The New York Police Officer: Democratic And Moral Accountability In Conflict, Sarah Ryan, Dan Williams Jan 2007

The New York Police Officer: Democratic And Moral Accountability In Conflict, Sarah Ryan, Dan Williams

Publications and Research

The following case draws upon two views of accountability. One is democratic accountability the other is accountability to one's own moral conscience. As the story unfolds, other facts may get in the way but these central views should not be forgotten. The focus of this case is on the individual. However, the material also covers institutional decisions and policies that deserve considering. The institutional story is the background, not the foreground, of this case. Yet, when the institutional features are considered, they may give new insight to the individuals' decisions.

Visioning The Nation: Classical Images As Allegory During The French Revolution, Kristopher Guy Reed Jan 2007

Visioning The Nation: Classical Images As Allegory During The French Revolution, Kristopher Guy Reed

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the latter half of the Eighteenth Century, France experienced a seismic shift in the nature of political culture. The king gave way to the nation at the center of political life as the location of sovereignty transferred to the people. While the French Revolution changed the structure of France's government, it also changed the allegorical representations of the nation. At the Revolution's onset, the monarchy embodied both the state and nation as equated ideas. During the Revolutionary Decade and through the reign of Napoleon different governments experienced the need to reorient these symbols away from the person of the …

Domestic Anticommunism In Alabama And The Resurgence Of American Conservatism, Jordan R. Bauer Jan 2007

Domestic Anticommunism In Alabama And The Resurgence Of American Conservatism, Jordan R. Bauer

All ETDs from UAB

This thesis examines the pervasive anticommunist movement in Cold War Alabama. It considers the ways in which many white conservative Alabamians used anticommunism to resist the dramatic social and political changes of the 1960s and 1970s. During this time, Alabama’s anticommunist campaign focused on seeking out “subversives” in public schools. Another main target of the state’s anticommunist network was the black civil rights movement. As the struggle for racial equality gained momentum, many white Alabamians responded by labeling civil rights activists as communists. The thesis argues that Alabama’s anticommunist movement was directed against radicals in academia, secularism, the federal government, …

Do You See What I Mean? Measuring Consensus Of Agreement And Understanding Of A National Weather Service Informational Graphic, Lorna M. Geggis Jan 2007

Do You See What I Mean? Measuring Consensus Of Agreement And Understanding Of A National Weather Service Informational Graphic, Lorna M. Geggis

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Media use of hurricane graphics to apprise populations vulnerable to severe weather provides a persuasive demonstration of the importance and complexity of visual communication. Surprisingly little research, however, has explored how audiences interpret weather graphics. This study examined whether the general public and the National Weather Service share a common understanding of selected weather related terms and meaning of a NWS informational graphic. Using a coorientation model, general public responses to a questionnaire were compared to definitions prescribed by the NWS. Additionally, the public were asked questions to measure trust of the NWS as a credible and reliable source of …

Statistical Environmental Models: Hurricanes, Lightning, Rainfall, Floods, Red Tide And Volcanoes, Rebecca Dyanne Wooten

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study consists of developing descriptive, parametric, linear and non-linear statistical models for such natural phenomena as hurricanes, lightning, flooding, red tide and volcanic fallout. In the present study, the focus of research is determining the stochastic nature of phenomena in the environment. These statistical models are necessary to address the variability of nature and the misgivings of the deterministic models, particularly when considering the necessity for man to estimate the occurrence and prepare for the aftermath.

The relationship between statistics and physics looking at the correlation between wind speed and pressure versus wind speed and temperature play a significant …
