James Michael Curley Scrapbooks

The James Michael Curley Scrapbook Collection consists of digitized microfilmed copies of notebooks kept by Curley from 1914-1937. These notebooks contain news clippings that were drawn primarily from Boston newspapers. Curley was born in Roxbury, MA in 1874. He served four terms as Mayor of Boston: 1914–1918, 1922–1926, 1930–1934 and 1946–1950. He also served as Governor of Massachusetts from 1935-1937. In addition to Curley’s political career, the scrapbooks also include clippings about his first wife Mrs. Mary Herlihy Curley (1884-1930) and their daughter Mary D. Curley (1909-1950). Teacola 1931, Jacksonville State University Jan 1931

Teacola 1931, Jacksonville State University

JSU Yearbooks

The JSU Yearbook Collection spans the years from 1926 to the present. The publication began in 1926 as the Teacola (some volumes spelled "Teacoala") and continued under this title through 1933. The yearbook appears to have ceased printing after that year; the student newspaper took the name Teacola (later changed to the Collegian and finally the Chanticleer) and began publication in 1934. The yearbook started up again in 1947 under the name Mimosa. The Library holds all volume years that were printed: 1926-1933, 1947-1950, 1952-present.

The Case For High School Dramatics : Including A Survey Of The Status Of Dramatics In The High Schools Of California, Musa Evans Davis Jan 1931

The Case For High School Dramatics : Including A Survey Of The Status Of Dramatics In The High Schools Of California, Musa Evans Davis

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In presenting The Case for High School Dramatics the writer wishes, in advance, to be relieved of any charge of specious pleading. It is not maintained that the dramatic method offers a panacea for the teaching of English, for she is also an advocate of continuous drill in the fundamental processes.

In this case of special pleading, however, the effective points of the dramatic method are emphasized to the best of the pleader's ability, and wholly without prejudice to other satisfactory methods of motivating oral and written English.

Several years of study arid observation in the milieu, and the pragmatic …

Poverty And Problems Of The Mexican Immigrant, Joseph M. Santos Jan 1931

Poverty And Problems Of The Mexican Immigrant, Joseph M. Santos

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this introductory chapter is to make clear the intent of the entire study. First of all, no attempt is made at claiming any distinction for originality, as the information contained herein is gathered from books, magazines, newspapers, conversations with experienced business men and labor men, and some from personal observation.

The present unemployment situation causes many people to question our government's policy of leaving our "gates" open to Mexican immigration. Many are the figures that we hear quoted in an effort to bolster personal views on this problem. Dr. Manual Gamio urges a limitation placed on Mexican …

The Defects Of The Civil Service System, Josephine B. Herron Jan 1931

The Defects Of The Civil Service System, Josephine B. Herron

Graduate Thesis Collection

When the new government of the United States was put into operation, one of the first tasks with which it had to deal was that of filling offices, in order that the Constitution and the laws passed under it might be enforced.  President Washington, whose chief characteristics were good judgment and punctilious exactness, was allowed to use his discretion in the question of qualifications.  He realized the difference between appointing men barely fit to fill their offices, and appointing those who were most fit.

Eugene O'Neill And His Prize Winning Plays, Joesph Flynn Rice Jan 1931

Eugene O'Neill And His Prize Winning Plays, Joesph Flynn Rice

Bachelors’ Theses

Eugene O’Neill has ever walked alone and seemed a stranger to those about him. In his photographs you will see a mask of arrogant disdain. The tortured dreamer’s eyes, the tossed black head with its streaks of white, the scowling, thunderous face glimpsed at some formal dress rehearsal, escaping from praise, seem to confirm the legend.

The United States Military Occupation Of The Republic Of Haiti, Thomas John Stevens Jan 1931

The United States Military Occupation Of The Republic Of Haiti, Thomas John Stevens

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The treaty to establish a protectorate over Haiti is another step by the United States in the Americanization of the Caribbean area. These extensions have become a fixed policy of the Department of States. The Republicans and Democrats heartily support the United States government in her program of expansion. Protests will continue, but once the United States gets in, she will stay in. Already she has gone far from the position that she occupied when she first went in. The United States has always had a policy of expansion from early colonial period. She has extended control west, south, and …
