Blurred Relationships: The Factual Fiction Of John Edgar Wideman, Melissa Bakeman Hartmann
Blurred Relationships: The Factual Fiction Of John Edgar Wideman, Melissa Bakeman Hartmann
Theses Digitization Project
Control is a central issue in any text: does the author's intention or the reader's interpretation better explain the resulting meaning of the text? This question has long been the subject of debate among textual theorists; this essay proposes a middle ground, namely that the author and the reader engage in a collaborative effort to make meaning in a text.
Transforming America: The University As Public Good, Nancy Cantor
Transforming America: The University As Public Good, Nancy Cantor
Imagining America
Nancy Cantor, chancellor and president of Syracuse University, outlines a number of bold campus-communitypartnerships, many of which were integral to the Brown v. Board of Education Commemoration at the University of Illinois. She makes a passionate case for the arts as “a context for exchange” and “a medium for participation” in a society where “pervasive and longstanding racial divides” exist. In response, Kristina Valaitis, director, Illinois Humanities Council, asks tough, affectionate questions of her university-based colleagues, and offers “suggestions for action,” including some pointed advice on the tenure system

Kuhn's Paradigm As A Parable For The Cold War: Incommensurability And Its Discontents From Fuller's Tale Of Harvard To Fleck's Unsung Lvov, Babette Babich
Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections
In a journal issue dedicated to a discussion of Steve Fuller's Thomas Kuhn: A Philosophical History for Our Times, I argue that Kuhn’s limited acknowledgment of Fleck’s influence on his The Structure of Scientific Revolutions was due to a foundational incommensurability between the standard conceptual framework for philosophical studies of science and Fleck’s historico-social and praxis-oriented approach to scientific progress. The incommensurability in question constituted an insurmountable tension between the kind of language and thinking manifest in Fleck’s study and the conceptual language evident in Kuhn and characteristic of one might still call the received view’ in philosophy of science. …

No Woman Is An Object: Realizing The Feminist Collaborative Video, Alexandra Juhasz
No Woman Is An Object: Realizing The Feminist Collaborative Video, Alexandra Juhasz
Publications and Research
Feminist video does collectivity exceedingly well. Certainly other politicized cultural movements and individuals work through this method, and, of course, feminists also produce work in collaboration in film and other media (as Julia Lesage testifies above). However, I assert that there is a profound natural mechanics to women's work in video that makes the medium's method, theory, and theme the interactive and politicized subjectification of the female sex. Film and patriarchy share the project of women's objectification-they make victims. Video and feminism see women as complex, worthy selves-they produce subjects. In feminist collaboration: video, the medium (inexpensive, debased, nonprofessional), the …

On 20 April 1999, in one of the deadliest school shootings in national history, two students at Columbine High School in Littleton, Jefferson County, Colorado, killed twelve fellow students and a teacher and injured twenty-three others before committing suicide. Eric Harris, age eighteen, and Dylan Klebold, age seventeen, used homemade bombs, two sawed-off twelve-gauge shotguns, a nine-millimeter semiautomatic rifle, and a nine-millimeter semiautomatic pistol in a siege that began shortly after 11 A.M.

History Faculty Publications
Nicola Sacco, a skilled shoeworker born in 1891, and Bartolomeo Vanzetti, a fish peddler born in 1888, were arrested on 5 May 1920, for a payroll holdup and murder in South Braintree, Massachusetts. A jury, sitting under Judge Webster Thayer, found the men guilty on 14 July 1921. Sacco and Vanzetti were executed on 23 August 1927 after several appeals and the recommendation of a special advisory commission serving the Massachusetts governor. The execution sparked worldwide protests against repression of Italian Americans, immigrants, labor militancy, and radical political beliefs.

Journal of Hate Studies
There are many people who would rather not look at the issue of hate, and cannot understand why there is a need for an Institute for Action Against Hate. In the struggle to combat hate, it must be identified—and named for what it is—before it can be prevented. Gonzaga University’s Institute for Action Against Hate was founded in 1998 with the purpose of fighting hate through education, research, and advocacy. Its genesis derived from concerns surrounding the apparent increase in the phenomenon of hate—especially racial and religious hate—as it manifested itself on campuses and in communities throughout the country. The …

Engendering Hate Crime Policy: Gender, The "Dilemma Of Difference," And The Creation Of Legal Subjects, Valerie Jenness
Journal of Hate Studies
Nearly six years after two women were bound and gagged and had their throats slit while camping and hiking in Shenandoah National Park, U.S. Attorney General John D. Ashcroft held a historic nationally televised press conferenceon April 11, 2002 to announce that the U.S. Justice Department invoked the federal hate crimes statute for the first time to charge the alleged murderer with hate crime. In announcing the indictment, Ashcroft spoke at length about his meeting with the parents of the victims and about the lives and characters of the young women: two Midwesterners who migrated to New England, met and …
