Dialectic And Definition In Aristotle's Topics, May Sim Apr 1995

Dialectic And Definition In Aristotle's Topics, May Sim

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

The middle term between dialectic and being is definition. Definitions are formulae of essences or substances. Thus, one’s view of substance will depend on one’s view of definition: what a definition is, and how it is acquired. Further, insofar as definitions are arrived at through dialectic, definitions depend on dialectic. That is, the specific procedure of dialectic shapes the mode of definition, and the mode of definition shapes the notion of being. Not only does dialectic shape being through definition, but being and knowledge of it also determines dialectic. In short, these three things go together: dialectic, definition and being. …

The Effects Of Aerobic Exercise On State And Trait Body Image And Physical Fitness Among College Women, Sherri L. Hensley Apr 1995

The Effects Of Aerobic Exercise On State And Trait Body Image And Physical Fitness Among College Women, Sherri L. Hensley

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education

Cumulative evidence shows body dissatisfaction is a salient problem among women, and is linked to various psychological disorders and disturbances. While numerous perspectives regarding the negative body-image phenomenon exist, one area of scientific inquiry is the relationship between physical exercise and body image. With the current sociocultural emphasis on physical fitness and attractiveness, the effects of exercise on body image warrants serious consideration. The present investigation compared 57 women who participated in a 13-week aerobic exercise program to 29 sedentary control women on the following variables: state and trait body image, cardiorespiratory fitness, and body composition. The exercising women were …

The Student Movement At Old Dominion: 1964-1970, Patrick Joseph Pané Apr 1995

The Student Movement At Old Dominion: 1964-1970, Patrick Joseph Pané

History Theses & Dissertations

Old Dominion College, located in Norfolk, Virginia, experienced student unrest during the 1960s. Students at Old Dominion, like their counterparts throughout the country, challenged the university's authority and protested the war in Vietnam. This thesis will examine the student movement at Old Dominion College (which became Old Dominion University in 1969) from 1964 to 1970 and how the reactions of presidents Lewis W. Webb, Jr. and James L. Bugg, Jr. influenced student protest from 1964 to 1970. Lewis Webb, chief executive of the college from 1946-1969, tried to limit the movement's impact on campus. His policies resulted in conflicts over …

Aristotle's Child: Formation Through Genes, Oikos, Polis, Daryl Mcgowan Tress Apr 1995

Aristotle's Child: Formation Through Genes, Oikos, Polis, Daryl Mcgowan Tress

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

The discussion of children in Pol VII and the linking of nature, habit and reason supports our thesis that Aristotle has a composite conception of the child and that it can be reconstituted by way of a linked examination of his analyses in the biology, ethics and politics. The child has his or her beginnings prior to birth and grows from unfinished to finished adulthood through linked phases. Each phase of development has its own telos - the complete human animal nature at birth, the complete ethical character later on, and the cultured, educationally complete person ready for adult life in …
