Voluntarism And Volunteering, Richard Holtzman Jan 2006

Voluntarism And Volunteering, Richard Holtzman

History and Social Sciences Faculty Journal Articles

To engage in voluntarism, as the term is commonly understood today, is to freely offer support in the service of others. Defining the concept in such general terms, however, ignores a number of important factors, such as the motives leading individuals to choose such action, the means by which the activity occurs, and the broader implications of voluntarism for society. This chapter looks at voluntarism from a historical perspective to demonstrate the numerous and sometimes conflicting ways the concept has been understood. Recognizing voluntarism as a social issue requires examining it in the variety of historical contexts and settings that …

Teaching The Ethical Foundations Of Economics: The Principles Course, Jonathan B. Wight Jan 2006

Teaching The Ethical Foundations Of Economics: The Principles Course, Jonathan B. Wight

Economics Faculty Publications

When we analyze the source of humor, one ingredient is surely incongruity, the juxtaposition of opposites. So when Tom Lehrer, the consummate Harvard mathematician, openly calls for plagiarism, this is funny because it is exactly the opposite of what we expect - it is absurd. And yet, from the viewpoint of modern economics, is plagiarism really so absurd? We teach our students to maximize short-term profits (in a moral vacuum). We drill them that producers minimize private costs of production (without reference to ethical codes of conduct). We expect economic agents to operate with atomistic selfishness, assuring them that this …

The author was a member of a ten member advance team that provided crisis stabilization services to an international union in Lower Manhattan. Taking Accommodation Seriously: Religious Freedom And The O Centro Case, Richard W. Garnett, Joshua D. Dunlap

Journal Articles

The big stories from the Supreme Court's 2005-06 Term were about military commissions and enemy combatants, political redistricting and campaign contributions, and the nomination and confirmation - the first in more than a decade - of two new Justices. Largely overlooked in the crush of Court-related coverage was the Term's lone church-state decision, Gonzalez v. O Centro Espirita Beneficente Uniao do Vegetal, involving the ritualized, but illegal, use by a small religious community from Brazil of a hallucinogenic tea called hoasca. Strictly speaking, O Centro was not a Religion Clauses case at all. It involved the interpretation and …

The Effect Of Transportation Subsidies On Urban Sprawl, Qing Su Jan 2006

The Effect Of Transportation Subsidies On Urban Sprawl, Qing Su

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation investigates transportation subsidies as sources of urban sprawl. Apart from tolls, motorists do not pay highway user-fees, but they do pay gasoline taxes. Gasoline tax revenues are insufficient to cover the U.S. highway costs. Government, therefore, uses general tax revenues to cover highway expenditures. Since users do not pay the full cost of their travel, they have an incentive to travel longer commuting distances. Highway subsidies are, therefore, a potential contributor to urban sprawl. A similar argument applies to public transit. To capture the effects of subsidized automobile and public transit travel, we ex-tend the standard urban spatial …

Investigating Turnover Intention Among Emergency Communication Specialists, Yufan Liu Oct 2005

Investigating Turnover Intention Among Emergency Communication Specialists, Yufan Liu

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study tested a model that uses job stressors, equity sensitivity, perceived organizational justice, and job satisfaction to explain turnover intention and organizational citizenship behavior (OCB). An online survey was distributed to emergency communication specialists from 14 emergency communication centers in Florida. The supervisors in these emergency communication centers were asked to rate their employees on OCB. Responses to the survey and the OCB ratings were analyzed using structural equation modeling to evaluate the fit of a theoretical model to those data. Results showed that the model fit the data reasonably well and nearly all the hypotheses were supported. Specifically, …
