Open Worship As Corporate Altar, Paul N. Anderson
Open Worship As Corporate Altar, Paul N. Anderson
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
Excerpt: "Open worship is one of those traditions Friends embrace, but often we do so without much thought as to how to use the time meaningfully. The tendency is to be uncomfortable with too much silence and to fill the "empty" space with words. After all, silence is a strange and foreign commodity within today's noisy society. Turning on the television or stereo becomes a semiautomatic reflex when faced with the shock of a quiet room. Seldom do we find ourselves able to pray for more than three or four minutes because of acute "spiritual attention deficit." We crave entertainment, …

Cumberland County, Virginia, In The Late Antebellum Period, 1840-1860, William Maphis Whitworth Jr.
Master's Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to examine and describe the lives of the citizens of a rural, agricultural Virginia County which had a social and economic order based on the institution of slavery. This system was dominated by a wealthy white minority which had the ability to use the existing components of government to perpetuate itself. All aspects of the county were explored, including its origins, geography, population, county court system, representation in state and federal government, economy, transportation, communication, religion, education, and health care.
There was an abundance of available primary sources which gave insights into the county's …
A Health-Education Program For Seventh-Day Adventists In Japan Based On The Dynamics Of Psychosomatic Relationships, Keith Yoskikazu Watanabe
A Health-Education Program For Seventh-Day Adventists In Japan Based On The Dynamics Of Psychosomatic Relationships, Keith Yoskikazu Watanabe
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Problem. Current interest in health caused by a recent increase in information on the intimate relationship between degenerative diseases and lifestyle presents a challenge to Seventh-day Adventists in Japan, who have been entrusted with the health-reform message. A lack of proper health education programs based on a holistic understanding of the human person led the author to study the Biblical, philosophical, and scientific data relevant to the psychosomatic relationship and to design a health education program to be implemented by the SDAs in Japan.
Method. Scriptural study on psychosomatic relationships was attempted with exegetical study of seven selected passages, viz., …

An Ethnohistorical Study Of The Swan-Canning Fishery In Western Australia, 1697-1837, Paul R. Weaver
Theses : Honours
The study takes a multidisciplinary approach by examining historical and contemporary scientific literature in order to determine the degree of intercultural competition which took place between Aborigines and Europeans for the native food resources which were associated with the Swan-Canning estuarine system, which is located in the south west of Western Australia, at approximately longitude 116" E. and latitude 32" S. The 1697-1827 time frame of the study, covers all the documented pre-colonial European visits to the fishery environs and also incorporates the first decade of the British colonisation process at the Swan River, which can be said to have …

History And Analysis Of Food Guides In The United States, Barbara B. Carlson
History And Analysis Of Food Guides In The United States, Barbara B. Carlson
Health Services Research Dissertations
This work elucidates the development of nutrient-based dietary standards in the United States from the original energy and protein-based standards proposed by Atwater in 1894 to the micronutrient-based Recommended Dietary Allowances revised by the National Research Council in 1989. This qualitative historical research chronicles the development and subsequent revisions of nutrient-based food guides and food guidance models issued in the United States between 1916 and 1991. A literature search of historical food guides, research, and review papers from the fields of nutrition science and education, dietetics, and health science provided primary sources of information for the history. A literature search …
