Journal of International Women's Studies
This study examines the representation of women living with disabilities in Shahira Al-Hassan’s novel Cochlea’s Secrets. This is an important endeavor as it highlights fiction’s role in advocating for women with disabilities, particularly in the Arab region. Such a study is crucial for increasing awareness and support for women with disabilities, especially in literary writing. Also, worldwide readers can learn about the impact of Arab novelists in supporting women with disabilities. Fiction, like the media, plays a pivotal role in promoting the status of women living with disabilities and enhancing their societal role. By addressing this topic from the perspective …

The Constitutional And Policy-Oriented Framework Of Rights, Services, And Integration Of People Of Determination In The United Arab Emirates, Muhamad Olimat, Osman Antwi-Boateng
Journal of International Women's Studies
The term “People of Determination” (PODs), coined by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) government, refers to women and men with disabilities and is articulated and inspired by the country’s history, culture, and traditions. This study aims to examine the constitutional and policy-oriented framework of PODs in terms of rights, services, and their integration process in UAE society. In so doing, it explores the UAE’s perspective on PODs in terms of conceptualization, services, framework of empowerment, institutions, rehabilitation efforts, employment, and societal integration. Although the UAE is a federal state composed of seven emirates with federal institutions, each emirate has established …

The continually growing collection includes over 200 boxes containing NASA reports, professional and personal pictures, videos, and more. Part of the collection is the approximately 700 books used for research by Stafford and his co-author Michael Cassutt to write the memoir We Have Capture: Tom Stafford and the Space Race (2002). Half of these books are a collection of Soviet-era Russia (USSR) space program books and periodicals written in Russian. Racing Latinidad, Renee Hudson
Racing Latinidad, Renee Hudson
English Faculty Books and Book Chapters
This chapter argues that the terms “Latinx” and “latinidad” are messy signifiers that allow us to contend with Latinx’s complicated racial history. While the term Latinx continues to be controversial, and scholars such as Tatiana Flores have examined the case for cancelling latinidad, “Racing Latinidad” points to how latinidad can signify particular political commitments and affinities. Through readings of Manuel Muñoz’s What You See in the Dark (2011) and Dahlma Llanos-Figueroa’s Daughters of the Stone (2009), this chapter illuminates how excavating racial histories outside the logic of the state is a way to summon a politics to imagine a people. …

Alfred Russel Wallace Notes 32. Wallace On The Tigers Of Singapore, Charles H. Smith
Alfred Russel Wallace Notes 32. Wallace On The Tigers Of Singapore, Charles H. Smith
Faculty/Staff Personal Papers
Historian John van Wyhe has written a good deal on Alfred Russel Wallace’s travels in the Malay Archipelago in the 1850s and 1860s, in so doing coming to a number of generally derogative surmises on Wallace’s thoughts and collecting efforts that disagree with the conclusions made by other scholars. In this work one example of such treatment is given, concerning Wallace’s estimation of the number of persons in Singapore attacked by tigers over the middle years of that century.

Can We Use Judgement Bias To Assess The Welfare Of Fish In Aquariums And Zoos?, Culum Brown
Can We Use Judgement Bias To Assess The Welfare Of Fish In Aquariums And Zoos?, Culum Brown
Animal Sentience
This commentary examines the potential of tests of judgment bias to assess fish welfare in aquariums and zoos. Judgment bias offers a non-invasive approach to interpreting affective states in animals, using cognitive responses to ambiguous stimuli as indicators of mental wellbeing. Despite the constraints of captive environments—such as limited handling and species diversity in exhibits—recent adaptations of judgment-bias protocols make them suitable across taxa, including fishes. Collaborations with progressive zoos and aquariums could facilitate this research, based on the shared goal of enhancing animal welfare and promoting public education.

Ai And The Future Of Library Accessibility: Making Digital Promotions Inclusive, Soraya Hariyani Putri Ms, Syifa Adiba Ms
Jurnal Ilmu Informasi, Perpustakaan, dan Kearsipan
The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has transformed various sectors, including the field of library and information science. Libraries, as custodians of knowledge and cultural heritage, are increasingly utilizing AI to enhance their services, particularly in the realm of digital promotions. However, there remains a significant challenge in making these promotions accessible to all users, especially those with disabilities. Despite advancements in AI, digital content produced by libraries often lacks inclusivity, particularly in catering to the needs of users with disabilities. This gap not only limits access to library services but also hinders the broader mission of libraries to serve …

Waking Up Before We Die: Aging And Spirituality, Marcelline Hutton
Waking Up Before We Die: Aging And Spirituality, Marcelline Hutton
Zea E-Books Collection
In retirement, I have more time for prayer and reflection, to rest in the Lord, and hence to have my spirit renewed. We choose how we interpret our situations. Positive, spiritual aging ideas enhance our sense of well-being. Of course, the loss of loved ones decreases our sense of self-worth at times, but the Spirit can renew us. As Genesis reminds us, God was still working in the lives of Sarah and Abraham in old age, and they can serve as models for us. Indeed, Sarah laughed at the angels and shows us how humor exists even as we age. …
Statues In Plutarch's Lives, Donald Lateiner
Statues In Plutarch's Lives, Donald Lateiner
New England Classical Journal
This article surveys where Plutarch mentions statues in the Lives and how they enrich his biographies. He alludes to statues in introductions, after death in conclusions, and in synkriseis. 1] They describe his subjects’ appearance. 2] They expressed community appreciation. 3] After some Hellenic and Roman honorands lost favor or were assassinated, their images suffered destruction. 4] Several communities compensated victims for ignominy by replacing their statues. 5] Several subjects erected statues as propaganda. 6] Several “heroes” address other men’s statues. 7] Statues or their absence counterpoint deaths and funerals. 8] Statues ironically embody excessive ambition. 9] Subsequent ancient …

Embodiment And Ritual Clothing: Dressing The Israelite High Priest, Ally Huffmire
Embodiment And Ritual Clothing: Dressing The Israelite High Priest, Ally Huffmire
Studia Antiqua
Exodus 28 and 39 contain a detailed description of the clothing God instructed to be made and worn by Israelite priests. In this essay, sacred clothing will be understood through the lens of ritual studies, characterizing clothing with a sense of liminality that defines and endows the human wearer with identity and power. The social meanings and implications of the high priest’s dress will be reconstructed by engaging in sensory criticism, drawing upon insights from the greater eastern Mediterranean world. Given the ancient world’s unique conception of a permeable body, ritual clothing had the ability to imbue the wearer with …

Analyzing Andrea Yaryura Clark's On the Night of a Thousand Stars, this book review essay places the novel taking place during Argentina's Dirty War and examines its quality for teaching readers about the military junta that ruled the country in the late 1970s and 80s. By examining historical events and how they affect each character in the novel, the author evaluates and compares each with how they are portrayed in history. In addition to these evaluations, the author also reflects on his own experience in learning about Argentina's Dirty War for the first time in a Latin American History …
