Maturing Manga: An Analysis Of Adult Themes In Shōnen Manga, Audrey Leahy Apr 2023

Maturing Manga: An Analysis Of Adult Themes In Shōnen Manga, Audrey Leahy

Honors College Theses

Manga is a Japanese form of visual storytelling comparable to comic books and graphic novels that has seen a significant increase in popularity abroad in the twenty-first century. In Japan, manga is published in magazines intended for particular target audiences. The two most prominent of these are shōnen, manga for young men, and seinen, manga for adult men. This paper examines these demographics and explores the growing similarities between these two demographics. The research compares the adult content and themes of manga in both shōnen and seinen manga. The series Dorohedoro and Chainsaw Man were analyzed both quantitatively for amounts …

The Abolitionist Spectator: Resistant Readings Of Punishment, Rehabilitation, And Reform At The Louisiana State Penitentiary, Kathryn Marie Morris Apr 2023

The Abolitionist Spectator: Resistant Readings Of Punishment, Rehabilitation, And Reform At The Louisiana State Penitentiary, Kathryn Marie Morris

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

For the majority of the twenty-first century, Louisiana has been the global leader in rates of incarceration. Despite its prevalence, many people encounter prisons and punishment only through representations in movies, television, and the news, remaining distant from the actual processes of punishment and prisons built in remote areas. The Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola, however, is unique in the number of opportunities it presents for the public to enter the prison for large-scale events like the famous Angola Prison Rodeo, select drama club performances, or to visit the Angola Prison Museum. These opportunities are often read cynically, as moments …

Reckoning With “Corporeal And Mental Disabilities”: The Bureaucracy Of Immigrant Disease Management In Early-To-Mid Nineteenth Century America, Vivek K. Rallabandi Apr 2023

Reckoning With “Corporeal And Mental Disabilities”: The Bureaucracy Of Immigrant Disease Management In Early-To-Mid Nineteenth Century America, Vivek K. Rallabandi

Student Publications

This paper explores how the American bureaucratic apparatus during the early-to-mid nineteenth century dealt with immigrants who carried risks of physical and mental illness. Though previous studies have discretely dealt with physical and mental illnesses that immigrants during this period carried, this paper takes an integrated approach, arguing that these two elements should be viewed in conjunction with one another.

Between Censure And Liberalization: The Press And Publishing In Second Empire France, Oana M. Iancau Apr 2023

Between Censure And Liberalization: The Press And Publishing In Second Empire France, Oana M. Iancau

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

Napoleon III's ambition to construct a paradoxical liberal empire encountered a major obstacle in the realm of the press, which chafed under censure and forced the Emperor to consider the ramifications that absolutism would have for his reign, given France's revolutionary history. The article traces the history of censure under the Second Empire, to identify Napoleon III's motivations for liberalization and its consequences for his regime.

“The Development Of The Conceptive Plot Through Early 19th-Century English Novels”, Jannea R. Thomason Apr 2023

“The Development Of The Conceptive Plot Through Early 19th-Century English Novels”, Jannea R. Thomason

Dissertations (1934 -)

My dissertation, “The Development of the Conceptive Plot through Early 19th Century English Novels,” reads these novels through the history of midwifery and reproduction to show how authors developed a coherent set of narrative features to challenge ideas about women’s agency in reproduction. Building on recent explorations of the maternal and feminist aspects of the novels, I further nuance the representations of women and reproduction in the novels. Nineteenth-century authors explored reproductive rhetoric, law, and medical practices, and their explorations appear as what I call “the conceptive plot”: a set of narrative features illustrating how different systems strip women of …

Accidents Mar 2023

Accidents

Appalachia

Reports of rescues and accidents in New Hampshire’s White Mountains during the cold weather and pre-meltout months of late 2021 and winter/spring 2022. The editors describe the role the mind plays in planning and executing hikes. Two incidents of poor planning complicated by medical conditions in the Franconia Ridge area are examined. A hiker slips on the Fishin’ Jimmy Trail. In April, a skier suffers a long fall and multiple injuries in the Great Gulf Wilderness. Cardiac trouble plagues a guest at Carter Notch Hut in March. A hiker falls long and hard while trying to take a photo on …

"The Veneer Of Civilization Washed Off": Anti-Black Posse-Lynchings In The Twentieth-Century Rural Midwest, Brent M. S. Campney Mar 2023

"The Veneer Of Civilization Washed Off": Anti-Black Posse-Lynchings In The Twentieth-Century Rural Midwest, Brent M. S. Campney

History Faculty Publications

This study seeks to identify anti-Black posse-lynchings in the Midwest between 1910 and 1930, and to examine the ways in which they were framed by the media for their readers. It posits that these lynchings emerged as the foremost type of anti-Black lynching by the second decade of the twentieth century, casting doubt thereby on the prevailing scholarly assumption that the number of lynchings declined precipitously in these years. Because most of these incidents received little attention at the time and few received significant attention outside of the locality in which they occurred, this essay uses as its primary documentation …

Data’S Entanglements: Artmaking As Corresponding Companion During Diffractive Analysis, Kelly Clark/Keefe Feb 2023

Data’S Entanglements: Artmaking As Corresponding Companion During Diffractive Analysis, Kelly Clark/Keefe

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

This essay invites readers into two creative correspondences that emerged during the author’s involvement in a participatory arts-based research project called Life Lines. The Life Lines project aimed at engaging a small group of young adults alongside researchers in their use of multimodal arts practices to inquire into what makes young adult identity work work the way that it does. In Life Lines the phenomenon of identity and the approaches to inquiry used to explore it were conceptualized through a material feminist framework that proposes the co-constituting nature of meaning and matter (i.e., bodies, atmospheres, and objects of …

French Military Tactics In The American Civil War: An Analysis Of The Influence Of Antoine Henri Jomini’S Principles In Two Selected Battles And A Campaign, Michele M. Hawes Feb 2023

French Military Tactics In The American Civil War: An Analysis Of The Influence Of Antoine Henri Jomini’S Principles In Two Selected Battles And A Campaign, Michele M. Hawes

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Between 1796 and 1815 the Napoleonic Wars had Europe in a constant state of conflict. Ultimately, a shifting coalition of Europeans defeated the French Emperor, but not before the world was changed forever. The Napoleonic Wars planted the seeds of the unified states of Germany and Italy, the United States doubled in size with the Louisiana Purchase, and perhaps most significantly, the definition of modern warfare became aligned with French military tactics. On the heels of the French Revolution, Napoleon had come remarkably close to conquering Europe through the combination of his leadership, audacity, and mastery of the art of …

How Understanding History Through Historical Fiction Affects Gender Relations, Samantha Eastman Feb 2023

How Understanding History Through Historical Fiction Affects Gender Relations, Samantha Eastman

Honors Projects in English and Cultural Studies

In supporting how understanding history through historical fiction affects gender relations, it is important to look at not only the studied value of historical teaching but also the history itself. The history of women, particularly women of color and other marginalized groups, is often neglected in the Public Education system globally. In higher-level education, educational gaps are not always addressed. Understanding what led to the core values popularly held in society today can simultaneously allow us to reevaluate them. This thesis examines three major periods in US history where women were negatively affected by the standards and beliefs of the …

Building Coleus Academy, Janessa Unseld Jan 2023

Building Coleus Academy, Janessa Unseld

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Coleus Academy, a nonprofit e-learning platform, has been created to address the deficits left by the de-emphasis and, at times, outright omission of practical skill-centric education in American curriculums. There exists a gap between the degree of knowledge necessary to engage with adult life and the extent of that knowledge that is actually possessed by emerging adults. Prominent legislations are among the numerous efforts to address this issue. However, there is a deeply fractured market where resources are proving too expensive, too sparse, or hyper-specific to the point of limited usability. Compounded with disparities in when, where, and to whom …

The Impact Of Gender On Relationship Satisfaction In Law Enforcement, Carole Ann Presson Jan 2023

The Impact Of Gender On Relationship Satisfaction In Law Enforcement, Carole Ann Presson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Relationships have been identified as a critical component of mental wellness. Law enforcement has been recognized as a profession with high divorce rates and relationship failure, contributing to reduced mental health in law enforcement. By addressing and identifying relationship concerns, issues of suicide, use of force, productivity, and reduced tenure can be addressed. This quantitative study aimed to identify areas of stress contributing to relationship dissatisfaction. The study’s initial focus was to identify if gender impacted satisfaction outcomes. Male and female officers participated equally in completing surveys to identify organizational and operational police stress, romantic partner conflict, and relationship assessment. …

(Re)Building The Master's House: Dismantling America's Colonial Politics Of Extraction And Exclusion, Marissa Jackson Sow

Michigan Law Review Online

On February 10, 2021, and in the days thereafter, liberal American commentators showered Congresswoman Stacey Plaskett with superlatives and praise due to her masterful takedown of former President Donald Trump during his impeachment trial for incitement of the January 6, 2021 Capitol Riot. Referring to a picture of Plaskett wearing a knee-length blue dress with draped sleeves, the political strategist (and daughter of House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi) Christine Pelosi took to Twitter to note that “[n]ot all superheroes wear capes. This one does!”
