The Possibility Of Miracles, Sophia Zimmerman Jun 1926

The Possibility Of Miracles, Sophia Zimmerman

Bachelors’ Theses

In contrasting ancient and modern times, there is, perhaps, no point of difference so outstanding as the general attitude of each age toward the miraculous. Throughout the early ages pagans, Jews and Christians were ever ready to recognize the interference of unseen powers in the course of nature. The idea of the miraculous awoke no aversion in them. Not even the most bitter and most clever enemies of Christianity, such as Celsus and Julian the Apostate, in their efforts to combat Christianity ever attempted the argument that the miracles upon which it rests are impossible, although this would have been …

The Technique Of Cervants’S “Novelas Ejemplares”, Charles Henry Siegmund Jun 1926

The Technique Of Cervants’S “Novelas Ejemplares”, Charles Henry Siegmund

Bachelors’ Theses

This story starts out in the first paragraph with a striking description of what constitutes a gypsy. According to Cervantes’s conception, a member of this tribe is simply surrounded by all the possible circumstances, from birth to death, that will directly contribute to his thievish make-up for which he is universally known. No better definition of a gypsy could be given by any lexicographer. Putting such a descriptive definition into the mind of the reader at once, before going into the real story, is a clever literary procedure, or technique; for, in this manner, the mind is thoroughly impressed with …

Alsace-Lorraine: "La Marseille" Or "Die Wacht Am Rhein", John Joseph Sullivan Jun 1926

Alsace-Lorraine: "La Marseille" Or "Die Wacht Am Rhein", John Joseph Sullivan

Bachelors’ Theses

Alsace-Lorraine has been a disputed, territory since the dawn of history,—fought over by Gaul and Teuton, incorporated in the Roman Empire, conquered by the Francs, lost to the Germans, retaken by France in 1648, torn from her by Prussia in 1871, and finally, in 1918 restored to France as a result of the allied victory in the World War. Such in brief is the history of a people victimized by rivalry between races and sovereigns. It is our purpose here to follow out the above outline a little more in detail, to show how the disputed territory was a major …

The Affinity In Ideals And Ideas Between Robert Browning And Edmond Rostand, John Berhold Lorenze Jun 1926

The Affinity In Ideals And Ideas Between Robert Browning And Edmond Rostand, John Berhold Lorenze

Bachelors’ Theses

The scope of the following thesis is confined to a comparison and a collation of the ideas and ideals of Robert Browning as expressed in his poems, with those of Edmond Rostand, as expressed in his plays; to point out their similarity and their dissimilarity; to demonstrate the fact that Browning lived in an age of skepticism and was himself free from doubt, while Rostand lived in an age of realism and was himself an idealist; to show, therefore, that both stood outside the influences of their age, in that they held fast to certain optimistic conceptions of life, while …

Attacks On The Idea Of Substance, Alex Wilmer Jun 1926

Attacks On The Idea Of Substance, Alex Wilmer

Bachelors’ Theses

The attacks on the validity of the Scholastic idea of substance have their origin in the false theory of knowledge of Descartes and its step-child the Idealism of Locke, Berkeley and Hume. The attack on the validity is to some extent due to a failure to understand the idea of substance, but to a greater extent to the false theory of knowledge that logically developed from Descartes philosophy.

The Tendencies Of American Philosophy During The Nineteenth Century., Lawrence Anthony Sadlek Jun 1926

The Tendencies Of American Philosophy During The Nineteenth Century., Lawrence Anthony Sadlek

Bachelors’ Theses

Before giving a detailed description of the tendencies of American thought during the nineteenth century, I shall give a brief outline of the philosophic tendencies before this time. Puritanism was the dominant school of thought in America during the first century of our existence, and did not die out till the time of the American Revolution. It's chief principles were the passivity of man, determinism and pessimism. They considered man a dull--instrument in the hands of God and his acts predestined; his life was a vain show and this world a vale of tears. They_ believed in a deity separate …

The Will Of Man, Harris George Aschenbrener Jun 1926

The Will Of Man, Harris George Aschenbrener

Bachelors’ Theses

In the popular philosophy of today, namely Materalistic Evolution, attempts have been made to explain everything as the result of the forces of "matter and motion". In rejecting all that the sages of old have offered towards the explanation of phenomena, there are certain problems which are stumbling blocks to this form of philosophy. Many and various theories have been offered but none has been found that will satisfy. Realizing their inability to explain these problems, one of their number has summed them up and termed them seven riddles for which science has no answer, and which will always remain …

Criteria Of Morality, Thomas Francis Flynn Jun 1926

Criteria Of Morality, Thomas Francis Flynn

Bachelors’ Theses

Here is a paradox. The child is father to the man, and philosophically considered, this is doubly true. During that short journey between the advent of that immaculate 'tabula rasa' and the age of reason, the 'homo sapiens' accepts great truths and rests satisfied, seeming to grasp intuitively the profound logic and recondite study behind them. For example, the child of four or five years is apprehended in the replete pantry busily consuming a jar of jam; mother reprimands it severely, saying that it should not do such a thing. "Why?", is the spontaneous and wholly innocent question. "Because jam is …

The Economic And Financial Plight Of Germany From 1914 To 1926, Agnes M. Halbach Jun 1926

The Economic And Financial Plight Of Germany From 1914 To 1926, Agnes M. Halbach

Bachelors’ Theses

Few of us realize the awful economic and financial plight under which Germany has existed during the last twelve years. What a contrast it is to her condition previous to the World War when her people were busy, prosperous, and happy. Vast and phenomenal are the changes that have been brought about in her government, in her economic and financial structures, in her foreign relations, and in her people. Who can estimate the tremendous loss in human life and energy, in national wealth, and in natural resources that the turbulent times have brought upon her.

English Religious Poetry Of The Nineteenth Century As Influenced By The Catholic Spirit, Mary Mida Jun 1926

English Religious Poetry Of The Nineteenth Century As Influenced By The Catholic Spirit, Mary Mida

Master's Theses

Since we are now entering upon the second quarter of the twentieth century, it follows that the perspective thus offered gives ample scope for an authoritative report on the literary output of the preceding century, in the special field chosen - English Religious Poetry. The older English poets wrote from an established point of view, that is, their human creed and their idea of man coincided, while the modern English poets voice the protest or the defense of those who have little in common save the genius of the Bard. This has led to a certain recklessness in the matter …

Behaviorism And Christianity, Daniel Coyner May 1926

Behaviorism And Christianity, Daniel Coyner

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of our discussion, however, is not so much to reveal the weak features of behaviorism as it is to place it in juxtaposition with Christianity and point out the incongruities. We have seen that the philosophical basis upon which the superstructure of behaviorism has been raised is a problem that has not bothered many of the behaviorists. Most of them have chosen to remain indifferent to this groundwork - apparently because it is not objective enough for them. But whether it be objective or subjective, Christianity has a very definite philosophical basis and our comparison of the two …
