Suffering As The Way To God, Marjorie Shahani Oct 2024

Suffering As The Way To God, Marjorie Shahani

LMU Theses and Dissertations

As a spiritual director and Christian, I desire to accompany women on their journey to a deeper personal relationship with God holding in tension the suffering Servant on the cross and the hope in the resurrected Christ. I long to illuminate their understanding of self-sacrifice and denial. Participating in Jesus’ suffering on the cross must not lead to neglect of oneself, denial of one’s human dignity, or the tolerance of any form of abuse – physical, emotional or mental. I comprehend the redemptive power in suffering for the love of God, but I also know Christ invites us to rejoice …

The Approaches And Implications Of English Medium Of Instruction In Nepal’S Private Schools, Vivian Ko Oct 2024

The Approaches And Implications Of English Medium Of Instruction In Nepal’S Private Schools, Vivian Ko

Nepal: Development, Gender, and Social Change in the Himalaya

In this report, I discuss how English Medium of Instruction (EMI) is approached by private schools in Nepal and its implications on larger society. Nepal’s increasing demand for EMI, and thus private schools, has contributed to a variety of social issues including inaccessibility and a dying culture. By situating EMI in Nepal’s education system, I explore how the privatization of schools and the wide implementation of EMI is both a result of neoliberalism and a contributing factor to such ideologies. Observations of EMI classes and non-academic spaces on school grounds, in addition to interviews and focus groups with students and …

Hatshepsut And Akhenaten: Dualities Of Gender, Religion, And Implementation Of Queer Theory, Sadie Anderson Oct 2024

Hatshepsut And Akhenaten: Dualities Of Gender, Religion, And Implementation Of Queer Theory, Sadie Anderson

Theses

This paper discusses 18th Dynasty pharaohs Hatshepsut and Akhenaten and the images they portrayed during their reigns. Hatshepsut, though being female, adhered to the preconstructed image of a traditional male pharaoh while Akhenaten defied the long-established artistic canon in order to create a more androgynous pharaonic identity. Both did this to legitimize their rule, connect themselves to divinity, and interpret the duality of gender innate to Egyptian religion through their iconography. Hatshepsut’s masculine depictions cemented her as the father of the polytheistic Egyptian empire over which she reigned. Akhenaten’s more androgynous representations, on the other hand, portrayed him as both …

"Population Growth And Mexico's Production Of Family Planning Short Films," In Challenging Stories: Exploring The Intersections Between Health And The Humanities, Martha L. Espinosa

History Faculty publications

This chapter focuses on three family planning short films produced by the Mexican government. I interpret these films as an instrument to prompt the population to self-govern their reproduction. Relying on the definition of governmentality as “how modern forms of power and regulation achieve their full effects not by forcing people toward state-managed goals but by turning them into accomplices” (Agrawal 2005, 217), I argue that these short films sought to promote a new reproductive subjectivity among working-class urban and rural Mexicans. In other words, such reproductive subjectivity consisted of encouraging couples to have fewer children by promoting the idea …

Précis Of: "Birds, Bats And Minds: Tales Of A Revolutionary Scientist, Donald R. Griffin", Carolyn A. Ristau

Animal Sentience

Donald Griffin co-discovered bat sonar and founded the field of echolocation. He studied bird migration and founded Cognitive Ethology, the study of animal awareness and mental experiences. In all these endeavors, he faced hostile opposition. The biography (Ristau 2024) examines Griffin's life and the scientific explorations by him and others in these fields. This Précis emphasizes his arguments and supporting evidence for animal consciousness as well as his later research. Griffin considered the inhibiting assumptions made by scientists, including Cartesian views, the misunderstanding of innate behaviors, prejudice against lower animals, concern with violations of parsimony, and the assertions of the …

This article is about one tree and one cemetery plot. Though the existence of some may have been forgotten, many more burial grounds for the enslaved are known and some of these may still have trees old enough to have “witnessed” the interments of those who toiled so hard, for so long. What better way to remember their contributions to the land that continues to nourish us than by maintaining a living legacy of Witness Tree progeny?

Instagram's 2025 Terms Of Service: The Evolution Of Surveillance Capitalism And Ai Training Data, Marisol Hernandez Brito, Katherine Elkins Oct 2024

Instagram's 2025 Terms Of Service: The Evolution Of Surveillance Capitalism And Ai Training Data, Marisol Hernandez Brito, Katherine Elkins

IPHS 200: Programming Humanity

This research examines how social media platforms like Instagram’s 2025 Terms of Services (TOS) updates reflect the increasing demand for AI training data, illustrating the critical concerns about user privacy and data rights. Technology companies like Meta progressively require vast amounts of user-generated content to develop competitive AI systems to generate financial gain. Forming their data collection practices has led to their updated terms and services. In particular, their expanded AI training rights and modified dispute resolution procedures reveal the complex tension between technological advancement and user privacy. AI training data raises urgent questions about consent, ownership, and the commodification …

Psychological And Social Well-Being Of Bony Fishes In Zoos And Aquariums, Ronald G. Oldfield, Patrick Bonano Oct 2024

Psychological And Social Well-Being Of Bony Fishes In Zoos And Aquariums, Ronald G. Oldfield, Patrick Bonano

Animal Sentience

Research on the behaviour of animals in zoos has been conducted for decades, and observations have provided information that has improved the psychological and social well-being of animals. However, research on fishes in zoos and aquariums seems to be lacking. Here, we assess the current state of research on fishes in zoos and aquariums by surveying the peer-reviewed literature. Our assessment differs from previous surveys in that we examine the taxonomic classes Chondrichthyes (sharks and rays) and Osteichthyes (bony fishes) separately. Our survey finds that bony fishes have been drastically underrepresented in zoo journals, more drastically than chondrichthyans, revealing an …

The Tragedy Of Our Trajectory, Marisola Xhelili Ciaccio Oct 2024

The Tragedy Of Our Trajectory, Marisola Xhelili Ciaccio

Dissertations (1934 -)

In this project, I argue that the trajectory of Western European civilization has resulted in increasingly tragic predicaments that are not to be taken as given features of being human. Though both Ancient Western and Eastern wisdom traditions concur that suffering is a part of life, the point of living is not to suffer but to learn to overcome it and flourish. But because the purported successes of Western “progress” necessarily depend on structural oppression, and oppression produces superfluous sufferings that interfere with our capacities to actualize our freedom and flourish, they ultimately make us all worse-off. Reflecting on such …

The humanities have the potential to enhance STEM curriculum in career-oriented professional degree programs. As part of a larger college-wide initiative to develop interdisciplinary curricula, the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) awarded a grant to New York City College of Technology to explore the relationship between the humanities and career-focused degree programs in STEM departments. This article describes the design and implementation of coursework that bridges the curricular divides between humanities disciplines and technical or career-focused disciplines by bringing the humanities to bear on science and technology-oriented courses. Specifically, the humanities served to improve technical skills for students in …

Living In The Shadows: Exploring The Link Between Colonialism, Climate Change, And Women’S Vulnerability, Akash Bag, Anwesha Ghosh

Journal of International Women's Studies

The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released its sixth climate change report in early 2022. For the first time in thirty years, this report acknowledged colonial domination and global exploitation as drivers of the climate issue and contributors to the vulnerability of communities and groups. Colonialism, climate change, and women’s vulnerability are rarely discussed in the available literature. A scoping review was done to determine how colonialism makes women more vulnerable to climate change and related disasters. The study examined when and how colonialism increases women’s vulnerability in the Global North and South. Through the study, it was …

Evolving An Intersectional And Equality Approach To Addressing Issues Of Abortion In Nigeria, Ibrahim A. Obadina Sep 2024

Evolving An Intersectional And Equality Approach To Addressing Issues Of Abortion In Nigeria, Ibrahim A. Obadina

Journal of International Women's Studies

Anti-abortion regulation and criminalization in Nigeria raises questions about religious, societal, and cultural dispositions to abortion. If one defers to religious and cultural norms that are against abortion, what remains are concerns about discrimination based on gender, age, and economic status. At the regional level, the focus of abortion activism has consistently been on the legal justification for permitting abortion on recognized grounds, particularly under the African Women Protocol, known as the Maputo Protocol. This work analyzes socio-economic grounds for legal justifications for permitting abortion, focusing on how inequality and discrimination can shape the regulation and governance of abortion, especially …

This study delves into how menstruators navigate their SRH in India by examining how they adhere to traditional menstrual practices to uphold concealment norms and the politics of social respectability. The aim of the study was to analyze menstrual practices, explore the socio-cultural factors shaping the choice of menstrual products, and assess awareness regarding the toxicity of disposable menstrual products. The findings indicate that a product-centric approach to …

Emotional Display Rules Of Deaf Culture, Nicholas M. Gala, Lawrence Pick Sep 2024

Emotional Display Rules Of Deaf Culture, Nicholas M. Gala, Lawrence Pick

JADARA

Emotional display rules refer to the expression of culturally prescribed and socially acceptable emotions across different people and situations (Wu & Schulz, 2020). The display rules among hearing adults across several cultures are well defined and depend on the type of emotion, the individuals involved in the exchange, and the situation. Regarding Deaf culture in the United States, this minoritized group may follow unique display rules (Hosie et al., 2000), but there has been almost no research conducted with this population and the existing studies have focused on youth. The present study explores perceived emotional expressions among a sample of …

Underrepresentation Of Women In Stem, Ella Asare Afortor Sep 2024

Underrepresentation Of Women In Stem, Ella Asare Afortor

JWU Dissertations & Theses

Despite a plethora of initiatives undertaken by the U.S. government, corporate entities, nongovernmental organizations, and the society at large, the representation of women across various Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields remains dismally low (Martinez & Christnacht, 2021; Srivastava, 2019; Swafford & Anderson, 2020; Wright, 2018). This situation is compounded by a high attrition rate with about 50% of women leaving STEM careers by the age of 35 (Maynard, 2021). Numerous studies have highlighted the underrepresentation of women in various STEM disciplines, raising concerns about the missed opportunities for societal progress and the need for comprehensive strategies to address …

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

The current study explores the impact of teaching English language in a vocational education context by evaluating the implementation of language learning strategies (LLS) by using a TOEFL mock test. To accomplish the aims of this study, 80 students from Vocational Education Schools (VES) were engaged to respond to the Oxford Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (OSILL). The findings indicate that the differences between gender and the six parts of OSILL reveal that neither males nor females are statistically significant in any of these strategies when employed in academic English learning contexts; The significance value is p<0.05. A strong positive correlation exists between the two parts of OSILL strategies and English language proficiency. Memory strategies significantly correlate with the language proficiency of the (TOEFL).

The Semiotics Of Psychological States In International Players' Face Expressions During Qatar World Cup 2022, Mohammed Sami A-Assadi, Iman Mingher Obied

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

This study aims at applying the social semiotic theory of universal micro-expressions in international players' facial expressions during Qatar World Cup 2022. The research analyzes four basic different facial expressions (sadness, happiness, anger and surprise) at the level of similarity and some other emotions at the level of difference. Relying on Ekman's model of semiotic micro-expressions of emotion, the findings of the data analysis show that the social semiotic approach is highly effective in showing how emotions in sports contexts can be revealed and indicated through facial expressions of players and how there are similarities and differences among them reflecting …
