Deep Ecology And Natural Resource Industries: Some Lessons From A Fishing Boat, Christopher J. Preston Jan 1996

Deep Ecology And Natural Resource Industries: Some Lessons From A Fishing Boat, Christopher J. Preston

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Commercial fishing is one natural resource industry that has so far almost escaped the attention of the deep ecology movement. In this paper I will bring fishing into the debate. However, rather than write as a supporter of the deep ecology platform making certain recommendations about how fishermen ought to behave, I write as a part-time Alaskan fisherman who is familiar with the platform but anticipates conflicts between the platform and his trade. By reversing the usual direction of critique I hope to emphasize that the practical task of changing the way the industrialized world does business can only be …

The Relationship Of Wisdom To Transformational Leadership: Illustrated By The Historical Jesus, Marykate Morse Jan 1996

The Relationship Of Wisdom To Transformational Leadership: Illustrated By The Historical Jesus, Marykate Morse

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

The shifting context of Western social structures and global inter-relatedness demands leaders who can effectively navigate systems through chaos. This study hypothesized that wisdom is the construct that enables leaders to "see" and thus interpret a beneficial path of action. The purpose of the study was to explore how psychological wisdom theory relates to transformational leadership.

The historical Jesus served as the model for this relationship. Using Biblical historical criticism, an analysis was done of Jesus' wisdom in the Jewish wisdom tradition. Jesus' wisdom was then compared to the features of psychological wisdom. Both deal with contradictions and change, exhibit …

An Essay On The Piano, Law, And The Search For Women's Desire, Julia E. Hanigsberg Jan 1996

An Essay On The Piano, Law, And The Search For Women's Desire, Julia E. Hanigsberg

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

The thesis of this essay is a simple one: to have a measure of control over her destiny, to have any choices, a woman must be a sexual agent, a subject of desire rather than an object. How can women exercise any autonomy in any other realms if in their most intimate lives they are unable to voice their desires? I do not mean to suggest that sexuality has unlimited explanatory power or that everything about women's domination can be explained by a rearticulation of desire. I do believe, however, that although the issue of sexuality is much discussed, feminist …

Mechanisms And The Nature Of Causation, Stuart Glennan Jan 1996

Mechanisms And The Nature Of Causation, Stuart Glennan

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

In this paper I offer an analysis of causation based upon a theory of mechanisms – complex systems whose "internal" parts interact to produce a system's "external" behavior. I argue that all but the fundamental laws of physics can be explained by reference to mechanisms. Mechanisms provide an epistemologically unproblematic way to explain the necessity which is often taken to distinguish laws from other generalizations. This account of necessity leads to a theory of causation according to which events are causally related when there is a mechanism that connects them. I present reasons why the lack of an account of …

Pathways To Immortality In The New Millennium: Human Responsibility, Theological Direction, Or Legal Mandate, George P. Smith Ii Jan 1996

Pathways To Immortality In The New Millennium: Human Responsibility, Theological Direction, Or Legal Mandate, George P. Smith Ii

Scholarly Articles

Often the advancement of science is blamed for a loss of religious faith. Yet, there is a contrary belief that the work of science is a primary factor for causing a greater understanding of religious truths. The scientist and the theologian both depend on experience and interpretation. They simply ask different types of questions not expecting to receive the same types of answers in return. In point of fact, there is no actual conflict between a statement of theological principle and the scientific method of inquiry.

Two futuristic challenges to the freedom of scientific inquiry and the fear these challenges …

Review Of The Letters Of George Henry Lewes, Terence R. Wright Jan 1996

Review Of The Letters Of George Henry Lewes, Terence R. Wright

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

This edition of Lewes's letters, collected from a range of libraries across the world and presented with clear introductions and notes, is a welcome resource to all readers of Lewes and Eliot. It is not a complete collection, deliberately setting out to supplement the Lewes items included in Gordon Haight's George Eliot Letters so that the two of them now provide a complete record of all Lewes's letters, or at least all the letters that Baker's widely cast net has been able to trace. Some of these (fifty-seven to be precise) are summarized rather than transcribed but the others (442 …

Review Of Fact And Feeling: Baconian Science And The Nineteenth-Century Literary, Rosalind De Sailly Jan 1996

Review Of Fact And Feeling: Baconian Science And The Nineteenth-Century Literary, Rosalind De Sailly

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

One of the latest developments in the history of ideas is the history and philosophy of science, and its increasing relevance to readers of Victorian literature is evinced by this work There is now a school of thought within George Eliot scholarship devoted to the scientific elements in her work, established by U. C. Knoepflmacher and consolidated by Gillian Beer and Sally Shuttleworth. The use of the philosophy of science as a tool to examine literary texts entails the meeting of two not antithetical disciplines, and offers a new viewpoint on Eliot that is peculiarly appropriate to a writer who …

The Twenty-Fourth George Eliot Memorial Lecture: George Eliot And The Furniture Of The House Of Fiction, John Rignall

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

In a letter to Martha Jackson of March 1841 the young Marian Evans, at the age of twenty- one, reflects on the way that a person's immediate surroundings help determine the impression that he or she makes on others:

I suppose we are all loved (or despised) a little for the sake of our circumstances as well as for our qualities .... What extrinsic charm have /, to make people care for me a little more then my qualities might deserve? Certainly none from the landscape about me, and as little from the carpets and curtains and other recommendations of …

Janet Campbell Hale, Frederick Hale Jan 1996

Janet Campbell Hale, Frederick Hale

Western Writers Series Digital Editions

In the early 1970s, at an early stage of the “Native American Renaissance,” a period that witnessed a recrudescence of tribal literary efforts, historical consciousness, and demands for civil rights, Janet Campbell Hale quietly began to make her mark on the Native American cultural landscape. A young member of the Coeur d’Alene tribe, she was then residing in the San Francisco area and had written a novel for adolescents titled The Owl’s Song, which inaugurated a noteworthy career in ethnic fiction and has gone through many printings. Like most other Native American authors, Hale has not been highly prolific …
