The analysis of the security, civil-military relations, and governance crises in Africa generally takes for granted the post-colonial arrangement and uses the nation-state as the unit of analysis. Invariably, the prescriptions never go beyond the confines of what could be dubbed the "Berlin Confcrence/OAU framework." The daunting security challenges Africa faces as the 21st century gets under way necessitate bold, "off the beaten path" analysis and solution that move beyond this framework and the restrictions of the antiquated principles and notions on which it is predicated: the sacrosanct national sovereignty and the "national" army as its symbol. This thesis explores the dynamic interplay between consciousness and unconsciousness and how this relationship influences visual language in my art practice. My research investigates how unconscious impulses and conscious choices intersect in the creative process, shaping artistic expression and viewer interpretation. Humor has long occupied a complicated place in systems of power, sometimes reinforcing oppressive norms and other times offering a way to push back against them. This thesis explores how the archetype of the jester can be used in drama therapy to help individuals reclaim agency within misogynistic structures. Drawing from role theory, feminist performance studies, and Theatre of the Oppressed, the project examines how jestering, through satire, parody, and play, can act as a vehicle for resistance, healing, and empowerment. The goal of this thesis was to understand the impact that perimenopause and the COVID-19 pandemic have on individuals and how existential theory and dance/movement therapy can be applied to enhance quality of life. The literature review first explores historical and current contexts of perimenopause. The second section covers the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on caregiving individuals, particularly women. Subsequent sections introduce existential theory and dance/movement therapy frameworks, with a concentration on relevant concepts for the specified population. The therapeutic alliance is a well-studied, empirically based phenomenon with much research evidencing its importance in successful therapy. The triadic multi-dimensional relationship present in drama therapy, one of the seven core processes at work in drama therapy, has been identified as a significant agent contributing to the client’s therapeutic change. However, no data specifically compares the therapeutic alliance to the multi-dimensional relationship. Trump’s presidency created a heightened scrutiny of immigrants, specifically Latin American immigrants, as his initiative focused on building a wall on the Mexico-US border. Trump’s extreme xenophobic speech was disseminated by the media, influencing the public to perceive Latin American immigrants as dangerous individuals responsible for violent crime. This is despite Latin American immigrants committing crimes at lower rates than native-born citizens. Further, his presidency continued the American criminalization of immigration as he enacted punitive and discriminatory policies and legislation. Exposure to intimate partner violence (IPV) is widespread in childhood, but it is generally higher among African American children. Extensive qualitative analyses to understand the experiences of youth who have experienced IPV have suggested that help-seeking is vital to the survival rate of African American women. Nonetheless, most studies have involved mainly White participants from two-parent households. The current research included African American women who experienced IPV. Social learning theory was used in this study to describe the participants’ behaviors and experiences with IPV. Do Firms Have Preferences In Hiring By Gender? Evidence From Kenya, Richard Agesa

Journal of African Policy Studies

While issues of employment segregation by gender have been extensively studied in developed countries of the West, few such studies have been conducted in the developing economies of Africa. This paper fills this gap by examining gender imbalances in hiring decisions by firms in non identical industries using the most recent data from Kenya. The findings suggest that women are more likely to find employment in agricultural based industries and in industries with tasks that require human contact. In contrast, men tend to be hired in industries that not only perform physically demanding tasks, but also require continued work experience.

Exploring themes of identity, displacement, gender, and belonging, this paper examines the artist's work and her approach to her art. She covers the many influences that she has access to while unable to visit her ancestral homelands. This thesis analyzes Frida Kahlo’s representations of miscarriage, childbirth, and breastfeeding as departures from idealized portrayals of womanhood in post-revolutionary Mexico. Drawing on Catholic and Mesoamerican imagery, Kahlo reframes the maternal body as a site of resistance, engaging mexicanidad (Mexicanness) to counter its patriarchal constructions of national identity and gender.

This thesis examines how contemporary Chinese artists use food as a medium to explore ritual, trade, politics, and cultural identity. Centering on The Note of Food, an exhibition I curated, it draws on Arjun Appadurai’s concept of gastro-politics and Lu Xun’s nalaizhuyi (“grabbing doctrine”) to analyze how artists strategically appropriate cultural resources amid tensions between East and West, and tradition and modernity. This essay analyzes Benjamin Mays' 1954 sermon to the World Council of Churches to argue that Black preaching offers a radical response to perspectives that portray racial justice advocacy as antithetical to the Christian Gospel. Through a close reading of Mays' sermon, the authors contend that Mays employs an implicit ontological metaphor, “Jesus is integrated,” to position racial integration and justice not only as civic responsibilities but as Christian duties. The sermon disrupts hegemonic ideologies that marginalize others, mobilizes the organizing power of the church, and positions churches as spaces for radical worldmaking around race.
