showing a fixed picture of the final frame, giving a rather vivid expression to the immediate or concluding situation. Sometimes this picture is amusing, even ludicrous, evoking a smile; sometimes a tear lingers on.

Woman, A Vehicle Of Visual Expression In Contemporary Times, Tamara C. Bogue Jan 1979

Woman, A Vehicle Of Visual Expression In Contemporary Times, Tamara C. Bogue

Masters Theses

This paper is a discussion of a woman as a vehicle of visual expression in contemporary times. Certain artists have been selected for the discussion of woman as subject matter and as symbol. An overview is given concerning some trends that have an influence on contemporary society, women in that society, and consequently affect how women have been portrayed. The selected artists were chosen as representatives of "directional types" or "theme types" and some of the implications of their female imagery is discussed. The concept of woman as symbol in her historically recorded debut as fertility figurine ("Willendorf Venus") sets …

The Child's Sex And Birth Ordinal Position: Its Effects Upon Fathers' Interaction With Their Natural Five-Year-Old Children In A Selected Provo Utah Mormon Sample, D. Wayne Brown Jr. Jan 1979

The Child's Sex And Birth Ordinal Position: Its Effects Upon Fathers' Interaction With Their Natural Five-Year-Old Children In A Selected Provo Utah Mormon Sample, D. Wayne Brown Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Thirty-nine fathers were observed to determine if they interact differently with their child as a result of the child's sex or birth ordinal position.

Results indicated that fathers expected more of their sons, had a higher readiness of explanation for them, and criticized them more often. Fathers gave more praise, physical contact and supportive behavior to their daughters. Birth ordinal effects paralleled and interacted wiith the child's sex.

Stepwise regression yielded a mean value of 44.16 in explaining the overall variance in dependent variables. It emphasized the number of hours the father spent with his child and family, the father's …
