Can Summer Philosophy Programs Help Close The Achievement Gap?, Bailie Peterson
Can Summer Philosophy Programs Help Close The Achievement Gap?, Bailie Peterson
Philosophy Faculty Publications
While summer break presents educational and recreational opportunities for some students, students from depressed socioeconomic groups may face significant obstacles in the summer, including learning loss. In general, these students also lack access to a wide range of intrinsic and instrumental benefits attached to the study of philosophy. While there are currently existing philosophy programs, this contribution highlights the connections between summer experiences and the overall achievement gap, while identifying specific practices shown to yield successful summer programs. Philosophy provides an impressive set of benefits, including academic skills and opportunities for personal growth and development. Incorporating best practices while focusing …

What Role Should Philosophy Play In The Public Sphere? The Intrinsic Value Of Public Philosophy, Jonathan Engle
What Role Should Philosophy Play In The Public Sphere? The Intrinsic Value Of Public Philosophy, Jonathan Engle
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Public philosophy is a relatively new area of meta-philosophy requiring further development. In this paper I seek to establish a clear definition of public philosophy and clarify what at times has become a muddled term. This is followed by laying a groundwork for how to view philosophical study and its consequences to the students. I primarily address Weinstein’s argument that public philosophy is primarily for entertainment. This is based on one of his points that public philosophy leads to self-knowledge (self-cultivation). Rather than peripheral to public philosophy, I will argue that this is central to public philosophy, establishing it as …
The Unique Demands Of Playing Posture On Youth Violinists And Violists, Liam Carroll
The Unique Demands Of Playing Posture On Youth Violinists And Violists, Liam Carroll
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
The high prevalence of performing arts injuries is an acknowledged challenge facing the performing arts medicine community. The injuries seem to affect string players the most among orchestral musicians, specifically violinists and violists. The asymmetrical posture, head and neck displacement, and spinal displacement required by the posture to play violin and viola can lead to discomfort or injury in the performer. Performance related musculoskeletal disorders (PRMDs) can have an adverse impact on the life of a musician, preventing them from performing or making it uncomfortable. While there is a large body of research on PRMDs relating to adult musicians, there …

De Estatura Regular: Height And Filipino Bodily Representations During The Spanish Colonial Period (1521–1898), Gideon; University Lasco
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
Thisarticle seeks to contribute to the “history of height” in the Philippines by looking at Filipino bodily representations and height differences during the Spanish colonial period. From Pigafetta’s account onward, European chroniclers typically described Indios (natives) as having average, varied, or unremarkable height. However, during the nineteenth century a new discourse emerged: that of a short-statured Filipino. Likely the consequence of actual physical changes and nascent racial ideologies on the part of Spaniards, this view would set the stage for Filipinos to be typologizedas “short”—and for shortness to be problematized as a sign of racial and social inferiority.KEYWORDS: HEIGHT • …

Under The Aegis Of Science: The Philippine Scientific Community Before The Second World War, Jonathan Victor Baldoza
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
Thearticle explores the formation of a prewar community of Filipino scientists nurtured and trained within the scientific order that American scientists installed, developed, and managed in the early part of the twentieth century. It examines vital institutions that shaped and recast the landscape of scientific knowledge production in the Philippines before the Second World War. It explores the ways by which Filipino scientists, endowed with intellectual legitimacy but ambiguously situated in relation to US rule, actively participated in planning for the forthcoming nation, bearing the torch of science as key to the nation’s progress and modernity.KEYWORDS: COLONIAL HISTORY OF SCIENCE …

American Indians residing in the Northern Plains region of the Indian Health Service experience some of the most severe cancer-related health disparities. We investigated ways in which the community climate among an American Indian population in an urban community in the Northern Plains region influences community readiness to address cancer. A Community Readiness Assessment, following the Community Readiness Model, conducted semi-structured interviews with eight educators, eight students, and eight community leaders from the American Indian community in Omaha’s urban American Indian population and established the Northern Plains region community at a low level of readiness to address cancer. Engaging The Poor: Leveraging Local Poverty Assistance Programs To Prepare For Global Engagement, Darren Hercyk
Engaging The Poor: Leveraging Local Poverty Assistance Programs To Prepare For Global Engagement, Darren Hercyk
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
With globalization, there has been an explosion in travel by academic institutions and the church. For the church, this growth has been in short-term mission trips. Unlike traditional missionaries, most short-term travelers are untrained or lightly trained laypersons. The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study was to understand how local poverty assistance programs could be leveraged to prepare the church today for global engagement. This study provided ten church volunteers with training that included a Scripture overview of the poor, the multidimensional factors of poverty, reducing harm in poverty programs, and the skills for affirming dignity during an interview. Following …
Congregational Hymn-Singing At The Weimar Seventh-Day Adventist Church: A Case Study, Erwin Gabriel Nanasi
Congregational Hymn-Singing At The Weimar Seventh-Day Adventist Church: A Case Study, Erwin Gabriel Nanasi
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Throughout the New Testament and the history of the church, congregational hymn-singing has been utilized to edify Christians in worship. Although congregational hymn-singing has been an integral part of Christian worship, many 21st century Christian denominations have departed from this practice. Utilizing contemporary worship music instead of hymns has become the norm. The purpose of this study was to understand the characteristics and benefits of congregational hymn-singing. Using a qualitative case study, this research attempted to determine the efficacy of congregational hymn-singing on perceived theological insight, emotional wellness and group unity at the Weimar Seventh-day Adventist church. The subject church …

Journal of Interpretation
The purpose of this qualitative study was to extend development of the Educational Interpreter Roles and Responsibilities (EIRR) Guiding Checklist, which was designed to assist the Individualized Education Program (IEP) team in determining and documenting individualized roles and responsibilities of the educational interpreter, as appropriate to the needs of the student receiving such services and the qualifications of the interpreter as a related service provider. Literature indicates a long-standing state of confusion regarding the appropriate roles and responsibilities of the educational interpreter, as well as the need for more clear guidelines and procedures. The Checklist was initially designed by a …

Infant Mortality, Access To Primary Health Care And Prospects For Socio-Economic Development In Bwari Area Council Of Niger State, Nigeria, Charles Onuora Okwuwa, Simon M. Adejo
Journal of International Women's Studies
Infant mortality, ineffective ante- and post-maternal healthcare and stagnated development in Nigeria are decades old concerns that need urgent redress. High rates of infant mortality and inability of pregnant women to access healthcare implicate children’s life chances, maternal psychosocial and economic wellbeing, future family welfare, community and national development prospects. Healthcare practices of the present constitutes the foundation for future child, family and overall development. Principally, this empirical research examines Nigeria’s critical dimensions of infant mortality and access to primary health centers (PHCs) as behavioral tendencies capable of shaping the present and future of infancy, childhood, the family and the …
Beyond Feminism: The Egg As A Symbol Of The Brazilian Dictatorship In The Work Of Anna Maria Maiolino, Mónica Lindsay-Pérez
Beyond Feminism: The Egg As A Symbol Of The Brazilian Dictatorship In The Work Of Anna Maria Maiolino, Mónica Lindsay-Pérez
Journal of International Women's Studies
So easy to break and yet impossible to fix, the egg is, in itself, a contradiction: soft but hard; delicate but durable; impermanent but episodic. One of nature’s most interesting creations, it is impossibly bigger on the inside than the outside and has accordingly captivated artists’ minds throughout history. Artists have employed the egg as an allegorical tool for its religious, surrealist, or feminist connotations. Ana Maria Maiolino, a Brazilian artist born in 1942, pushed the egg metaphor beyond its most common iconographic meanings. For the artist, the egg was not simply a religious, philosophical, or feminist symbol, but also …

Early Marriage In Bangladesh: A Cross-Sectional Study Exploring The Associated Factors, Ashis Talukder, Muhammad M. Hasan, Shaharior R. Razu, Zobayer Hossain
Journal of International Women's Studies
This cross-sectional study intends to explore the factors associated with the prevalence of early marriage among female teenagers in Bangladesh. Data from the Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey (BDHS, 2014) were used to meet the study objective. Two binary logistic models were run to estimate the factors that influence early marriage. In Model-I, the covariates were considered in a bivariate setup, and unadjusted odds ratios (UOR) were obtained from Model-II, where all the covariates were taken into account to get the adjusted odds ratio. Results show that the level of education for both females and their partners, religiosity, possession of …

The Psychological Effects Of Starvation In The Holocaust: The Dehumanization And Deterioration Of Its Victims, Kelly Young
The Psychological Effects Of Starvation In The Holocaust: The Dehumanization And Deterioration Of Its Victims, Kelly Young
Augsburg Honors Review
My paper exposes the inherent link between the intense starvation implemented by the Nazi regime in concentration camps during the Holocaust and the psychological state of the victims of the camp system. Explored in this essay are the deteriorative and dehumanizing effects that starvation played on the mind of the camp prisoner. In this paper, I explore the widespread and intense malnutrition among the prisoners that led to cognitive decay such as comprehension complications and loss of concentration. I also examine the cognitive and psychological processes that led to acts of desperation, such as cannibalism, as well as the specifically …
Raw Veganism: The Human Diet, Carlo Alvaro
Raw Veganism: The Human Diet, Carlo Alvaro
Publications and Research
In this chapter, I present some compelling evidence that points to the conclusion that the human species has a specific diet, which is a raw vegan diet of fresh fruit, tender leafy greens, and a moderate amount of nuts and seeds. Out of the hundreds of thousands of species in the world, the only one—ours—cooks food. Not surprisingly, our species is the only one that suffers from numerous maladies. In other words, the argument is that the consumption of cooked food (especially animal-based) is unhealthful and undermines our nature. I present undeniable evidence, from evolutionary science to nutrition science, showing …

The goal of this study is to answer the following questions: How the three core areas of the program are implemented and what activities are offered in the three core areas? How staff members and participant perceive the program and how the program impacts the lives of the participants? After-school programs have become an essential part of impoverished communities over the past three decades. The need of quality after-school programs in disadvantaged neighbourhoods has never been higher. Children residing in …

Doctor of Ministry
More than 45,000 Somali refugees have been resettled in Columbus, Ohio— second in density only to Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota. There is limited research on factors influencing resiliency among this population. This study utilized qualitative research methodology, including stakeholder interviews, stakeholder focus group, and literature review to understand the global, national, and local policies, resources, and cultural attitudes and biases that contribute to Somalian refugees’ struggle with resettlement in Columbus, Ohio.
