Development, Implementation, And Evaluation Of A Seminar On Positive Resolution Of Interpersonal And Substantive Conflict In The Hazelton, British Columbia, Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Bruce B. Boyd

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

Some form of conflict is associated with virtually every human relationship, including relationships involving Christians. Negative conflict situations frequently injure Christians, and sometimes conflicts are severe enough to cripple churches. The purpose of this project was to study whether the teaching of concepts and skills that are, first, related to the management and resolution of interpersonal and substantive conflict, and second, congruent with biblical principles will have a positive impact upon how parishioners understand conflict and, as a result, upon how they behave in conflict situations so that the negative results of conflict are reduced and the positive results …

"Yet I Must Submit": Mormon Women's Perspectives On Death And Dying 1847-1900, Julie Paige Hemming Savage Jan 1995

"Yet I Must Submit": Mormon Women's Perspectives On Death And Dying 1847-1900, Julie Paige Hemming Savage

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores Mormon women's experiences with death as revealed in their personal writings from 1847-1900. The study includes an examination of women's involvement in caring for the sick and tending to the dead, as well as an exploration of women's personal reactions to death. A careful reading of Mormon women's writings from this period reveals that Mormonism equipped believers with powerful doctrines and rituals which helped women cope with the sorrow and profound grief that accompanied the deaths of those they loved. In addition, members living in Mormon communities rendered invaluable physical, emotional, and spiritual support to each other …

Scientific Discipline And The Origins Of Race: A Foucaultian Reading Of The History Of Biology, Ladelle Mcwhorter Jan 1995

Scientific Discipline And The Origins Of Race: A Foucaultian Reading Of The History Of Biology, Ladelle Mcwhorter

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Foucault's "power-knowledge" is a controversial concept. Brought into English-speaking theoretical circles less than two decades ago, its meaning and range of applicability are still in dispute. While no one denies that some fields of social scientific knowledge (such as criminology) intersect institutionally with mechanisms of power, these intersections do not seem, to many, to constitute any essential relation of "mutual reinforcement" between knowledge and power. If, in rare cases, politics and scientific research are admitted to be mutually constitutive, the results of their mingling are typically dismissed as propaganda or pseudo-science. A few thinkers are willing to allow the entirety …

An Analysis Of The Social Profile Of The Kilfoyles Of Rosewood Station, Geraldine Byrne Jan 1995

An Analysis Of The Social Profile Of The Kilfoyles Of Rosewood Station, Geraldine Byrne

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Thomas Kilfoyle (1842-1908) participated in the 1883-1885 overlanding expedition from Queensland to the newly opened Kimberley district. There he became one of the founders of Rosewood Station, a property which under the guidance of Kilfoyle and son Jack (1893-1962) became an outstanding example of successful owner/management of a north Australian beef cattle station. Among the objectives of this thesis it is important to identify the major features in the Kilfoyles' management policies which enabled them to survive environmental and economic changes which brought many of their neighbours into financial difficulty. An important element was their successful management of Aboriginal labour, …

Dreyfus Case Began Century Ago, Donald E. Wilkes Jr. Oct 1994

Dreyfus Case Began Century Ago, Donald E. Wilkes Jr.

Popular Media

Imagine the scene. It is 100 years ago, Monday, Oct. 15, 1894, in Paris, France. The Dreyfus case -- the most notorious frameup of the 19th century, one of the most incredible episodes in criminal jurisprudence, and an important chapter in the history of antisemitism -- is about to commence. It is 8 in the morning. Capt. Alfred Dreyfus, a 35-year old Jewish officer in the French army, is kissing his wife and two children goodbye in their apartment on Avenue du Trocadero (now Avenue du President Wilson) and about to begin the half-hour walk to army headquarters on Rue …

What Science Can And Cannot Offer To A Religious Narrative, Ursula W. Goodenough Sep 1994

What Science Can And Cannot Offer To A Religious Narrative, Ursula W. Goodenough

Biology Faculty Research

A molecular/cell biologist offers perspectives on the contributions that the scientific worldview might and might not make to religious though. It is argued that two essential features of institutionalized religions–their historical context and their supernatural orientation—are not addressed by the sciences, nor can the sciences contribute to the art and ritual that elicit states of faith and transcendence. The sciences have, however, important stories (myths) to offer, stories that have the potential to unify us, to tell us what is sacred, what has meaning, and how we might best proceed.

This paper, in slightly different form, was first presented before …
