Literary Origins Of John Henry Cardinal Newman, Anne M. De Laney Jun 1927

Literary Origins Of John Henry Cardinal Newman, Anne M. De Laney

Bachelors’ Theses

A man's name is inscribed in a Biographical Dictionary by the date of his birth; but in reality it is his death that ranges him in the heart and mind of humanity.

Contributary factors to his imminent greatness are often minimized in importance; and yet those factors are essentially so many milestones in the way of his achievements.

Even so it is with Newman. Biographers have given us certain facts concerning his life; critics have told us the relative value of his. writings; while time has told us of his unique greatness. It is admittedly difficult in a biographical sketch. …

The Technique Of The Drama Of John Galsworthy, Irene Louise Edwards Jun 1927

The Technique Of The Drama Of John Galsworthy, Irene Louise Edwards

Bachelors’ Theses

Since 1906 when John Galsworthy published "The Silver Box", he has produced nineteen dramas and a number of one act plays; and Phelps says "he has produced nothing negligible". (Phelps: "Essays on Modern Dramatists" p. 100 ). In his very first play, he used a technique which he has continued to follow with more or less precision and perfection in the later dramas ( except "The Little Dream"). He did not flounder about as did the pacemakers of modern drams. He found his medium ready-made for him in naturalism, and he adopted it. It was the most suitable for the …

The History Of The Deductive Detective Story From Poe To Freeman And Bailey With A Critical Comparison, Raymond F. Erz Jun 1927

The History Of The Deductive Detective Story From Poe To Freeman And Bailey With A Critical Comparison, Raymond F. Erz

Bachelors’ Theses

Ever since the beginning of man universal interest has been centered about these three magnetic words: MYSTERY, INTRIGUE, ADVENTURE. A famous author once said, "All the world's a stage and we are the actors in it. This in every respect is true for ourselves as well as for every body else. Plots are being formulated to shorten the existence of one character for the other, the act is done, the stage is minus a personage, the actors hesitate, and the show goes on.

Shakespeare And The Aristotelian Katharsis Specifically Studied In The Plays Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, And Macbeth, Meta Charlotte Kortebein Jun 1927

Shakespeare And The Aristotelian Katharsis Specifically Studied In The Plays Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, And Macbeth, Meta Charlotte Kortebein

Bachelors’ Theses

In studying Shakespeare with a view to his complying with Aristotle’s idea of the Tragic Katharsis it is primarily necessary to have a clear conception of the meaning of Katharsis and Aristotle's valuation of its function in the tragedy. After such knowledge has been firmly acquired it will facilitate a reading of Shakespeare from the standpoint of Katharsis.

John Millington Synge And The Irish Dramatic Revival, Ethel L. Kuehn Jun 1927

John Millington Synge And The Irish Dramatic Revival, Ethel L. Kuehn

Bachelors’ Theses

If poetry be “emotion remembered in tranquillity," as Wordsworth said, then drama is, or must seem to be, emotion visualized in action. Drama, by its nature,- can come into being only when men are moved powerfully and suddenly to record the circumstances of life; for the dramatic form is the most exacting of literary forms, demanding a high and sustained emotion in the author. The great ages of drama have thus been those when life has been raised to an unusual intensity, or viewed with an excited surprise. The artist may take what he desires from life, and, letting all …

Contemporary American Drama: William Vaughn Moody And Eugene O'Neil, Helen F. Corrigan Jun 1927

Contemporary American Drama: William Vaughn Moody And Eugene O'Neil, Helen F. Corrigan

Bachelors’ Theses

In any study of contemporary American drama, two names inevitably stand out from among the myriads of native playwrights - those names - William Vaughn Moody and Eugene O'Neil. Yet neither of these can be literary pigeon-holed. Moody's death prevented him reaching his full development. Consequently his work is mostly indicative - indicative of what it might have been had he lived.

Mysticism In The Metaphysical School Of Poets, Jessie Donaldson Corrigan Jun 1927

Mysticism In The Metaphysical School Of Poets, Jessie Donaldson Corrigan

Bachelors’ Theses

In the desire to transcend the physical world, men of every age have set foot upon the "Mystic Way". This desire, which is a thing internal and intuitive, has been called the "instinct for transcendence." Once upon the mystic way, "the wistful eyes of Life are set towards a vision that is also a Home - a Home from which news can reach us now and again".

A Critique Of Goodspeed's Translation Of The Gospels, Arthur F. Fergin May 1927

A Critique Of Goodspeed's Translation Of The Gospels, Arthur F. Fergin

Bachelor of Divinity

In the execution of this treatise the translation of Goodspeed will be studied on the basis of the original Greek text. The critique will thus seek to establish whether the translation is true to the original. Since no other translation has till now successfully supplanted the Authorized Version, the later will be used in establishing the conclusions reached in this thesis. It is necessary to state at the outset, however, that such a procedure will not in all cases be fair to the translation of Goodspeed. Goodspeed has a better equipment in the way of an authoritative text and grammatical …

The Beautiful, Richard Frederick Kegel May 1927

The Beautiful, Richard Frederick Kegel

Bachelors’ Theses

"I don't know much about Art,but I know what I like'! is the hedonistic philosophy, the cause of the degradation of the fine arts whose end is the creation of beauty. The logical conclusions of this view are astonishing; Beauty is made a servile thing to be used for our pleasure;its value is made purely utilitarian. Beauty suffers the same fate dealt to truth and goodness. To say "I know, what I like", implies, I see a thing not because it is beautiful but because I love it,which is the next step to not seeing a thing that is beautiful because …

Conscience Its Nature And Function, Richard R. Caemmerer Apr 1927

Conscience Its Nature And Function, Richard R. Caemmerer

Bachelor of Divinity

The subject as stated in itself excludes the problem of the origin of conscience, a large field especially in phylogenetic theories (theories of remorse, origin of duty, origin of the good); it excludes the practical aspects and applications of the doctrines of conscience (systems of casuistry; social sphere of conscience; freedom of conscience). The subject has been-further limited, a procedure demanded by considerations of time and space, by a particular viewpoint applied to this discussion. The viewpoint permits formulation in the shape of a statement of the problem, namely: To determine the validity of the term "conscience" as an ethical …

The Jewish Festivals Mentioned In The New Testament, Walter W. Koenig Apr 1927

The Jewish Festivals Mentioned In The New Testament, Walter W. Koenig

Bachelor of Divinity

As far as the life of the New Testament believer is concerned, the ancient festivals of the Jews are null and void. All Old Testament rites and ceremonies, which were only "a shadow of things to come” (Col. 2,16), have been abrogated by the coming of God's Son into the flesh. But even though the Jewish festivals are no longer to be observed by us, we cannot afford to forget all about them. Leaving the Old Testament out of the question altogether, the proper understanding of the New Testament alone demands a thorough investigation of all that is connected with …
