Essay Or Sermon? Recitation Or Preaching?, J. H. Fritz May 1932

Essay Or Sermon? Recitation Or Preaching?, J. H. Fritz

Concordia Theological Monthly

Some preachers write religious essays, learn them by heart, and then recite them in the pulpit. They have not learned to distinguish between the essay style and the oral style. An essay is not a sermon; a recitation is not preaching.

Plays Of The Quinteros, Carolyn Elizabeth Stehling May 1932

Plays Of The Quinteros, Carolyn Elizabeth Stehling

Bachelors’ Theses

Dramatic poetry began but late in Spain, though it was to flower there so brilliantly. In Spain, as in France, England, and in fact in practically all other countries, the drama grew out of the liturgical cere¬ monies of the Church. Some of them, in particular the Passion and Nativity adapted themselves readily to stage presentations. These elements developed when French Monks introduced, together with other customs of their native Churches, this type of literature which was already flourishing in France. The legal texts of the Middle Ages, the "Puerto Juzgo" and later the "Siete Partidas", shed some light upon …

Devices In Spelling, Corinne H. Standish May 1932

Devices In Spelling, Corinne H. Standish

Bachelors’ Theses

To a large majority of teachers, spelling is a hopeless subject. Frank M. McMurry says in the introduction of "The Teaching of Spelling" by Henry Suzzallo; "It seems to lack the possibility of such rich subject matter as makes reading and history attractive; and to want that organization of its facts that distinguishes every worthy branch of knowledge, since the units that compose it are not thoughts, but merely individual words. In consequence, it is recognized as almost entirely a mechanical study, providing little skill from the teacher, and depending mainly on mere repetition or brute endurance for mastery."

The Rationality Of Belief, Thos. G. Egan May 1932

The Rationality Of Belief, Thos. G. Egan

Bachelors’ Theses

In a philosophical discussion it is necessary, before any hope of mutual understanding can be attained, to make clear the meanings in which terms are to be used. this, I believe, is especially true in any investigation concerning the mind. The modern controversies about knowledge, how it is acquired, and whether or not knowledge is really attainable are too numerous to describe. Materialistic systems of philosophy all base their arguments on the central thesis that the mind is the brain and that there is no necessity of supposing a spiritual entity. An inspection of our concepts demonstrates the folly of …

The Relation Of Faith And Reason In The Philosophy Of St. Thomas Aquinas, Leo A. Fendryk May 1932

The Relation Of Faith And Reason In The Philosophy Of St. Thomas Aquinas, Leo A. Fendryk

Bachelors’ Theses

The history of philosophy is a story of few problems and many solutions. From Thales of Miletus to Jacques Maritain and Christopher Dawson, man has sought to answer for questions concerning the things of his experience. Those questions are the what, the whence, the why, and the who. Man has answered these questions in a variety of ways, and in his answers he has left behind him his philosophic systems for the ages to interpret.

Imitations Of Greek Tragedy In English Literature, Janet O'Neill May 1932

Imitations Of Greek Tragedy In English Literature, Janet O'Neill

Bachelors’ Theses

In the pages that follow there has been no attempt to cover the entire subject of imitations of Greek tragedy in English literature. Four prominet literary works, considered as imitations of Greek tragedy, have been selected for discussion as to their imitative qualities. The guiding principles for this discussion were gathered from a perusal and analysis of the works of Sophocles, Aeschylus, and Euripides. Much valuable information was also gained from The Tragic Drama of the Greeks, by A. E. Haigh.

The Fench Writers In The Seventeenth Century: The Literary Works Of Corneille Converted And Stabilized The French Language, Bernard Raphael May 1932

The Fench Writers In The Seventeenth Century: The Literary Works Of Corneille Converted And Stabilized The French Language, Bernard Raphael

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis, submitted to Xavier University in partial fulfillment of requirements for a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1932, argues that the literary work of Pierre Corneille converted and stabilized the French language during the seventeenth century. It surveys the major literary institutions and figures shaping French letters during this period, including the Salon de Rambouillet and its role in refining literary taste, and the founding of the French Academy under Richelieu and its work compiling the French dictionary. Corneille's development of French classical tragedy is examined in detail, particularly through "Le Cid," with attention to his treatment of the …
