As part of its larger Diversity Initiative, the McCormack Graduate School of Policy Studies at UMass Boston has undertaken a number of projects. The first was a public opinion survey conducted around the time of the November 2006 elections. The report, Transformation and Taking Stock: A Summary of Selected Findings from the McCormack Graduate School Diversity Survey, included a comprehensive look at race relations in the Commonwealth at a time of significant transition—demographically and politically. Lacole And Other Stories: Adaptations Of Three Of Edgar Allan Poe's Short Stories, Bethany Morgan

All Theses

This Master's thesis contains a creative adaptation of three of Edgar Allan Poe's short stories: 'Ligeia,' 'The Pit and the Pendulum,' and 'The Purloined Letter.' The stories reflect on certain elements from Poe's writings, but also stand alone as creative works. If the reader has never read Poe's stories, he or she will still understand and enjoy my stories. If the reader has read Poe's stories, he or she will enjoy the new approach to an old idea. The scholarship of my thesis delves into the art of adaptation, the psychological depths of some characters, the smaller judgments of civil …

Experiences Of Women War-Torture Survivors In Uganda: Implications For Health And Human Rights, Helen Liebling-Kalifani, Angela Marshall, Ruth Ojiambo-Ochieng, Nassozi Margaret Kakembo

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper will describe the resulting long-term health needs of women war-torture survivors of the civil war years in Luwero District, Uganda. To do this sections of case studies from interviews carried out in Kikamulo Sub-County, Luwero, are utilised. The effects of gender-based violence and torture and its long term, severe and enduring impact on women’s health will be highlighted. In 1994, the Centre for Health and Human rights at Harvard University led the first international conference on health and human rights. Low-Income Women's Access To Education? A Case Study Of Welfare Recipients In Boston, Erika Kates Apr 2007

Low-Income Women's Access To Education? A Case Study Of Welfare Recipients In Boston, Erika Kates

Publications from the Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy

In 2003 and 2004, the Massachusetts legislature dramatically changed state law to allow welfare recipients to engage in education and training to fulfill their mandatory work requirements. The research reported here had as its goal to document whether women who received welfare benefits between 2003 and 2006 knew about, and took advantage of, these historic changes. A fundamental supposition of the research described here is that low-income women should have access to substantive educational opportunities to improve their employment and earnings; raise children with educational aspirations and achievements; enhance their civic participation; and contribute to the state’s human capital resources.

The Costs Of Inadequate Education For New York State, Clive R. Belfield

Policy Documents

This paper calculates the economic consequences for the state of New York from failing to ensure that all students graduate from high school. The analyses in this report indicate that there are substantial economic benefits from raising the rate of high school graduation for New York state. These benefits can therefore be interpreted as the maximum amount that could be spent by federal and state/local governments on educational programs to improve the graduation rate.
