The Limitations Of Women In Science At Six Midwestern Colleges Due To The Adherence To Conceptions Of Gender Differences Between The Sexes In The Years Of 1880 Through 1940, Denise Mohney '91 Apr 1991

The Limitations Of Women In Science At Six Midwestern Colleges Due To The Adherence To Conceptions Of Gender Differences Between The Sexes In The Years Of 1880 Through 1940, Denise Mohney '91

Honors Projects, History

It is difficult for college students today to imagine life when the term "discrimination" had not yet been defined or conceived. Yet only a little more than a hundred years ago women were first entering the academic world alongside men. These were often middle class women whose primary interactions with men had been through courtship and marriage. It was questioned whether women's intellectual ability and physical stamina were strong enough to persevere through the college experience. Scientists and physicians, writing for the general public, cited evidence that besides physical distinctions between the sexes, there were also intellectual and emotional differences. …

Psychology, Culture And Female Texts: Brigitte Schwaiger's Wie Kommt Das Salz Ins Meer, Julienne Eden Busic

Dissertations and Theses

In recent years, there has been extensive debate in the area of literary criticism, much of it focused on real or imagined differences between male and female texts. French feminist theorists, Helene Cixous and Luce Irigaray, to name a few, argue that biological differences necessitate textual differences, while others reject this essentialist position, considering it just another means for perpetuating the notion of female inferiority. Many linguists assert that women use language differently than men, and that texts reflect these differences. But in order to analyze the origin of any textual differences, it is necessary to look beyond biology and …

Kant’S Dubious Disciples: Hare And Rawls, Edward Papa Apr 1991

Kant’S Dubious Disciples: Hare And Rawls, Edward Papa

Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

The aim of this paper is to show that Kant's Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals has set a basic pattern of research for moral philosophy, a pattern established by the structure of the text, and one which implies an overarching thesis, 'the Groundwork is divided into three sections: (1) an analysis of ordinary moral judgments which identifies their formal rule, (2) the derivation of the supreme principle of morality, and (3) the presentation of a theory of reason which grounds the possibility of moral action. Kant seeks to explain the sense in which moral action may be said to …

A Record Of The Present Moment: A Comparison Of The Early And Later Narrative Work Of Gertrude Stein, Elisa Stuber Cohen Apr 1991

A Record Of The Present Moment: A Comparison Of The Early And Later Narrative Work Of Gertrude Stein, Elisa Stuber Cohen

English Theses & Dissertations

Gertrude Stein began and ended her literary career with the narrative, a mode of discourse which she reworked and altered to fit her vision of twentieth-century reality. In her early work with the narrative (Three Lives and The Making of Americans), she reevaluated traditional techniques of plot, theme, and character and began to emphasize the textual surface over referential meaning. But feeling restricted by the narrative, Stein left it behind in search of the value of the individual word, which she thought was lost in nineteenth-century rhetoric. For the next twenty-five years, she concentrated on poetry, plays, and …

Division And Explanation In Aristotle's Parts Of Animals, Allan Gotthelf Mar 1991

Division And Explanation In Aristotle's Parts Of Animals, Allan Gotthelf

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

The nature and proper methods of logical division, διαίρεσις, are important concerns in at least four of Plato’s later dialogues, and reflections on the process may even have led Plato to a revised conception of the very nature of a Form. The place of division in Aristotle’s Topics - both in the organization of some of its materials and as the method for seeking definitions which many of the topoi are designed to regulate - suggests the importance διαίρεσις must have had in the Academy, as does the Epicrates fragment and Aristotle’s criticism of alternative views of the nature or …

War And Priorities, Glen Goodknight Mar 1991

War And Priorities, Glen Goodknight

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

The issue of our devotion of time to reading and discussing books verbally and in print is called into particular question in times of crisis such as we are experiencing now. The present struggle in the Persian Gulf intensifies a dialog, that if not stated explicitly between people, does nevertheless run continually barely below the level of our consciousness. In this time of momentous turmoil and concern, my mind returns to what C.S. Lewis said in an address he gave in September of 1939, as England was about to be plunged into the crucible of World War II. This address …
