Stigma Cities: Birmingham, Alabama And Las Vegas, Nevada In The National Media, 1945-2000, Jonathan Foster
Stigma Cities: Birmingham, Alabama And Las Vegas, Nevada In The National Media, 1945-2000, Jonathan Foster
Psi Sigma Siren
Early in 1994 Time magazine proclaimed Las Vegas, Nevada “The New All American City,” a “city so freakishly democratic” that Americans just could not resist. Twenty-three years earlier, Look magazine had conferred the same title upon Birmingham, Alabama, stressing its progress in race relations. Such media castings of normality must have surprised the American public in both instances. By the time of each city’s designation as “All-American,” the public had long been subjected to stories of their seemingly abnormal internal actions and qualities. Both cities suffered from stigmatized identities in the wider American perception that were fully formed by the …

Failing The Race: A Historical Assessment Of New Orleans Mayor Sidney Barthelemy, 1986-1994, Lyle Kenneth Perkins
Failing The Race: A Historical Assessment Of New Orleans Mayor Sidney Barthelemy, 1986-1994, Lyle Kenneth Perkins
LSU Master's Theses
New Orleans’ voters elected Sidney Barthelemy as the city’s second African American mayor in 1986. Historical treatments of Barthelemy’s tenure generally do not hold him in the same high regard as New Orleans’ first African American mayor, Ernest Morial. Yet, unfavorable evaluations of Barthelemy reflect the maturation of African American politics in the Crescent City. Symbolic victories no longer resonate with an African American populous in need of substantive gains to redress longstanding social and economic inequities. With the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the struggle for African American equality entered its next phase, the transition from …
Women's Participation In Disaster Relief And Recovery, Ayse Yonder, Sengul Akcar, Prema Gopalan
Women's Participation In Disaster Relief And Recovery, Ayse Yonder, Sengul Akcar, Prema Gopalan
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Too little attention has been given to the gender-differentiated effects of natural disasters, that is, women’s losses relative to men’s, how women’s work time and conditions change (both in terms of care-giving and income-generating work), or how disaster-related aid and entitlement programs include or marginalize affected women. The detailed case studies from three earthquake-stricken areas in India and Turkey that are contained in this issue of SEEDS help fill this information gap. They provide examples of how low-income women who have lost everything can form groups and become active participants in the relief and recovery process. Readers learn how women …
An Exploration Of The Quantity And Quality Of Campus Sexual Assault Policies, Kayla Ann Bourg
An Exploration Of The Quantity And Quality Of Campus Sexual Assault Policies, Kayla Ann Bourg
LSU Master's Theses
Sexual assault disproportionately affects female college students, more so than any other group of women in the general population. Therefore, consideration for the safety needs of this particular group of women constitute a great concern for university administrators. Safety measures currently utilized at universities for decreasing sexual assault rates have been insufficient. Some researchers have turned their attention to the role of campus sexual assault policies as a means in which to alleviate this crisis. The present investigation analyzes the prevalence and quality of sexual assault policies at 102 public Doctoral/Research extensive universities in the United States. The majority of …
A Dynamic Simulation Assessment Of English As A Second Language Students' Academic Readiness: An Initial Validation Of A University Admissions Tool, S. "Sha" G. Balizet
A Dynamic Simulation Assessment Of English As A Second Language Students' Academic Readiness: An Initial Validation Of A University Admissions Tool, S. "Sha" G. Balizet
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the measurement quality of the Content Learning Experience: Academic Readiness (CLEAR) test, a new measure for university admissions decisions regarding English as a Second Language (ESL) applicants. The CLEAR test measures ability through dynamic simulation: learning opportunities are followed by testing how well students learned the academic content, all modeled on university instructional experiences.
Measured by the CLEAR is academic readiness (AR), the direct, present evidence of ability to learn academic content via the second language as demonstrated during the dynamic simulation. AR is hypothesized to comprise above-threshold academic language proficiency, personal characteristics, topical knowledge, academic skills, …
To Charge Or Not To Charge?-That Is The Question: The Pursuit Of Strategic Advantage In Prosecutional Decision-Making Surrounding Hate Crime, Beverly Mcphail, Valerie Jenness
To Charge Or Not To Charge?-That Is The Question: The Pursuit Of Strategic Advantage In Prosecutional Decision-Making Surrounding Hate Crime, Beverly Mcphail, Valerie Jenness
Journal of Hate Studies
We asked prosecutors how they think about hate crimes and which factors do and do not influence their decision-making processes when deciding whether to charge a hate crime (add a hate crime enhancement). Our empirical findings along these line provide the first glimpse of the dynamics that underlie the prosecution of hate crime.

Gustav Stickley's Hapke-Geiger House And Noland And Baskervill's Hunton House: Richmond Architecture Ca. 1915, Victoria Katsuko Carter
Theses and Dissertations
Textbooks teach architecture as conveniently divided into styles and periods, but in reality styles overlap. At the turn-of-the-twentieth century there were three major architectural and decorative movements in the United States: the Aesthetic Movement, the Arts and Crafts Movement, and the American Renaissance Movement. This thesis shows how superficial stylistic labels can be by comparing two very different-seeming houses of the early twentieth century: The Hapke-Geiger House of ca. 1912 in Chesterfield, Virginia, based on a Gustav Stickley Arts and Crafts design, and the Hunton House of 19 14 in Richmond, Virginia, designed in the American Renaissance style by Noland …

A Sensitivity Analysis Of A Heuristic Model Used For The Placement Allocation Of Utilities In Transportation Right-Of-Way Corridors, Steve Clarence Christian
A Sensitivity Analysis Of A Heuristic Model Used For The Placement Allocation Of Utilities In Transportation Right-Of-Way Corridors, Steve Clarence Christian
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The requirements for public utility systems in the United States of America have grown enormously over the years triggering a tremendous shortage for space available to public utilities on and within transportation right-of-ways (ROW). Overcrowding and improper location of utilities has resulted in problems such as, damage to infrastructure, traffic accidents and, interruption of service to customers. The project titled, "Optimal Placement of Utilities within FDOT Right-of-Way", sponsored by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), and currently being investigated at the University of South Florida, presents a decision-making heuristic aimed at developing a better utility placement allocation system (Kranc et. …
