This community service program aims to enhance the understanding of elementary school students in Kampung Tugu Portugis regarding the importance of Cultural Heritage and Intangible Cultural Heritage in their environment. Kampung Tugu is a historic area shaped by the cultural fusion of Portuguese Mardijkers and the Betawi community. Based on interviews with local sources, it was found that there is a lack of cultural heritage education among the younger generation, particularly at SDN Semper Barat 01. The program activities included educational sessions, site visits, the creation of pocketbooks, a performance of Tugu keroncong music, and the development of a wall …

Mobilizing Discord On The United States’ Many Borders: Critical Social Science And Geopolitical Complexity, Margath Walker
Mobilizing Discord On The United States’ Many Borders: Critical Social Science And Geopolitical Complexity, Margath Walker
Midwest Social Sciences Journal
Attention to the political landscape connecting the United States, Mexico, and Central America has returned with glaring intensity, highlighting the visibly geostrategic elements of bordering practice. Scholars have focused on how state power materializes at multiple scales while at the same time being attentive to the contestable and mutable nature of myriad agentic forces. This talk operates similarly by considering prospects for a frictional and at times ambiguous spatial politics. I extend the notion of discord as a productive lens through which to consider securitization, mobility, and migration. I use two short examples—the border-industrial complex and migrant caravans—to illustrate my …

The Twelve Steps Of Emily, Emily Chick
Master's Projects
The methodology of this project aims to showcase the complex overlapping of Kavan and my life through the lens of Affect Theory, and memoir. My goal is to tie together our lives through a kinship that is rooted in historical resonance and explained through the relationship of emotion and behavior analyzed in Affect theory. I want to pull my audience through a troubling reality, dealing with the active decision to forget or remember our past, and how we behave moving forward based on such a decision. My other motivation for choosing this style is to showcase the growth of my …

Some brief introductory information is given on the origins of the Sundanese short story in the early twentieth century and its subsequent development up to the present. A translation of the story given parallel to the …
Sundanese Performing Arts In The Us As Legacy Of The Center For World Music, Kathy Foley
Sundanese Performing Arts In The Us As Legacy Of The Center For World Music, Kathy Foley
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
Presentation of Sundanese arts in the US by non-Sundanese grew from a program of the Center for World Music (CWM), an incubator for Sundanese performing arts practice in the San Francisco Bay area in the 1970s. Those (both Sundanese and American) coming out of that encounter engaged in intercultural teaching and performance of music, dance, and wayang (puppet/human dance theatre) in the US in the then developing programs leading to a BA or graduate degree in ethnomusicology, dance, or theatre arts. Performances by Sundanese gamelan groups with American artists in and beyond the university also developed. While such groups persist, …
Contemporary Sundanese Quran; A Departure Or Divine Proximity?, Taufiq Hanafi
Contemporary Sundanese Quran; A Departure Or Divine Proximity?, Taufiq Hanafi
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
The Sundanese are deeply immersed in Islam, as exemplified by the adage, “to be Sunda is to be Muslim”. An important initiative within this cultural-religious context is the translation of the Quran into low vernacular Sundanese, departing from the formal and codified language forms of the original. Despite concerns about potential textual transgression, this translation negotiates linguistic barriers and reinforces cultural identity within the Islamic framework. This paper examines the contemporary Sundanese translation of the Quran, Ayat Suci Lenyepaneun (1989), and argues that its use of low colloquial Sundanese not only enhances the Quran’s legibility but also establishes an immediate …

Youth violence is a societal concern in the United States due to its negative consequences on individuals and communities. The current study aimed to examine the potential mitigating factors of violence prevention programs and religiosity in reducing youth violence among African American, White, Hispanic, and Asian American adolescents in the United States. It also tested the moderation effects of sex on religiosity and violence prevention programs with youth violence. Results of the main effects revealed that adolescents who attended violence prevention programs were generally less likely to engage in violence than those who did not; and that adolescents who were …

The development of digital technology, while offering many conveniences, has also led the younger generation to become overly absorbed in their gadgets. Many young people today find it difficult to detach themselves from their devices. This situation can have negative effects on children's psychological development, as they need both motor and social stimulation. Traditional children's games offer significant benefits for physical and mental growth. Coinciding with the Summer Solstice event in Borobudur—when the Moon is positioned directly above Borobudur's coordinates—the Summer Solstice Festival was held in Karangrejo Tourism Village, Magelang. In support of this festival, a community service program was …

Detangling Beauty, Curly Hair, And Race: (Re)Interpreting Beauty And Latinx Racial Identities Through Natural Hair Narratives, Katie Duarte
Latin American and Latino/a Studies: Faculty Publications
The natural hair movement aims to encourage people from the Black diaspora to embrace their natural afro-textured hair, which has facilitated a cultural change in the United States. This article asks how Dominican and Dominican-American women in New York City interpret the racialized and gendered discourse through narratives about their hair. Dominican racial identity has historically relied on a rhetoric of Indo-Hispanicity (“brownness”) for its simultaneous proximity to whiteness and distance from Blackness. However, afro-textured hair is becoming more popular among Dominicans in the Dominican Republic and the United States. This article utilizes hair as a cultural tool to trace …

The objective of this article is to present the results of a qualitative study conducted with around ten artists. The issue addressed is as follows: How are the practices of young artists affected by the visibility carried out by/on social networking sites (SNS)? We start from the premise that an artist's relationship with SNS should be viewed not as a given, but as a construct subject to the influence of factors both intrinsic and extrinsic to the artist. Theoretically, we consider that the sociology of uses provides a suitable analytical framework to frame the normativity of this digital environment alongside …

This article examines the evolution, challenges, and future directions of digital humanities (DH), an interdisciplinary field reshaping the humanities and social sciences (HSS) by integrating digital technologies. Through five key axes, it delves into their interdisciplinarity, historical development, cultural and communicative impacts, their relationship with individuation theories, and practical applications in disciplines like history, sociology, and education. The article emphasizes that DH is not merely about using digital tools but about redefining research methodologies, cultural practices, and communication in an increasingly digitized world. Concluding with a discussion on future challenges, such as the integration of artificial intelligence, ethical considerations around …

Artificial intelligence (AI) encompasses several areas, such as university teaching. Our axiological reflection assesses ethics in the academic action of students.e.s. Based on the assumption that AI alters real intelligence and ruins human consciousness, we conducted a survey to see if students who exploit AI care about the ethical criterion in their practice. In order to provide answers, we have used a mixed methodological approach, quantitative and qualitative, linking questionnaires and semi-directive maintenance. We have found that ethics is overshadowing the preponderance of the search for information.

Digital humanities, an emerging field of research, combines digital tools and traditional methods to explore various domains such as education, art, history, languages, and sociology. In education, they promote personalized and interactive approaches, while in art, they enable new forms of expression and creation. For history, they offer new perspectives on the past, and in linguistics, they improve understanding and dissemination of languages. In sociology, they introduce new methods for studying societies. More than just a technological evolution, digital humanities challenge the epistemological foundations of disciplines and act as a lever for social transformation. They mark a decisive turning point …
Cuju: The Ancient Chinese Game That Held An Empire Together, Enzo H. Smith
Cuju: The Ancient Chinese Game That Held An Empire Together, Enzo H. Smith
Young Historians Conference
This paper explores how cuju, an ancient sport known as the predecessor of modern football, evolved from the Han to Song dynasties (206 BCE–1368 CE) as a unifying force in imperial China. Calling upon primary sources such as ancient cuju manuals and various art pieces suggests this sport's importance went beyond a leisurely practice. Using academic journals about Chinese history and the development of cuju from different academic fields and, most notably, the FIFA museum’s online exhibit of cuju, the reason cuju had such a strong place of value in Chinese society was apparent. Beginning as a combat exercise in …

Entheogens: The Hallucinogenic Plants That Shaped Religion, Nicolas A. Michaud
Young Historians Conference
Entheogens have played a pivotal role in religious and spiritual practices across diverse cultures, aiding in the pursuit of divine connection and higher consciousness. Evidence suggests that dating as far as back as a million years ago, early human species such as Homo erectus and Homo habilis experimented with hallucinogenic plants like psilocybin mushrooms, introducing the earliest forms of shamanic practices. As societies became more structured, the use of entheogens expanded throughout various parts of society. In ancient Greece, oracles utilized plants like henbane to communicate with the divine, molding military and political policy. During the Middle Ages, Tibetan Buddhism …

Exposing The Truth Behind The Stanford Prison Experiment, Leo Novack
Young Historians Conference
In 1971 Philiip Zimbardo, a Stanford University professor, designed an experiment to study human behaviors in the prison system. He sought to understand the effectiveness of the prison system, however, the experiment ended early due to the ethical concerns toward participants. It is considered one of the most important psychological experiments, not for what it helped reform, but for what it pointed out about the importance of safety for research participants. Calling upon primary sources from participants and the researchers’ findings, as well as secondary sources primarily from psychologists and research ethics, the research reveals that this study was unreliable …

How The Cheating Of East And West Germany Reveals A Global Trend Of Doping In International Sports, Olivia L. Cheng Miss
Young Historians Conference
In 1989, the Berlin Wall fell, representing the end of both a deep physical and ideological divide between East and West Germany. The fall of the Berlin Wall revealed a state-sponsored doping program in East Germany created in order to compete for the political and economic symbol of strength: Olympic medals. Years later, the exposure of widespread West German doping in competitions shows the capacity of cheating to spread like a pathogen, passed from one nation to another in a pattern still visible today. Though East and West Germany were the epicenter of the doping outbreak, the trend spread globally …
