James Michael Curley Scrapbooks

The James Michael Curley Scrapbook Collection consists of digitized microfilmed copies of notebooks kept by Curley from 1914-1937. These notebooks contain news clippings that were drawn primarily from Boston newspapers. Curley was born in Roxbury, MA in 1874. He served four terms as Mayor of Boston: 1914–1918, 1922–1926, 1930–1934 and 1946–1950. He also served as Governor of Massachusetts from 1935-1937. Safety Education In The Elementary School, Julia Alice Sheehan

Bachelors’ Theses

In modern civilization we find numerous and varied hazards, without a sufficient knowledge to combat the startling increase of accidents caused by these hazards. In the United States six per cent to the deaths are due to carelessness. The number of American soldiers, who made the supreme sacrifice in Europe during the nineteen months that our country was in the World War, was 77,118. Statistics of the United States Census Bureau show, in the death registration area of the United States during the twelve months of the year 1920, the number of violent deaths, exclusive of suicide, was 68,697. According …

The Histrionic In Dickens, Mary Josephine Markey

Bachelors’ Theses

We shall examine the life and works of Charles Dickens to find if he really was histrionically inclined. Of course it will be impossible in a work of this kind to consider all the author’s works but we shall look for passages, scenes and characters which could lend themselves to the stage.

Colonel Fielding Lewis, Emeline Lee Stearns May 1924

Colonel Fielding Lewis, Emeline Lee Stearns

Honors Theses

There is a two-fold reason for the assertion that to the student of American History, and especially of those chapters dealing with the Old Dominion, a study of the life of Fielding Lewis should prove one of value and intense interest. First, there is the contribution which this colonial patriot made to the Revolutionary cause. To too great an extent we associate heroism in a time of strife with courage on the battlefield. The life of Fielding Lewis is a story of courage on the side lines, a courage none the less true because it lacks military glory as a …

Report Of South Dakota State Council Of Defense: 1917-1919, South Dakota State Council Of Defense

Rare Books, Manuscripts,Government Documents, and Atlases

As written history of the wars of the world cannot make mention of the countless heroes, who, unknown to the general public, gave their all, even life itself, so unrecorded are the names of the majority citizenship of this and other states which gave loyal service, both at home and abroad, in the great war just ended. No detailed account can be given in this report of any of the many campaigns successfully carried out under the direction of the 62 County Councils of Defense. These bodies had no legal status other than that conferred by the State Council, and …

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

Notes on Shakespeare's Workmanship. By Sir Arthur QuiIler-Couch, M. A. New York: Henry Holt and Company .

The title of Quiller-Couch's recent volume,l would seem to promise a fresh discussion of the dramaturgic method and excellencies of this author. No promise or prospect could have been more welcome. The technic of organizing a play is a matter of no slight concern. All the dramatic world is waiting for some satisfying if not final word.. There are critics and scholars who affirm that there is no such thing as dramatic construction. They would even add that there are no princiJ>les …
