IASDR Conference Series
In recent years, visual perception has gained growing attention in consumer marketing due to its pivotal role in purchase decision-making. As a core element of marketing communication, visual information not only affects consumers' initial attention and product recognition but also shapes their subsequent choices. However, how sustainable product packaging effectively conveys a clear and compelling sustainability image in cluttered retail shelf contexts remains a significant challenge. This study combines eye-tracking technology with customer journey maps (CJM) and semi-structured interviews to thoroughly examine consumers' visual responses and decision-making processes regarding sustainable beverage packaging in convenience stores. The findings reveal that consumers' …

Designing Exploratory Technologies For Early-Stage Behavior Change, Flavio Da Cunha Nerva, Celso Carnos Scaletsky, Leandro Miletto Tonetto
IASDR Conference Series
This qualitative study proposes a new method for designing exploratory technologies aimed at promoting behavior awareness during the Pre contemplation stage of the Trans theoretical Model (TTM) of behavior change. In this early stage, individuals are often unaware of problematic behaviors and lack motivation to act. Exploratory technologies, defined here as artifacts that help users uncover and interpret personal information, offer a way to stimulate self-reflection without imposing predefined goals. To address "invisible behaviors," meaning those unconscious or unrecognized by individuals, we created the Method for the Development of Exploratory Technologies based on Metaphors (MDExTM). Drawing from cognitive behavioral theory …
Establishing Generalizable Garment–Body Interaction Models Through 4d Biomechanical Analysis, Xiaolu Li, Chongyang Ye, Joanne Yip
Establishing Generalizable Garment–Body Interaction Models Through 4d Biomechanical Analysis, Xiaolu Li, Chongyang Ye, Joanne Yip
IASDR Conference Series
Accurate simulation of garment–body interactions is essential for enhancing virtual prototyping in apparel design. However, conventional virtual prototyping platforms rely on rigid avatars that inadequately reflect the complex deformation of human soft tissues, particularly for tight-fitting sportswear. Biomechanical models have been developed to address this issue. Nevertheless, their subject-specificity and reliance on specific imaging data limited their applicability across diverse body types and motions. To overcome these limitations, this study establishes a comprehensive scientific basis for understanding the biomechanical characteristics of soft tissues in young female adults, based on population-level 4D body scanning analysis. Specifically, 4D body scanning technology was …

Wellbeing-Based Service Design Pattern For Elderly Wellness Tourism In Taiwan's Aging Society, Su-Shin Low, Chia-Han Yang
IASDR Conference Series
This study explores a service design model for elderly wellness tourism in Taiwan through the lens of well-being. Amidst rapid population aging in Asia, particularly in Chinese societies, wellness tourism is gaining relevance for promoting seniors’ physical and mental health. Beyond providing relaxation, such experiences can alleviate chronic conditions and serve as a means for intergenerational bonding and expressions of filial piety. While previous research has examined the link between wellness tourism and well-being, gaps remain in understanding elderly users’ perspectives within specific cultural contexts. To address this gap, the study adopts a well-being framework—integrating both hedonic and eudaimonic dimensions—to …
Sensing Soil Habitability: Relational Data For Multispecies Attunement, Diya Samit, Mathias Funk, Bahareh Barati
Sensing Soil Habitability: Relational Data For Multispecies Attunement, Diya Samit, Mathias Funk, Bahareh Barati
IASDR Conference Series
Design research increasingly engages with ecological complexity through the emerging bodies of More- than-Human design (MtHD) and biodesign. While these fields share topical concerns, they differ in their onto-epistemological orientations, particularly in how they employ data. Biodesign often harnesses data to engineer novel functions in living systems, whereas MtHD emphasizes relationality, care, and designing with other-than-humans. Despite growing interest in bridging these perspectives, data practices at their intersection remain predominantly representational or oriented towards instrumental control. This paper responds to calls for rethinking data by introducing Soil Habitability as both a conceptual and methodological lens, grounded in an exploratory research-through-design …

The Creative Process In Interdisciplinary Teams: A Dual Mechanism Model, Shyhnan Liou, Chi-Yue Chiu, Ingri P. Hernandez Sibo, Davi A. Gomez Celis, Yu-Chen Chen, Shin-Bou Lin, Shu-Ting Ai, Chi-Yi Chang
IASDR Conference Series
Interdisciplinary teams are crucial for organizational innovation but face a dual-process challenge: disciplinary differences can either foster creativity-enhancing integrative complexity or hinder it through intellectual centrism. This study examines these opposing mechanisms and their contingent factors. Drawing on paradox theory, we propose that conflict arising from disciplinary differences activates: (1) integrative complexity (the differentiation and integration of contradictory perspectives), which enhances creative performance; and (2) intellectual centrism (a rigid adherence to one’s discipline), which inhibits creativity. Paradoxical task framing (e.g., pursuing novelty and practicality) intensifies both mechanisms. Notably, these effects primarily emerge during the convergent phase (idea selection) of the …

Embodied Collaboration Game Design: Exploring Parent-Child Emotional Bonding Through Motion-Based Interaction, Yufei Zeng, Mengting Xue, Zhizhi Wang, Junjie Zhang
IASDR Conference Series
In contemporary family life shaped by digital media, face-to-face communication between parents and children is increasingly limited. Traditional companion-style games often fail to support both emotional bonding and collaborative interaction. Grounded in embodied cognition theory, this study introduces a motion-based parent–child game with a “lighting–collection” mechanism and role-based task division. The system promotes non-verbal coordination and physical cooperation in a non-competitive setting. A mixed-method study involving eight families with children aged 6–9 evaluated its impact through behavioural observation, task performance, and emotional feedback. Results show that embodied interaction provides a novel channel for engagement beyond verbal exchange, while non-verbal collaboration …

Designing For Diversity: Identifying Determinants To Guide Personalization Of Ehealth Tools, Jasper Faber, Sander Hoef Van Der, Sofie Willems, Jos Kraal
IASDR Conference Series
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) refers to the co-occurrence of health conditions that increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. It disproportionately affects low socioeconomic (SEP) populations, and traditional healthcare often fails to support lasting lifestyle changes. While eHealth interventions are promising many lack personalization for high-risk, low-SEP groups. To bridge this gap, we developed the HealthBox, a tailored eHealth tool combining tele monitoring and digital coaching to promote healthier habits and reduce chronic disease risk. A key step was understanding user diversity to guide personalization strategies. In this first-phase study, we conducted semi- structured interviews with nine …
An Illustrated Guide To Edible Flora In The Neo-Plasticene: From Empirical Research To Sensory Speculation Through Design, Hsiu-Fang Cheng, Rung-Huei Liang
An Illustrated Guide To Edible Flora In The Neo-Plasticene: From Empirical Research To Sensory Speculation Through Design, Hsiu-Fang Cheng, Rung-Huei Liang
IASDR Conference Series
As micro plastics gradually infiltrate the physiological structures and sensory characteristics of edible plants, this study combines empirical research and speculative design to construct an illustrated guide of edible flora in the “New Plastic Age”, which we herein conceptualize as the Neo-Plasticene. Through AI-assisted narrative and visual generation, the guide simulates potential morphological and sensory mutations in plants subjected to pollution stress—articulating intermediary species positioned between nature and artificiality, defined by their latent transformation and persistent edibility. This project addresses the perceptual challenge of slow ecological mutation by proposing the guidebook as a design medium for future food narratives and …
A Pseudo-Haptic Approach To Alleviate Cognitive Fatigue In Virtual Reality Strength Training, Rintaro Ichida, Yuuta Tanaka, Naoto Yoshida
A Pseudo-Haptic Approach To Alleviate Cognitive Fatigue In Virtual Reality Strength Training, Rintaro Ichida, Yuuta Tanaka, Naoto Yoshida
IASDR Conference Series
We investigated two pseudo-haptic feedback techniques for virtual reality (VR) strength training aimed at modulating perceived weight and cognitive fatigue. Both methods visually amplified the motion of a real dumbbell relative to users’ physical movement: a nonlinear transformation that preserved spatial alignment at the start and end of each motion, and a constant gain that uniformly scaled displacement without endpoint consistency. Experimental results showed that the constant gain approach led to greater reductions in perceived weight compared to the nonlinear method, particularly during the early stages of training, while the nonlinear method had only marginal effects. The constant gain technique …
“Narrative Medicine Saved My Life”: Writing Is A Verb As Well As A Noun, Marian M. Maccurdy, Sarah Robinson
“Narrative Medicine Saved My Life”: Writing Is A Verb As Well As A Noun, Marian M. Maccurdy, Sarah Robinson
The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning
Dedicated to Professor Peter Elbow 4/14/1935 – 2/6/2025
I, Marian, began my career as a graduate student in medieval literature who had a teaching assistantship to fund her degree. As a graduate student I lived in a world that saw writing as a noun, something done and finished, not as a verb, a process that shows us a world that is as ever-changing as we are. But as a writing teacher I found myself sliding into the world that writers inhabit, and
The Spiritual Care Of Hospice Patients With Cognitive Deficits, Shane Sullivan
The Spiritual Care Of Hospice Patients With Cognitive Deficits, Shane Sullivan
Doctor of Ministry Theses and Dissertations
ABSTRACT How can a hospice chaplain know whether their presence and ministry make a meaningful difference when visiting patients with dementia or other serious cognitive impairments? This project thesis seeks to answer that question conclusively. The theological foundation of this project centers on the doctrine of the imago Dei—the image of God—as it relates to individuals who are dying with cognitive deficits. Specifically, it explores how a person who is helpless and near death continues to reflect the image of God. The project intervention described here is the creation of a specialized training guide for hospice chaplains at Bridge Hospice …

Knowing One's Place At The Table: Taste As A Means Of Othering In The American Colonies, 1700-1775, Nicholas Harp
Knowing One's Place At The Table: Taste As A Means Of Othering In The American Colonies, 1700-1775, Nicholas Harp
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
This thesis began as an inquiry into a simple question. How did people in the American colonies talk about the food that they ate? This question led to a fascinating look into the social dynamics of the people living in eighteenth century America. Their own personal writings demonstrate how they understood their place in society through the food that they ate. Moreover, they often wrote about the way that other people ate in ways that alienated or discriminated against different ethnic groups. A look into the secondary historiography revealed that other historians had noticed this trend. However, very few addressed …
Of The Freedom Famine In Palestine, Ibtisam Barakat
Of The Freedom Famine In Palestine, Ibtisam Barakat
International Dialogue
In this searing essay, poet and author Ibtisam Barakat bears witness to what she names the “Freedom Famine” in Gaza—a deliberate, decades-long deprivation of basic human rights culminating in the catastrophic conditions of 2025. Writing from the United States while in conversation with Gazan author Omar Hammash, Barakat juxtaposes their drastically unequal realities: her safety and his daily encounters with death, displacement, and starvation. Through Hammash’s testimony—delivered amid constant bombardment and interrupted by news of a friend’s killing—Barakat documents the collapse of Gaza’s infrastructure, the mass targeting of aid workers, the lethal failures of international relief, and the killing of …
Abstract Attention, Colorized, Marianne Koleng
Abstract Attention, Colorized, Marianne Koleng
be Still
This vibrant abstract painting that explores the fluidity of human feelings through bold, sweeping brushstrokes and a contrasting color palette. Bursts of red and orange suggest intensity and passion, while cooler blues and grays add a sense of introspection and calm. The lack of defined forms invites viewers to project their own interpretations, making the piece a dynamic reflection of chaos and beauty in the search for attention.
I Want You To Want Me, Marianne Koleng
I Want You To Want Me, Marianne Koleng
be Still
This piece calls to the theme of "attention" through a mixed media piece incorporating collage, ink, and colored pencil. It embraces the nuances of both anatomy and popular music, rock-and-roll, to be specific. The title is taken from the popular song by Cheap Trick, of the same name in an effort to elude to the desire for human attention in a human form.
Even Flow, Marianne Koleng
Even Flow, Marianne Koleng
be Still
This piece attempts to connect the "ebb and flow" of music and art with the sometimes strict interpretation of anatomy. It calls to attention what often seem as opposites - the cold nature of medicine and science with the seemingly warm and free nature of music and art. While many see them as opposites, this piece attempts to convey they are really two sides of the same coin.
Curating Serenity, Archana Banda
Curating Serenity, Archana Banda
be Still
Attention to me is appreciating the simplest things amidst the joys and hardships of life. Throughout my medical school journey, I have rediscovered the importance of practicing self-care, gratitude, and embracing an abundance mindset. Being self-aware about our own health and optimizing it allows us to care for patients with the utmost compassion and generosity. Paying attention as future physicians means empathizing with patients at their most vulnerable moments and restoring hope in a brighter future. Attention and generosity are inherently interconnected because when providers are attentive to their patients’ health concerns, they can be generous with their time and …
Cultural Roots Of Eating: A Comparative Analysis Of Organic Discourse And Marketing Practices In China And The United States, Zubing (Jane) Guo
Cultural Roots Of Eating: A Comparative Analysis Of Organic Discourse And Marketing Practices In China And The United States, Zubing (Jane) Guo
Honors Theses
This thesis examines how cultural frameworks influence the development of the organic food market and shape individual attitudes towards the label “organic” in the U.S. and China. While the popularity of organic food has increased in recent years, cognitive and behavioral reactions toward the label “organic” have differed across societies. In the U.S., healthy eating discourse aligns closely with the individualistic culture and atomistic cognitive style, highlighting the importance of salient elements such as specific nutrients or chemical use. In contrast, Chinese healthy eating discourse is based on balance and harmony, which is directly related to traditional Chinese culture of …

Fermentative Processes Of The Agricultural Food System In The Upper Rio Negro: Ethnographic Notes On Feminine Knowledge, Intention, And Agency In The Production Of Fermented Beverages, Lorena França
Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America
This article examines the fermentative processes at the core of the agricultural food system of the Upper Rio Negro, northwestern Amazon, highlighting women’s technical and social agency in the production of fermented beverages such as caxiri. Based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted among Baniwa and Tukano families between 2018 and 2019, the study explores how fermentation constitutes not merely a biochemical transformation of matter but a sociotechnical language through which women express intention, alliance, and distinction. The paper analyzes in detail two cases of caxiri preparation, showing how women’s manipulation of manioc, tubers, saliva, and utensils configures embodied knowledge transmitted …
