Pastoral Perceptions Of Formal Mental Health Training In The Black Church, Monique Bethea-Covington Aug 2024

Pastoral Perceptions Of Formal Mental Health Training In The Black Church, Monique Bethea-Covington

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This purpose of this phenomenological study is to broadly explore the role of the Black Church in providing mental health support by facilitating linkages to professional mental health services by exploring pastoral perceptions of mental health through examination of their experiences with church members. Ten African American pastors of Black Churches in North and South Carolina completed semi-structured, qualitative interviews describing their backgrounds, attitudes, and their mental health experiences within the church. Many of the respondents reported having members of their congregation disclose challenges or difficulties with their mental health. Most of the pastors reported that they understood the need …

Bergen Koster, Debra, Sophia Maier Garcia

Bronx Jewish History Project

Debra Bergen Koster was born in the Bronx at Bronx Lebanon Hospital on December 14, 1955. Her family moved to the Bronx in the 1930s and she grew up there until 1964, living on Shakespeare Avenue in a predominantly Jewish and Irish neighborhood. Bergen Koster recalls a close-knit community, where her family experienced significant events like the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. She also has fond memories of local spots like Featherbed Lane, where she would run errands for her mother, and of communal activities like playing on the streets with friends and attending local events.

In 1964, her …

Mobilizing Feminist Politics In Yugoslavia: Sanja Iveković And Vlasta Delimar’S Performance Art., Candyce Sturgeon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the radical performance works of Yugoslavian artists Sanja Iveković and Vlasta Delimar. Three performances by each artist are analyzed and juxtaposed with one another. These performances include Triangle, 1979, He is Looking at Me all the Time, 1979, and Nessie, 1981 performed by Sanja Iveković along with This was Me in 1980 when Comrade Tito Died, 1980, Visual Orgasm, 1981, and Tied to a Tree, 1985 performed by Vlasta Delimar. Throughout the paper I argue that these performances by Iveković and Delimar, along with their differing stances on feminism, create a multifaceted …

Students As Faculty Gender Equity Allies: Mitigating Students’ Gender Biases Through Short-Term Awareness-Intervention And Long-Term Research Literacy Training, Li-Yin Liu, Christopher Brough, Dongfang Gaozhao, Hannah Kling, Isabella Thomeier, Veronica Vasko

Reports from the Gender Equity Research Fellowship

This report investigates four interrelated questions: 1) Do gender biases influence the University of Dayton (UD) undergraduate students’ evaluations of the credibility of gender-related research? 2) If such biases exist, can SSC 200 effectively reduce them? 3) Can awareness raising intervention reduce biases in how students evaluate their professors’ teaching effectiveness? 4) Do professors’ identities, including gender and racial ethnicity, affect students’ course enrollment preferences?

To answer these questions, we conducted three separate, but interrelated, studies. The first study aims to address whether UD students have gender bias when evaluating the credibility of information and if short term and long-term …

Informed Consent Document Delivery: Effects On Appalachian Caregivers' Comprehension, Trust In Researchers, And Willingness To Participate, Tess A. Simpson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether altering an informed consent document (ICD), in ways that either promote or inhibit accessibility, would affect potential participants’ willingness to participate in a child development laboratory-based study. Specifically, I was interested in assessing the willingness to participate of historically underrepresented groups, especially Appalachian caregiver-child dyads. I altered three parameters of a previously approved and employed ICD to explore whether these parameters impacted Appalachian caregivers’ comprehension of the study, willingness to participate, and trust in the researchers. The manipulated parameters included reading level, utilization of illustrative pictures, and inclusion of text-to-speech …

How Housing Insecurity And Welfare Systems Retraumatize Women In Southern California, Yesika Menera Jul 2024

How Housing Insecurity And Welfare Systems Retraumatize Women In Southern California, Yesika Menera

McNair Summer Research Program

Studies show that individuals experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity also experience trauma and mental illnesses. Despite this evidence, many resources provided through state welfare services seldom allocate sufficient funds and personnel to help address mental health. This study investigates the relationship between housing insecurity and trauma for adult women who have tried to access assistance throughout Southern California. To do this, I conducted in-depth interviews and DSM-5 questionnaires with twenty-six women during the summer of 2023 and 2024 via Zoom. My findings show that adult women who have experienced homelessness and housing insecurity in Southern California were more susceptible to …

A Place To Rest My Soul: How A Doctoral Student Of Color Group Utilized A Healing-Centered Space To Navigate Higher Education, Jessica I. Ramirez Jul 2024

A Place To Rest My Soul: How A Doctoral Student Of Color Group Utilized A Healing-Centered Space To Navigate Higher Education, Jessica I. Ramirez

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Students of Color have historically faced explicit and implicit forms of discrimination and oppression in educational settings. Unfortunately, not much has changed over the decades as Students of Color continue to experience white supremacy and other systems of oppression. As Students of Color enter graduate school, there are often fewer Students of Color, making these educational settings isolating and hostile. These experiences often encompass white supremacist policies, practices, and remarks that negatively impact Students of Color. With this in mind and as someone who identifies as a Chicana who was once in a doctoral program, I questioned how doctoral Students …

Thriving Through Time: Resilience And Empowerment For Aging Women In Rural Indonesia, Erna Setijaningrum, Rochyati Wahyuni Triana, Asiyah Kassim

Journal of International Women's Studies

Recent research exploring aging women’s realities in rural areas has revealed how gender norms, ageism, and isolation intertwine, impacting women’s lives, health, and access to services. As disadvantages and exclusion increase with age, women encounter shrinking opportunities, reinforced stereotypes, and marginalization. Especially in remote Indonesian villages, aging women lack access to healthcare, income support, and basic services compared to urban counterparts. Drawing on in-depth, semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions with 35 aging rural women in Blitar Regency, East Java Province, Indonesia, this phenomenological study provides insights into the marginalization and deficient public services these women face, including worsening isolation, …

Journal of International Women's Studies

Efforts for empowering women have been a priority agenda in development because women make crucial contributions to society. One of the significant issues that women are well positioned to address is the stunting or impaired development of children due to poor nutrition. As this issue is a threat for national development in Indonesia, the central government has initiatives to tackle stunting, and one of these is the Sustainable Food Garden, or Pekarangan Pangan Lestari (P2L). The innovative program is designed to prevent stunting by empowering women, which also contributes to the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This research is …

Marginalization And Environmental Risk: Women’S Roles In Making Plastic Woven Bags In Indonesia, Salsabila Damayanti, Siti Mas’Udah, Asia Ashfaq, Sudarso, Herdiyanti, Citra Asmara Indra, Merlia Indah Prastiwi

Journal of International Women's Studies

The plastic woven bag has become a symbolic representation of Indonesian women’s identity since the trend increased in 2021. The plastic woven bag represents femininity and the image of women as a result of socio-cultural construction. The activity of weaving paradoxically puts women in both a central and a marginal role. The weaving industry is characterized by an increasing number of platforms for women to generate income and improve their economic welfare. Nevertheless, women are still faced with patriarchal domination, because the demands of their domestic role limit their ability to move freely in public space. Therefore, their status as …

Decolonizing Queer Epistemology: Boys Love And Cultural Imaginary From The Global Majority, Roland Sintos Coloma Jul 2024

Decolonizing Queer Epistemology: Boys Love And Cultural Imaginary From The Global Majority, Roland Sintos Coloma

Journal of Queer and Trans Studies in Education

This article aims to decolonize queer epistemology in order to challenge the hegemony of white/eurocentric LGBTQ histories, cultures, and representations as the universal and normalized standard of queer and trans life and sociality. Toward this objective, it analyzes whitestream queer epistemology, and notes its limits that do not account for its inclusions and exclusions, especially in relation to race, geography, and methodological (homo)nationalism. It draws attention to the works of queer and trans theorists, researchers, and educators from the global majority, especially the growing scholarship on LGBTQ education outside of the United States, to point out a significant gap in …

This study utilized a qualitative hermeneutic phenomenological research design and examined the effects of Japanese music education methodologies and philosophies through data collection and qualitative interviews conducted with nine students whose music education consisted of these elements. The researcher interviewed two Japanese music educators, two American music educators, two Japanese music students, and three American music students. This study helped to …

A Lifestyle Who Is Christ: An Integrative Model Of Spiritual Formation, Katherine L. Pang Jul 2024

A Lifestyle Who Is Christ: An Integrative Model Of Spiritual Formation, Katherine L. Pang

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The field of spiritual formation is replete with models, ways, and processes, including many that propose the integration of psychology and Christianity and have further examined the psychology of Paul. Yet, none emphasize the impact of neuroscience, our brain function, neurochemistry, and neurobiology integrated with the tools and techniques of psychological science facilitated by the Holy Spirit and scripture-based truths derived primarily from Pauline theology in the Christ-follower for growth in spiritual maturity. A model formulated from Pauline theology, psychology, and neuroscience, as such, is novel within the field of spiritual formation. Therefore, the claim stems from the need for …

Using The Colonizers’ Own Weapons: The Politics Of Equality, Freedom, & Integration In Advocacy Against American Indian Termination, Eliza Kravitz Jul 2024

Using The Colonizers’ Own Weapons: The Politics Of Equality, Freedom, & Integration In Advocacy Against American Indian Termination, Eliza Kravitz

Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal

Beginning in the early 1950s, the United States Congress enacted a program of “termination” of American Indian tribes. By eliminating the special relationship between tribes and the federal government, termination aimed at the full assimilation of American Indians into U.S. society. Government proponents advocated for termination using the language of equal rights, freedom, and integration. Previous scholarship has shown that anti-termination advocates, by contrast, appealed to the internationalist Cold War language of development, self-governance, and global decolonization to resist termination. These same leaders also invoked the civil rights language of termination’s proponents, however. Their arguments illustrated how the federal government …

Diversifying The ‘Hsi Bubble’: Black And Asian Women Faculty At Hispanic-Serving Institutions, Elena M. Venegas, Jacqueline B. Koonce, Lorenza Lancaster, Julissa Bazan, Adriana Garza

Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications

This qualitative case study explored the experiences of seven Black and Asian women faculty at Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs). The unique experience of each woman is shared in this paper. Three themes highlight the interconnectedness of participant experiences. The first theme indicated that these Black and Asian women faculty operated in unsupportive microclimates within their HSIs. Secondly, participants communicated a need for representation within the ‘HSI bubble.’ Finally, our participants felt as though their HSIs needed to exercise greater intentionality in terms of truly serving their student populations. Amongst the implications of this research is a better understanding of the experiences …

Head And Heart — An Ethical Tightrope, Anjuli Muller, Anna Brown Jun 2024

Head And Heart — An Ethical Tightrope, Anjuli Muller, Anna Brown

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Navigating ethical considerations in participatory design is complex and ever-changing. The Co-production Project explores the use of co-production methods (co-discover, co-plan, co-design, co-deliver, co-evaluate) via a case study of women’s health in Aotearoa New Zealand. Based in an Arts and Design University, ‘academic ethics’ influence the project in tangible ways that are often procedural and prescriptive, with a focus on productivity. However, co-production methods — underpinned by principles of power-sharing and prioritisation of relationships — call for softer and less tangible considerations aligned with an ethics of care. These tangible and intangible ethical considerations are frequently in tension with each …

Design For Social Prescribing: Bridging Silos For Health Promotion, André Nogueira, Reena Shukla, Mo Sook Park Jun 2024

Design For Social Prescribing: Bridging Silos For Health Promotion, André Nogueira, Reena Shukla, Mo Sook Park

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Social prescribing (SP) refers patients to community and social services that sup-port the individual’s social needs and that can bolster their overall health and well-being. SP offers a promising approach to addressing wide-spread mental health issues, social determinants of health, and growing social isolation. While SP is integrated into the national health systems of countries such as the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and Japan, it has only recently begun to take root in the United States (US). This paper presents “Design for Social Prescribing”, a re-search project led by the Design Laboratory at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public …

Engaging The Public In Technological Futures: A Participatory Speculative Design Approach To Polyphonic Representational Spaces, Nuri Kwon, David Perez, Naomi Jacobs, Mariana Cavada, Rachel Cooper, Jose Maron

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper explores the concept of polyphonic representational space as technological imaginaries of multiple individuals regarding public space. The context of this research relates to implementing digital technologies, such as the Internet of Things and AI, in the public realm and their impact and challenges on policymaking, everyday practices and spatial experiences. Speculative design offers a way of creating multiple scenarios for the future and provoking conversations regarding technological futures. This research adopts a participatory speculative design (PSD) approach to engage with people, not necessarily designers or technology experts, in the future prototyping process. We introduce a study conducted in …

Asset Based Architectural Design With A Systemic Perspective In Vulnerable Community- Participatory Action Research In Iraq Bersive 2 Refugee Camp, Hei Chan, Peter Hasdell

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Vulnerable communities often lack of basic housing and facilities. However, with more understanding, they not only face housing problem but also with social, economic, environmental, political issues and so on. Traditional building approach often focuses on material needs while the underlying causes could be neglected. In fact, vulnerability is often more in the intangibles: relationships with self, others and environment. With this regard, how could designers develop efficient systemic design strategies responding to the complexity of social systems and empower vulnerable groups to recognize themselves as interrelated actors in community development? Asset based design approach under the community capital framework …

Community Empowerment And Identity Assimilation: Social Innovation Design Practice Through Food Resources, Yuxin Wen, Peng Ji, Yuhang Jiang, Qiwen Chen, Han Meng

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Food possesses inherent cultural attributes and serves as a natural medium of connection. This paper introduces a design project for social innovation using food resources: "From Tree to Table" (FTTT). The project is the product of a social innovation course at an art school and lasted for three months. The focus of the project is on the relationship between soft food sovereignty and community transformative change. The Peach Lake Community (PLC) is rich in ecological resources, and a government-level change resulted in differentiation within the community between indigenous residents and recent migrants. FTTT explores the possibility of using the seasonal …

Designing A Recovery Playbook For Muslim Americans Experiencing Substance Use Disorders, Firaz Peer, Shamin Shoomali

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Substance use disorders (SUDs) within the Muslim American community presents unique challenges influenced by cultural, religious, and social factors. Research indicates that SUDs are often hidden within Muslim communities due to the stigma surrounding them. Addressing SUDs requires culturally sensitive prevention and treatment programs that consider the diverse backgrounds and specific needs of Muslim Americans. The goal with this Lab was to create a recovery playbook that can guide Muslim communities in their journey through recovery. This playbook was based on the feedback we received from two online workshops with seven participants from across the US. Doing a thematic analysis …
