Nancy Bartos And Students, Country School Legacy: Humanities On The Frontier

Oral Histories

Recording made by Nancy Bartos and her students at Red Bird School in Holt County, Nebraska. The students introduce themselves and each talk about something they've learned about at the school. There is also some of a school session in the second part of the recording.

No date on the recording, but presumably captured in 1980, when the Country School Legacy project was conducted.

Note: time codes in the second half of the transcript are inaccurate and reflect original sides of the tape.

A Sociological Analysis Of Criminal Aggression, William H. Rokes Jan 1980

A Sociological Analysis Of Criminal Aggression, William H. Rokes

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

After having spent over twenty years as a Police Officer and dealing with deviant and criminally aggressive people on a first hand basis my curiosity was aroused. Why do some people react so aggressively to the same stimuli that other people react calmly to? Why, under the exact same circumstances will one person resort to physical violence and deadly force when the other person may only respond in a verbal manner? Thru these years of dealing with aggressive, psychotic, and deviant people I was assaulted with various weapons both lethal and non-lethal too many numerous times to mention here. Working …

Toward Women's Studies in the Eighties: Part Two

In the last issue, we outlined a new challenge: infusing women's studies into general education and basic skills programs. Here, in an issue that includes a number of lists, we will offer one more editorially: a list of "understandings." The list below names the areas in which women's studies has developed "streams" of courses (disciplinary and interdisciplinary), and classifies areas of scholarship from which research agendas are emerging:

Toward The Development Of A Theological Critique Of Church-Growth Principles From A Seventh-Day Adventist Perspective, Terence G. Joshua Jan 1980

Toward The Development Of A Theological Critique Of Church-Growth Principles From A Seventh-Day Adventist Perspective, Terence G. Joshua

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

The Seventh-day Adventist Church perceives itself as having a unique eschatological mission. Numerical growth is an important part of the objective of the SDA Church. To attain this aim, the principles of the church-growth paradigm developed primarily at the "School of World Mission and Institute of Church Growth" at Fuller Theological Seminary, Pasadena, California, has begun to be incorporated into the North American SDA mind-set.

There is minimal documented theological reflection upon church growth done from an SDA perspective. The analysis of the distinctive issues involved yields some concepts that are theologically consistent and some that are inconsistent with …

The Church As Family: A Study Of Viability In The Smaller Local Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Kerry H. Hortop Jan 1980

The Church As Family: A Study Of Viability In The Smaller Local Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Kerry H. Hortop

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Small churches form such a large part of the Christian church, and of the Seventh-day Adventist denomination in particular, that it was felt desirable that the viability of the small church should be examined. An examination is made of current theological thought relevant to the small church. This was followed by a study both of family-style motifs and family-style practice by the church in the New Testament. Sociopsychological factors which effect and also explain the operation and "personality" of the small church are noted from relevant recent literature and studies.

Some church-growth and organizational projects involving small churches are included …

Sex, Sickness And Statehood: The Influence Of Victorian Medical Opinion On Self-Government In Utah, E. Victoria Grover-Swank Jan 1980

Sex, Sickness And Statehood: The Influence Of Victorian Medical Opinion On Self-Government In Utah, E. Victoria Grover-Swank

Theses and Dissertations

In the struggle for self-government which occupied the Mormon population of Utah between their entry into the Great Basin in 1847 and statehood in 1896, the issue of polygamy dominated public discussion. The non-Mormon population of the United States generally objected to the practice of polygamy, in large part because of Victorian attitudes towards sexual activity and the presumed physical and mental results of violating Victorian sexual norms. It was assumed by most Americans that polygamy, by violating those norms, caused real physical damage to the Latter-day Saints in Utah; damage that disqualified them from holding full and equal political …

Historic Preservation In Utah: 1960-1980, John W. Haggerty Jan 1980

Historic Preservation In Utah: 1960-1980, John W. Haggerty

Theses and Dissertations

Historic preservation in Utah from 1960 to 1980 has reflected major national trends and trends peculiar to Utah. The most important event which increased the influence of the federal government in preservation activities in Utah was the passage of the Federal Historic Preservation Act of 1966. This law influenced the Utah State Historical Society to become active in preservation in Utah. The battles to save the L. D. S. tabernacles in the 1960s and 1970s led to the formation of the Utah Heritage Foundation. This organization has been responsible for the heightened awareness of historic preservation in Utah. During the …

Herman Melville And Paul Tillich: An Ontological Interpretation Of Billy Budd, Michael E. Gress Jan 1980

Herman Melville And Paul Tillich: An Ontological Interpretation Of Billy Budd, Michael E. Gress

Masters Theses

The traditional approaches to Herman Melville's Billy Budd focus upon the question of whether or not the story was Melville's final statement of acceptance or irony. Both arguments are sociological in nature in that the different sides argue that Melville either finally accepts or continues to reject by irony, the forms of society. The acceptance critics contend that Melville ends by seeing value in the forms because of their use for maintaining order in society; the irony critics claim that Melville was taking a final satirical poke at society's limiting forms and authority.

My thesis differs from these traditional arguments …
