Carceral Afterlives : Prisons, Detention, And Punishment In Postcolonial Uganda, Katherine Bruce-Lockhart
Carceral Afterlives : Prisons, Detention, And Punishment In Postcolonial Uganda, Katherine Bruce-Lockhart
Ohio University Press Open Access Books
Drawing upon social history, political history, and critical prison studies, this book analyzes how prisons and other instruments of colonial punishment endured after independence and challenges their continued existence.
In Carceral Afterlives, Katherine Bruce-Lockhart traces the politics, practices, and lived experiences of incarceration in postcolonial Uganda, focusing on the period between independence in 1962 and the beginning of Yoweri Museveni’s presidency in 1986. During these decades, Ugandans experienced multiple changes of government, widespread state violence, and war, all of which affected the government’s approach to punishment. Bruce-Lockhart analyzes the relationship between the prison system and other sites of confinement—including informal …

Oklahoma V. Castro-Huerta, United States Supreme Court, Brett Kavanaugh
US Government Documents Related to Indigenous Nations
This United States (US) Supreme Court decision, argued April 27, 2022 and decided June 29, 2022 expanded the reach of state jurisdiction to allow for prosecution of crimes that occur on Indigenous land, regardless of whether or not a state is named as having such jurisdiction under US Public Law 280. In 2020, the US Supreme Court's decision on McGirt v. Oklahoma established that much of the eastern part of the state of Oklahoma is Indigenous land and therefore falls under either tribal jurisdiction or Federal jurisdiction. In 2015 Victor Manuel Castro-Huerta was charged and convicted of child neglect by …

Ethics Through Design, Maria Alejandra Luján Escalante, Luke Moffat, Monika Büscher
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Ethics through Design (EtD) uses co-design methods to create, facilitate and nurture anticipatory capabilities for research and innovation, responsive to both society and environment. In practice, EtD problematizes both Ethics and Design. This paper draws upon ethics of technology, specifically the work of Gilbert Simondon, to formulate principles of co-design facilitation. EtD understands ethics, beyond regulation and administrative ticking-box exercises, as contextual, creative and participatory ongoing processes. EtD has been developed within Disaster and Risk Management (DRM) and Emergency Response domains, over 7 years of working in partnership with emergency response practitioners, policymakers, academics across disciplines, standardization organizations and key …
Designing Inside And Alongside The System: Working With Residents Of Ferguson, Missouri On Police Reform, Alix Gerber
Designing Inside And Alongside The System: Working With Residents Of Ferguson, Missouri On Police Reform, Alix Gerber
DRS Biennial Conference Series
After uprisings exposed the racial bias of policing in Ferguson, Missouri in 2014, the U.S. Department of Justice committed the city to a process of court-ordered reform. This paper outlines a creative exploration of two design approaches to impacting policymaking and legal reform in this context: a Participant Designer approach that sought to include more people’s lived experience and perspectives in policymaking, and a Speculative approach that worked to reframe the discussion from a problem about policing to an opportunity to imagine new forms of public safety. These approaches explored ways of working inside and alongside the legal system, on …
The Junk Playground As Agora: Designing Spaces To Re-Invigorate Democratic Participation, Mathias Poulsen
The Junk Playground As Agora: Designing Spaces To Re-Invigorate Democratic Participation, Mathias Poulsen
DRS Biennial Conference Series
In this paper, I suggest that there is an urgent need to design new spaces and possibilities for democratic participation. With inspiration from the tradition of “adventure playgrounds”, I argue that play design can contribute to expanding the participatory repertoire within deliberative democracy. Two design experi-ments are presented and discussed through the prism of self-determination the-ory and the findings point to a new understanding of democratic participation and the intrinsic, civic motivation that drives it. By shifting focus from the classi-cal deliberative ideals of rational discourse towards sensorial, open-ended explo-ration and creation, new democratic possibilities emerge. It is argued that …

Exposure to electromagnetic fields is a major public concern due to the possible hazardous effects on health caused by exposure to these radiations. The aims of this study were to measure radiofrequency radiation levels from different wireless systems and to compare the results with the recommended limits by the World Health Organization (WHO) which should be less that 450 μw/cm2. The study was a cross-sectional study that was conducted in different cities and villages from the northern governorates in the West Bank; Jenin, Tulkarm, Nablus, Qalqilya, Tubas and Sal fit. To measure the radiation levels ranging from 80 MHz to …

Breaking | Grounding | Growing: Expanding The Rhode Island Gardening Reentry Programs As A Pathway Towards Stability, Juliana Soltys
Masters Theses
What happens to the over two million people incarcerated in U.S. prisons and jails?
Changing in sentencing laws and policies have created a cycle of imprisonment, racially isolating and oppressing BIPOC communities. Reintegration and reentry programs are an avenue to break the cycle of recidivism. Through my work, I have developed hands-on, structured opportunities for justice-involved adults to rebuild a life for themselves by increasing the accessibility of gardening reentry programs. This project creates a space for mentorship and support for Rhode Island’s formerly incarcerated people with the goal of helping them to develop vital life skills through growing and …

The Cop In Your Head: Criminal Justice Education, Liberalism, And The Carceral State, Nicole Haiber
The Cop In Your Head: Criminal Justice Education, Liberalism, And The Carceral State, Nicole Haiber
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis centers policing ideology in higher education and the way it is constructed and fortified through criminal justice programs. In 1968, the Law Enforcement Education Program (LEEP) made funds available to police officers to attend college and awarded grants to universities to create criminal justice programs. The program effectively funneled federal money into the project of professionalizing the police and developed criminal justice as a field devoted to conducting crime research, as defined by the federal government. Criminal justice programs exploded across the country with the availability of LEEP funding, and the City University of New York’s (CUNY) John …

The White House: No Drugs Allowed, Olivia A. Jones
Communication Studies
The War on Drugs is a long-term metaphorical war designed to reduce illegal drug distribution, trade, and use by maintaining significant punishment for drug dealers and users. This paper serves to examine how U.S. presidents throughout history have impacted this drug war through their targeted rhetoric and ensuing policies. I examine the research question, “How have presidents used their rhetorical power to perpetuate the War on Drugs while pushing a tough-on-crime narrative that portrays certain drug users and minorities as deviants responsible for crime?” Historical contexts, primary sources, and existing research are used to examine the issue. Using Ideographic Criticism, …

Mahalaya: Building Community In The Filipinx Diaspora Through Solidarity Journalism, Casey Ticsay
Master's Theses
Unethical approaches to storytelling in professional journalism continue to shape public discourse around the diverse experiences of Asians and Asian Americans. This paper analyzes the origins and impact of ethnic news media, specifically the rise of Filipino and Filipino American press in the United States, and the ways journalists of color continue to challenge traditional practices of professional journalism that perpetuate anti-Blackness and maintain white supremacy. Filipino and Filipino American newspapers in the early twentieth century provide historical insight into the issues, debates, and conversations transpiring at the time and highlight the community’s ongoing response to the misrepresentations of their …

Forgotten Immigrant Voices: West Indian Immigrant Experiences And Attitudes Towards Contemporary Immigration, Danielle Cross
Forgotten Immigrant Voices: West Indian Immigrant Experiences And Attitudes Towards Contemporary Immigration, Danielle Cross
Honors Scholar Theses
Scholarly work and media coverage both point to the negative effect that the rhetoric and policy of former US President Donald Trump had on the lived experience and wellbeing of immigrant groups explicitly targeted by it (i.e., the “Trump effect”). Typically, the focus has been on Muslim and Latino immigrants as well as those less-explicitly targeted but still affected by Trump-era policies, such as temporary workers. This thesis explores whether Black immigrants from the English-speaking Caribbean, a group notably missing from the literature of “Trump effects” on immigrant experiences, experienced similar attitudinal or practical effects as a result of contemporary …
The Rise Of Neo-Fascist Populism And Islamophobia In The West, Mohamed Tawfiq Said Tabib
The Rise Of Neo-Fascist Populism And Islamophobia In The West, Mohamed Tawfiq Said Tabib
Dissertations and Theses
Trumpism can be defined as racist right-wing neo-fascist populism and nativism combined with a cult of personality. There is very little distinction between neo-fascists, the alt-right, and far-right groups. All can be identified by their socio-political philosophy and vehement beliefs of racial supremacy, ultranationalism, populism, xenophobia, nativism, and anti-immigrant sentiment, as well as being opposed to liberal Western democracy and its values. This thesis explores why there has been a popular international resurgence of far-right neo-fascist movements throughout the European Union and the United States and examines the impact on inter-group social and political relations with those of different racial …

The Sanctuary Campus: Establishing Safe Spaces Of Higher Education For Undocumented And Daca-Status Students, Lizbet Martinez-Port
CSB and SJU Distinguished Thesis
The election of President Donald Trump in 2016 brought fear to undocumented and DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) status students on campuses across the United States. In his campaign, Trump detailed his desire to get rid of the Consideration of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. Various institutions of higher education created resources, put in place sanctuary policies, and even declared themselves as sanctuary campuses to fight against the challenges that hindered undocumented and DACA students from achieving a higher education. This paper focuses on the policies at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University, two private Catholic …

Looking At Latino Communities: Legal Cynicism, Acculturation, And Their Willingness To Cooperate With Police, Shayla Salais
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Numerous studies have examined how acculturation affects Latino neighborhoods and how legal cynicism affects Latino neighborhoods. Acculturation has been linked with low crime levels, meanwhile legal cynicism is attributed to high crime levels. This study aims to address this contradiction in the literature. Based on 1059 surveys, 46 neighborhood clusters were used to examine how legal cynicism and acculturation to Mexico impact a neighborhoods willingness to cooperate with police. A multivariate ordinary least squares (OLS) regression found that acculturation to Mexico results in higher levels of legal cynicism and less willingness to cooperate with police. The OLS regression also found …
Walking Back The System Trope: Reimagining Incarceration And The State Through A Spatial Theory Approach, Cody Hunter
Walking Back The System Trope: Reimagining Incarceration And The State Through A Spatial Theory Approach, Cody Hunter
All Dissertations
This dissertation critiques the systems theory approach to incarceration policy, practice, and research and proposes a rhetorically informed spatial theory approach as an alternative. Offering a non-hierarchical complexity theory as a bridge between systems and space, I then integrate rhetorical listening as a strategy for navigating and operationalizing our proposed spatial theory approach. I then apply our proposed methodology to archival research, focusing on the South Carolina Penitentiary as a case study, and offer two heuretic experiments to explore the range of this methodology for archival research. I also explore potential applications of this rhetorically informed spatial theory approach in …

Exploring The Workplace Climate At Police Agencies During Civil Unrest And The Factors Influencing Officers' Participation In Black Lives Matter Protesting, Joshua R. Ruffin
Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations
Scholars have long documented the negative relationship between police and communities of color. While these findings are of great importance, research remains limited on how connected police officers are to social justice movements (e.g., Black Lives Matter, or BLM for short) and the purposes behind why they exist. Furthermore, many studies focusing on police officer experiences tend to examine officer experiences with protesters, with limited studies focusing on their experiences with other officers during civil unrest and on the factors that influence their participation in protest movements when off duty. To help fill this gap, this study utilized semi-structured interviews …
The Rise And Fall Of The Original Lone Star State: Infant American Imperialism Ascendant In West Florida, Cody Scallions
The Rise And Fall Of The Original Lone Star State: Infant American Imperialism Ascendant In West Florida, Cody Scallions
Florida Historical Quarterly
To many scholars, the West Florida Revolt of 1810 served merely as a transitional period in American history. Referenced as a time when a few social elites rose to challenge Spanish colonial authority in southeastern Louisiana, the West Florida Revolt has been viewed as a necessary step in the annexation of the territory by the United States. Recent research suggests this perspective should be qualified. Much like the Republic of Texas, the Republic of West Florida exhibited characteristics common to more successful independent states, including a functioning written constitution, a judicial system, a treasury, an army, and important elements of …

In March 1933 the Miami, Florida, police department considered that it had achieved a major coup with the arrest of 38-year-old jewel thief Harry Sitamore at his rented Miami Beach bungalow where he lived with his wife Mildred, 5-year-old son, and several other relatives. The dawn raid on the bungalow was a joint. New York-Miami operation involving two New York City police detectives, four Miami detectives, uniformed offices, and representatives of the Noel Scaffa and Pinkerton Detective Agencies. At 4 a.m. they rapped on the door and were greeted by Sitamore's wife and son who attempted to prevent their entry. …

Understanding Barriers To Sexual Assault Reporting Among Undergraduate Sorority Women, Isabella Rivera
Journal of Vincentian Social Action
This study aimed to examine the correlation between knowledge of sexual health and sexual assault, and the subsequent disclosure of sexual assault amongst undergraduate women in sororities at St. John’s University. During the academic year (2019-2020), the number of reported sexual assaults on campus was discrepant among the perception of the student body, with students believing there to be a higher number of incidents than reported to the University. Possible causes of the lack of formal sexual assault reporting were investigated. This included the knowledge of undergraduate women at St. John’s University pertaining to sexual health, reproductive health, university resources, …
