Creating Ethnicity In The Hydraulic Village Of The Mormon West, Charles M. Hatch May 1991

Creating Ethnicity In The Hydraulic Village Of The Mormon West, Charles M. Hatch

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study has looked behind the mask of nineteenth-century theocracy to see Mormons in the Great Basin creating a democratic society of regionally concentrated kin groups where obligations and rewards for individuals were increasingly determined by age and life cycle position. As generations of young adults acted together in self-interest dispersing their villages on receding frontiers, they forged a balance between competition and cooperation which merged the immediate need of individuals to establish and support families with the collective memory of their Mormon past. In so doing, they created an identity for themselves which was unique in the arid West. …

An Appraisal Of The Leap Of Faith, Gary R. Habermas

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

Where has the leap of faith concept come from? What has it fostered? Does it provide an adequate foundation for the Christian faith? This article will critique the development of the leap of faith through Lessing, Kant and Kierkegaard. It will then evaluate the theological and philosophical positions that have grown from it and its present status in light of the Scriptures.

Influence Of Feminist Scholarship On My Theological Work, Vincent L. Wimbush Jan 1991

Influence Of Feminist Scholarship On My Theological Work, Vincent L. Wimbush

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

It is an honor for me to have been asked to be a part of this roundtable
discussion. I join Francis Fiorenza in recognizing the enormous (that is,
radical, disturbing) contributions that feminist scholarship (in all of its variety)
has made to religious studies. I take special delight in having the
opportunity to reflect upon the influence of feminist scholarship upon biblical
studies and upon my own scholarly development and work.

Otto Rank's Theory Of Cultural Transition, Thomas James Clearwater Jan 1991

Otto Rank's Theory Of Cultural Transition, Thomas James Clearwater

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The thesis has two purposes. The first is to provide a biographical and theoretical introduction to Otto Rank. The second is to discuss a specific theme in Rank’s writings, namely his understanding of culture and cultural transition, with specific reference to what he deemed the transition from religion to psychology. The study begins with a short biography. It then proceeds to detail aspects of Rank’s theories that are important for an understanding of his theory of cultural transition. A conclusion offers speculations concerning the relevance of Rank’s theories for modern scholarship. The investigation of culture is a particularly complex and …

Funeral Rites Among Ashanti Immigrants In Toronto: A Case Study (Ontario), Paul Adjin-Tettey Jan 1991

Funeral Rites Among Ashanti Immigrants In Toronto: A Case Study (Ontario), Paul Adjin-Tettey

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The Ashantis are well known for their strict observance and co-operation during funeral rites. I attempt to answer the following questions: To what extent do the Ashantis who have migrated to Canada still hold on to indigenous concepts and funeral practices? By virtue of their being in two worlds what difficulties come their way if they try to follow indigenous practice to its letter? What innovations have been introduced into their funeral rites? Can a symbol or procedure be radically altered and yet perceived as the same? In a foreign context does ritual retain its unifying function? The method for …

Jerome's Commentary On Jonah: Translation With Introduction And Critical Notes, Timothy Michael Hegedus Jan 1991

Jerome's Commentary On Jonah: Translation With Introduction And Critical Notes, Timothy Michael Hegedus

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis presents the exegetical practice of the Biblical scholar Eusebius Hieronymus, better known as Jerome (c. 331-420), as exhibited in his commentary on the book of Jonah. Through a translation of this work for English-language readers and an introductory chapter, the thesis offers a case study of Jerome’s hermeneutical approach as it may be observed in his interpretation of a specific Biblical text. Jerome composed his Commentary on Jonah at a critical point in his career as a Biblical scholar and interpreter. It was the first Biblical commentary Jerome wrote after he professed to have repudiated his allegiance to …

The Impact Of Archbishop Oscar Romero's Alliance With The Struggle For Liberation Of The Salvadoran People: A Discussion Of Church-State Relations (El Salvador), Helen-May Eaton Jan 1991

The Impact Of Archbishop Oscar Romero's Alliance With The Struggle For Liberation Of The Salvadoran People: A Discussion Of Church-State Relations (El Salvador), Helen-May Eaton

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Archbishop Oscar Romero symbolizes, for many Salvadorans more than a decade after his death, the spirit of a struggle to liberate the poor and powerless from the repression of the privileged few who wield social, economic and political power in El Salvador.

As archbishop, Romero shifted the church’s emphasis from one of church-state complicity to a church intent on defending its poor. Traditionally, the church had been aligned with the aims and methods of the ruling families of El Salvador. Romero found this alliance unacceptable in light of the socio-political reality that found the majority of Salvadorans being forced to …
