Motivation In Character, M. Rosita Jul 1931

Motivation In Character, M. Rosita

Bachelors’ Theses

WHAT IS CHARACTER? Dr. John Dewey puts it down as a commonplace that the end of all schoolwork is the development of character, but the difficulty lies in the execution of it. He gives as the reason for this difficulty of execution, the fact that we have not a clear conception of what character means. "We know what character means in terms of the actions which proceed from it, but we have not a definite conception of it on its inner side, as a system of working forces."

To make a study of this system of inner forces has been …

Rene Bazin Presented As An Anti-Naturalist, Genevieve Coffey May 1931

Rene Bazin Presented As An Anti-Naturalist, Genevieve Coffey

Bachelors’ Theses

In this thesis I propose by a study of the works and life of Rene Bazin to present him as representative in the movement against the tenets of Naturalism, that is, to present Rene Bazin as an anti-naturalist. The method that I used was to examine the novels of Bazin, to read criticisms of his theory and that of the Naturalists, particularly of Zola and the Goncourts.

Creative Education, Clara K. Sterk Apr 1931

Creative Education, Clara K. Sterk

Bachelors’ Theses

How can we expect to know and understand, much less enjoy the real child in the atmosphere of rigid formality of the traditional school? By stressing the acquisition of knowledge and information, the development of skills and habits, an appeal is made only to the child’s intellectual nature. Thus, we overlook the fact that the child is a personality with more than a memory side; that he is a being com¬ posed of a body and a soul, a mind and a will, which must be trained if he is to live a full life. For the complete realization of …

Testimonials For The Lutheran Position In Education, P E. Kretzmann Mar 1931

Testimonials For The Lutheran Position In Education, P E. Kretzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

We Lutherans of the Synodical Conference are sometimes inclined to be somewhat apologetic with regard to our whole system of religious instruction. This is true even of our catechetical training in preparation for the rite of confirmation and the admission to adult or communicant membership in the Church. How else shall we explain the lowering of standards of indoctrination, particularly in adult classes? And yet, apart from Scripture precept and example, we have the support of some of the staunchest champions of the Bible, as when J. Gresham Machen writes, in his book What is Faith? (p. 150 f.) : …
