The Effects Of War As A Basis To Consider Six Novels By Ernest Hemingway And F. Scott Fitzgerald, Nancy Weston Noel Jan 1986

The Effects Of War As A Basis To Consider Six Novels By Ernest Hemingway And F. Scott Fitzgerald, Nancy Weston Noel

Theses and Dissertations

Curiously, the issue of war has never been considered a solid basis for examining the works of Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Yet one common thread running through the body of their work is war. A study of the authors’ attitudes toward war and their characters’ responses to war in Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms (1929), For Whom the Bell Tolls (1940), The Sun Also Rises (1926), and Fitzgerald’s This Side of Paradise (1920), The Great Gatsby (1925), and Tender Is the Night (1934), yields several conclusions. Hemingway’s and Fitzgerald’s works reveal two different types of human responses to …

Old Testament And Related Studies, Hugh Nibley Jan 1986

Old Testament And Related Studies, Hugh Nibley

Maxwell Institute Publications

In December 1832, the Lord instructed the Prophet Joseph Smith, “Seek ye diligently and teach one another words of wisdom; yea, seek ye out the best books words of wisdom; seek learning, even by study and also by faith.”

Few members of the Church have followed that admonition as faithfully as has Hugh Nibley, emeritus professor of ancient history at Brigham Young University. As a young man he memorized vast portions of Shakespeare and studied Old English, Latin, Greek and other languages. As a student at Berkeley, in he began reading the southwest corner of the ninth level of the …

The Public Speaking Of John Taylor: Champion Of Liberty, Larry D. Anderson Jan 1986

The Public Speaking Of John Taylor: Champion Of Liberty, Larry D. Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

The speaking of John Taylor influenced the lives of Latter-day Saints for five decades. He delivered between two and three thousand addresses. In those addresses he promulgated a diversity of principles concerning the kingdom of God. This study focused on Taylor's ideas regarding liberty. Those ideas were often found in Taylor's speaking between 1857 and 1867. It was a time of threatened liberties for the people he lead. His speeches during those years played a significant part in swaying politcal and military efforts, as well as bolstering Mormon determination.

This study found that Taylor's ideas of liberty are based largely …

This presentaton is an updating of Mitannian Studies, utilizing material from all available sources, discipline and other relevant countries. The Scarboro Foreign Mission Society, 1955-1968: The Implications Of The Social Dimensions Of Faith For A Missionary Endeavour, Erin Frances Phillips Jan 1986

The Scarboro Foreign Mission Society, 1955-1968: The Implications Of The Social Dimensions Of Faith For A Missionary Endeavour, Erin Frances Phillips

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

During the late fifties the Scarboro Foreign Mission Society worked in missions in Latin America, the British Caribbean, and Asia. Their work was primarily parish work. They gave religious instruction, administered the sacraments, and cared for the pastoral needs of their parishoners. In countries with sizeable non-Catholic populations they tried various means to attract people to the Church. In countries with Catholic majorities they experimented with a variety of methods for providing the sacraments and instruction to large numbers of people. Occasionally they became involved in running co-operatives; the reasons they gave for this work emphasized its spiritual benefits.

During …

The Concept Of The Poor In The Context Of The Ecclesiology Of Liberation Theology, Amin Americo Rodor Jan 1986

The Concept Of The Poor In The Context Of The Ecclesiology Of Liberation Theology, Amin Americo Rodor

Dissertations

This investigation deals with the concept of the poor in the thought of Latin American Liberation theology, particularly as articulated in the context of the movement's ecclesiology.

Chapter I traces the historical and theological context for the emergence of liberation theology. The focus is placed first on the ecclesiological models through which the Roman Catholic Church expressed its life and mission in Latin America and how it affected the Church's social relations in the area. The impact of the ecclesiological shift of Vatican Council II, in combination with the historical situation of Latin America in the late '60s, is seen …

Slow To Understand: The Disciples In Synoptic Perspective, Bertram L. Melbourne Jan 1986

Slow To Understand: The Disciples In Synoptic Perspective, Bertram L. Melbourne

Dissertations

The problem of the portrayal of the disciples of Jesus has been the focus of much scholarly investigation. Discussion has been pursued primarily from the Marcan perspective, in keeping with its assumed priority. Consequently, Mark is seen as creating the disciples' incomprehension to serve his theological intent. The correctness of this notion is questioned in this study which seeks to determine whether incomprehension was an authentic experience of Jesus' original disciples, and whether slowness of understanding was to be expected in teaching and learning contexts.

Recent scholarship on the disciples is surveyed to identify the main issues, approaches, trends, and …

Religious Sanctuaries In Ancient Cyprus During The Iron Age, Lenia Chamberlain Jan 1986

Religious Sanctuaries In Ancient Cyprus During The Iron Age, Lenia Chamberlain

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The end the Late Bronze (or Cypriote) period in Cyprus occurred shortly after 1100 BC, when an earthquake caused widespread destruction on the island. This coincided with the arrival of the last wave of refugees from Mycenaean Greece, who took advantage of the destruction of the Late Cypriote cities to establish their own colonies; this colonization is relfected in the foundation legends of most of the Iron Age cities.

The Iron Age in Cyprus lasted from about 1050 BC to about 475 BC, and is divided into two major periods, the Cypro-Geometric period (1050-750 BC), and the Cypro-Archaic period (750-475 …

Anglican And Reformed: Ecumenism And Confessionalism In The Perspective Of The Reformation, Timothy Ronald Cooke Jan 1986

Anglican And Reformed: Ecumenism And Confessionalism In The Perspective Of The Reformation, Timothy Ronald Cooke

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The reign of Edward VI witnessed an unparalleled receptivity to foreign theological ideas on the part of the Church of England. In this very short space of time, 1547-1553, the reforming policies initiated under Henry VIII were consolidated and pushed much further. The classical documents of Anglicanism, the Book of Common Prayer and the Articles of Religion, were formulated in this period. The Reformed theologians of the continent and those in English exile played an influential role in the shaping of these classical documents and in the policies which lead to their creation. The continental theologians in Edwardian England thus …

“The Greatest Human Travail”: Faith And The Context Of Rhetoric In Zora Neale Hurston’S Dust Tracks On A Road, James Cameron Hall Jan 1986

“The Greatest Human Travail”: Faith And The Context Of Rhetoric In Zora Neale Hurston’S Dust Tracks On A Road, James Cameron Hall

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Zora Neale Hurston was a controversial in the Harlem Renaissance. Her little studied autobiography could be helpful in resolving many of the unanswered questions. However, critical responses have mostly been negative. Critics have questions her portrayal of social reality, particularly black/white relations. If the autobiography is examined in terms of the internal dynamics of the Harlem Renaissance and the political situation of blacks during the Second World War, with special attention paid to the development of Hurston’s religious faith, a different interpretation is possible.

This thesis examines Dust Tracks on a Road as Hurston’s apologia, an autobiographical defense of faith. …

The Samaria Region During The Israelite Period: An Urban Study, Olaf Johannes Bogh Poulsen Jan 1986

The Samaria Region During The Israelite Period: An Urban Study, Olaf Johannes Bogh Poulsen

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

From the Biblical accounts relating the activities of prophets such as Elijah, Elisha, Amos and Hosea, it has long been known that the period after the death of Solomon (ca. 922 B.C.) was one of the great political, social, economic and ideational upheaval in Palestine. This situation was especially true within the Northern Kingdom of Israel. In conjunction with an following the accession of the Omride dynasty (ca. 876-842/841 B.C.), a number of phenomena occurred which caused a profound transformation of the situation that existed there. The first of these involved the consolidation of the royal power base so that …
