A Note On Jewish Women's Studies In The United States, S. F.
A Note On Jewish Women's Studies In The United States, S. F.
Women's Studies Quarterly
As Israeli feminists attempt to connect with the women's movement outside Israel, Jewish feminists in the United States are attempting to connect with them and with the Jewish heritage both groups share. Due to the peculiarities inherent in that heritage, "Jewish Women's Studies" in the United States is as much in its infancy as feminist publishing in Israel. This past year, however, at the First Annual NWSA Convention, a session on Jewish Women's Studies: Theory and Practice took place, as well as a roundtable discussion on Feminism and Judaism, and a spontaneously organized Shabbat service that was inspiring for those …
Caspar Schwenckfeld’S Commentary On The Augsburg Confession: A Translation And Critical Introduction, Fred A. Grater
Caspar Schwenckfeld’S Commentary On The Augsburg Confession: A Translation And Critical Introduction, Fred A. Grater
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The purpose of this thesis is to present a scholarly English translation, with appropriate background matter and historico-theological material, of Caspar von Schwenckfeld’s Commentary on the Augsburg Confession, written sometime during or after Autumn, 1531. There is a brief biographical chapter, as well as short chapters on Schwenckfeld’s relationship with Luther and Melanchthon, and a synopsis of Schwenckfeld’s theology, with special emphasis on themes presented in this Commentary (religious liberty, concept of the Church). The text of Document 103 of the Corpus Schwenckfeldianorum (Vol. III, pp. 862-940, No. 58 in the so-called “P” Epistolar) is translated with notes and …
An Examination Of Personal Salvation In The Theology Of North American Evangelicalism: On The Road To A Theology Of Social Justice, Robert F.J. Gmeindl
An Examination Of Personal Salvation In The Theology Of North American Evangelicalism: On The Road To A Theology Of Social Justice, Robert F.J. Gmeindl
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The question under consideration is the effect of the belief in personal salvation on the theology of North American Evangelicalism, for the purpose of developing a theology of social justice.
This study is a preliminary investigation of the history of Evangelical individualism and the potential influence that individualism might have on Evangelical theology. Certain trends toward isolation and separation, as well as a tendency to neglect what I have called systemic evil, are examined to see how they may result from the Evangelical stress on individualism. Also presented in a skeletal outline of Marcuse’s analysis of one-dimensional society in order …

Few ecumenical issues bear such a burden of history and emotion, but on it rests the preservation of the authentic teaching of Christ to the Apostles. Differences remain, but the areas of agreement are extensive.

The Pragmatic Evolution Of America & The Role Of The Intellectual, Michael Draper
The Pragmatic Evolution Of America & The Role Of The Intellectual, Michael Draper
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The intent of this thesis is to examine a portion of the thought and historical events which contributed to the development of the United States as a pragmatic nation, and the resulting influence upon its intellectual attitudes. The pragmatic evolution of America is a logical consequence, given the backgrounds and circumstances of those people who first settled this land. The founders of this country were, for the most part, members of the poor, working class who had grown up under governments adhering to strict caste societies and religious domination by their rulers. They held a common belief in a work …

Report From The February 4/1/1979 Coordinating Council Meeting, Elizabeth Baer
Report From The February 4/1/1979 Coordinating Council Meeting, Elizabeth Baer
Women's Studies Quarterly
As regional and caucus representatives gathered for the opening session of the semiannual NWSA Coordinating Council meeting on the College Park campus of the University of Maryland on February 15, they were asked to respond to two questions in introducing themselves: "What is your vision of the future of NWSA?" and "Have you and/or your program paid your 1979 dues?" Juxtaposed, the questions reflected the experience of the organization in its first two years—encompassing the idealism of NWSA's founding and the pragmatic exigencies of supporting national organization. The questions, asked and answered on Susan B. Anthony's birthday, began a meeting …

Through the profession of faith of Lutheran churches, the Reformers hoped to create unity among Christians. After their own reforms of Vatican II, Catholics should calmly and prayerfully reexamine the document.
The Immortality Of The Soul Versus The Resurrection Of The Dead, John Sattler
The Immortality Of The Soul Versus The Resurrection Of The Dead, John Sattler
Master of Divinity Thesis
When preparing a presentation on 'death' for a confirmation class, I could find only weak Scriptural proof texts supporting the "traditional" view of death as "separation of body and soul:" Only a few passages spoke of the two nature sin man; namely, body and soul. None spoke in terms of an immortality in man or mentioned a "separation."
The evidence to be cited below will attempt to reveal the problems that are associated with this widely accepted concept of the fate of a Christian at death as it relates to the issue of the immortality of the soul. Several misconceptions …

The Vanguard
A national assembly to address women's concern and an inter-Lutheran commission on women will have to wait-or perhaps remain just a fond dream.
hat's because of action taken at the regular fall meeting of the church body presidents and top executives who govern the Lutheran Council in USA. The meeting indicated that a proposal from the standing committee of the Council's Division for Mission and ministry (DMM) represented "new work" that could not be pursued unless requested by the four church bodies in the Council.

The Rationality Of Plato’S Theory Of Good And Evil, Allan A. Davis
The Rationality Of Plato’S Theory Of Good And Evil, Allan A. Davis
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Plato has been called the “father of rational theology.” This thesis is an attempt to examine in the light of contemporary Platonic scholarship five of Plato’s essentially religious doctrines insofar as they support the idea that Plato’s theory of good and evil is rational. Chapters 1 and 2 examine the plausibility of Plato’s theory of knowledge. Chapter 3 states briefly his theory of Forms, while Chapter 4 attempts to give this doctrine credence by analysing those aspects of it which seem least convincing. Chapters 5 and 6 consider Plato’s theory of soul and conclude that, although some of his beliefs …

The Comparative Stratigraphy Of Palaeolithic Palestine With Special Emphasis On The Flint Implements, Kenneth Edwin Guenter
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Since World War I the Palaeolithic industries of Palestine have been the subject of a considerable amount of investigation and discussion. The results of this work have been made available to scholars of the Ancient Near East primarily in isolated journal articles or publications of single sites. The present writer intends, therefore, to present an account of those Palaeolithic industries in which this data is collected, systematized and interpreted in such a way that scholars working in this area of Near Eastern studies may have at their disposal a foundation which is readily meaningful and broadly factual.
This foundation is …

The Influence Of The “Memorandum” Of The Most Rev. Philip Carrington, Archbishop Of Quebec, In Revising The Liturgy Of The Book Of Common Prayer 1959 Canada, William R. Blott
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
In 1943 the Anglican Church of Canada began to revise its Prayer Book. The central matter, the real reason for the undertaking, was the revision of the Eucharist. In 1952 the revised Eucharistic Rite was presented to the Church, and comments solicited. A year later, in a memorandum sent to all members, The Most Rev. Philip Carrington, Archbishop of the Ecclesiastical Province of Canada and Bishop of the Diocese of Quebec, a prominent member of the General Committee on Revision of the Book of Common Prayer, wrote that the revised Rite had been “very successful in creating public interest and …
