History Theses & Dissertations

The Civil War played a major role in the transformation of nursing from a domestic service to a genuine profession for women. Thousands of women moved into the public space of the battlefield to care for the sick and wounded, transferring their domestic skills to the administration of military hospitals and the gathering and distribution of sanitary supplies.
