Sport In The Middle Of Crisis, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It has been two weeks since the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, an event that has thrown American society into a state of shock and mourning, followed by protest, marches, and rioting. It has been over fifty years since the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the city of Memphis. That event also sent the country into a state of shock and mourning, with protest, marches, and rioting.

“Compassionate Dictatorship”: Leading Old Singers In Community Choirs In Australia, Dawn Joseph Dr, Jane Southcott Dr Jun 2020

“Compassionate Dictatorship”: Leading Old Singers In Community Choirs In Australia, Dawn Joseph Dr, Jane Southcott Dr

The Qualitative Report

In Australia, the ageing population generate challenges, pressures and opportunities for both governmental and community organisations. Involvement in community choirs offers older people diverse benefits that increase with ongoing participation. The music directors/conductors (MD/C) of community choirs are pivotal in the success of ensembles. This paper forms part of our wider study into Well-being and ageing: community, diversity and the arts in Victoria, Australia and addresses the questions, how do music directors/conductors (MD/C) of community choirs understand working with older people? And, how do older choir members understand the role of their MD/C? We interviewed two MD/Cs and thematically analysed …

Phrenology, Physical Anthropology And Ethnology: Nineteenth-Century Race Science And The Foundations Of Eurocentrism, Mckenzie Jayne Leeds Jun 2020

Phrenology, Physical Anthropology And Ethnology: Nineteenth-Century Race Science And The Foundations Of Eurocentrism, Mckenzie Jayne Leeds

History

This paper explores phrenology, physical anthropology, and ethnology--each a nineteenth-century scientific discipline that significantly influenced racial beliefs. These sciences were integral in forming and perpetuating racial hierarchies and the belief of perceived European superiority. The main goal of this project was to deconstruct the European superiority narrative, and to argue that these disciplines created a network of continued racism.

Reclaiming Indiana: The Politics Of Crisis Amid The Failures Of Liberal Capitalist Modernity, Chris Grove Jun 2020

Reclaiming Indiana: The Politics Of Crisis Amid The Failures Of Liberal Capitalist Modernity, Chris Grove

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This ethnography examines grassroots political responses to the economic crisis that began in 2008, foremost in the US Midwest, which arguably laid the groundwork both for the election of President Donald Trump and presidential candidacy of Senator Bernie Sanders. President Obama launched his $787 billion stimulus plan in Elkhart, Indiana, in early 2009. At the height of the crisis, unemployment skyrocketed from four to 20 percent in Elkhart, and it became central to struggles over the political direction of the US. With few safety nets, Elkhart residents struggled to meet their basic needs, creating conditions for political organizing on both …

Indonesian Culinary: Negotiating The Visual And Gustatory Perception, Sonya Indriati Sondakh May 2020

Indonesian Culinary: Negotiating The Visual And Gustatory Perception, Sonya Indriati Sondakh

International Review of Humanities Studies

As it concerns the sense of sight, visual culture puts its focus on everything of visual nature. Specific for food, visual culture has played an important role in the development of culinary culture. Corresponding to the rising of visual turn, visual perception has earned its specific role in culinary scene. Regarding this research, it is of great importance to recognise that food has both the visual and gustatory side. Visual relates to the aesthetic side, which is about its visual appearance and gustatory side is about the taste. In food industry led by the Western world with its famous chefs, …

Argo Navis: A Drifting Circumambulation, Kyle D. Lemstrom May 2020

Argo Navis: A Drifting Circumambulation, Kyle D. Lemstrom

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

This work is a tongue-in-cheek narrative journey through the creative process, using travel and mythology as vehicles for reflection, metacognition, and critical thinking around philosophy, literature, and contemporary art. As a process-oriented piece, it makes use of intentional constraints to force a kind of unfolding, to mimic the act of intellectual discovery, navigating dissonance and doubt. As a creative product, it is something akin to an afterimage, to persist as a vestige of accumulated learning. The piece wrestles with questions of personal agency, authority, knowledge and meaning, yet does not arrive at definitive answers.

Under / Over Looked, Kopal Seth May 2020

Under / Over Looked, Kopal Seth

Masters Theses

Across the stages of migration, I have confronted emotional and social complexities. The farther I am from my roots, the more I want to strengthen my connection to India. Through a process of observation and reflection on every day, grows the desire to house a cultural identity within my work. Here, encounters between past, present and future layer atop history and memories.

To reclaim the kindred character of the craft culture of my country, I rediscover those values that resonate within me through recontextualised forms, clay acts as my drawing tool to outline social structures, psychology, traditions and nostalgia.

Masters Theses

My thesis is an accumulation of many different things. It contains a body of work that consists of furniture, objects, sketches, illustrations, and spontaneous thoughts, as well as improvised writings and images of a variety of things that have largely influenced my own making. For me, design is a discipline that does not come into being through a linear direction. Similarly, I believe that a thesis does not comprise just one single narrative, culminating from one starting point. The process of designing and making is more like the way one prepares a meal - all of the ideas and research …

Re: Ornament, Aleks Dawson May 2020

Re: Ornament, Aleks Dawson

Masters Theses

Re:Ornament calls for a rethinking of ornament within the history and practice of design, urging a broad reconsideration of ornament’s value and a complete reimagining of ornament’s future potential. Charting the arc of ornament in the Western tradition, this thesis reexamines the impact of modernism’s rejection of ornament—and, with it, its embedded culture, history, knowledge and craft.

Studying ornament’s structure as a language, I make the case for ornament’s inherent beauty and excess and speculate on how ornament could apply to thinking and making beyond design. Through graphic form, material exploration and pattern thinking, I …

Repairer's Recipe : Volume 0, Joyce Chang May 2020

Repairer's Recipe : Volume 0, Joyce Chang

Masters Theses

Why?

Technology is accelerating; so is the amount of e-waste. Proliferating new purchases is a shortcut to economic gain, yet proliferation sacrifices social and ecological well being. Activating repair benefits systems— by decelerating the waste stream, and serving as a regenerative module for ethical material collection. Repair literacy encourages an individual’s engagement with materials while challenging corporations to acknowledge repair in the design process. Therefore, electronics users should have the opportunity to learn about repair before the need arises. A sustainable product ecosystem asks for the collaborative effort of public and private sectors and most importantly, the repair practices of …

Beautiful Dirt : Exploring The American Taboo Of Death Through The Things We Leave Behind, Jake Dangstorp May 2020

Beautiful Dirt : Exploring The American Taboo Of Death Through The Things We Leave Behind, Jake Dangstorp

Masters Theses

‘Beautiful Dirt’ is a project meant to help people think about death as a way to learn and grow, rather than a ‘never happening’ taboo. Contemporary research into western dialogues around death show a consistent anxiety towards being forgotten, as well as a fear of being a burden when passing away. The abject nature of the topic leaves people diminishing the weight of the things they leave behind, and the things they forget to. This perpetuates a cycle of denial in order to avoid stress, emburdening loved ones with an unplanned mass of personal items and piecemeal stories to assemble, …

Voran Test Lab : An Exploration Of Teaching Collaborative Problem Solving And Critical Thinking Through Emergent Gameplay, Taber Gifford May 2020

Voran Test Lab : An Exploration Of Teaching Collaborative Problem Solving And Critical Thinking Through Emergent Gameplay, Taber Gifford

Masters Theses

This book explores emergent gameplay as a methodology for teaching collaborative problem solving and critical thinking. These are both key 21st Century Skills and are important in educating and building future professionals and leaders. I explored the precedent analysis of game design in this category before conducting my own design research activities and experiments. Ultimately, my work culminated in the design and development of a game called Voran Test Lab. The game is designed to engage early middle school students and ask them to critically evaluate problems and collaboratively solve them.

The Worst Thing Since Sliced Bread: The Chorleywood Bread Process, Jeremy Cherfas May 2020

The Worst Thing Since Sliced Bread: The Chorleywood Bread Process, Jeremy Cherfas

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

In the 1950s, Britain’s local bakers were under siege. Large, highly automated bread factories could supply bread at a lower price, finding a ready market in the growing supermarket presence on the high street. The small bakers turned to the British Baking Industries Research Association (BBIRA), based in Chorleywood, outside London. After very few years of research, the bread scientists unveiled a method that took less time and was able to use lower-protein home-grown wheat: the Chorleywood Bread Process. If the high street bakers thought they were saved, they were sorely mistaken. The big industrial bakers adopted the same process …

On Wine And Food, Together, Patricia Rogers, Marcella Giannasio May 2020

On Wine And Food, Together, Patricia Rogers, Marcella Giannasio

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

The subject of food and wine pairing in the 21st century is an animated area of discussion. Consider this comment from the University of Arkansas Hospitality Program. ‘The concepts of beverage management or wine evaluation are far from under-utilised in most hospitality programs, but other than in relatively large hospitality programs, food and wine pairing is not provided as a standalone course and is covered at a relatively cursory level in most beverage management’. (Harrington et al, 2010, p.110) It is currently topical that a cultural change in the drinking and eating styles of the millennial and gen. z generations …

Speculative Futures For Mindful Meat Consumption And Production, Alexandra Kenefick May 2020

Speculative Futures For Mindful Meat Consumption And Production, Alexandra Kenefick

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

The stuff of food constantly shifts register between matter and meaning; animal and meat; calories and flavours, stretching and folding the time/spaces of here and now, ‘us’ and ‘them’, producing and consuming in complex and contested ways (Probyn, 1999 in Stassart and Whatmore, 2003, p.450). Meat consumption has entangled our human histories and lived experiences with those of other animals and humans unlike any other food. This co-evolution of experiences finds itself in deeply embedded sociocultural materials such as feasting and fasting rituals, religious dogma, gendered role divisions, ethics discourse, animal domestication, slaughter procedures, and government policies the world over …

Certified B Corps Within The Food Industry And Their Innovative Practices To Improve Environmental And Social Impact, Julie-Anne Finan May 2020

Certified B Corps Within The Food Industry And Their Innovative Practices To Improve Environmental And Social Impact, Julie-Anne Finan

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

: In this paper, I take an introspective look at the B Corp Certification to better understand why so many food companies have engaged with it as a means to improve their positive impact in an age where agricultural practices have a clear link to climate change and increasing social injustices across global food supply chains. The first part of the paper discusses the three stages involved in becoming a Certified B Corp - completing the B Impact Assessment, making a legal change to the company structure to consider all stakeholders and providing full transparency. The second part of the …

Safe, Risk-Free, Standardised Food For All, Is That What We Will Eat Tomorrow?, Penny Wilson May 2020

Safe, Risk-Free, Standardised Food For All, Is That What We Will Eat Tomorrow?, Penny Wilson

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

ur foods today are becoming more and more industrialised, manufactured, globalised; requiring rules and regulations to ensure the safety of those who eat. The rules and regulations are designed to manage the processes of big businesses and corporations that make our food. But these rules and regulations, once in place, come to cover all manner of foods that are local, artisanal and special. Those special, artisanal foods include those with an array of resident microbes creating, arguably, better more complex flavour, foods that might confer good health. But resident microbes are the target of the rules and regulations that ensure …

Ripples From The Columbian Exchange?, Igor Cusack May 2020

Ripples From The Columbian Exchange?, Igor Cusack

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

There is little doubt that the Columbian exchange was one of the greatest disruptions of food production and consumption across the world. The exchange resulted, amongst many other things, in the extensive growing of sugar-cane in the Americas. This encouraged the slave trade, with millions of Africans transported across the Atlantic, while the consumption of the resulting sugar led to the deaths of millions of people. Vast numbers of native Americans died as a result of diseases introduced by the domestic animalowning Europeans. Wheat from the Old World colonised the North American prairies displacing most of the roaming herds of …

What Shall We Cook Tomorrow? Ireland On The Kitchen Front, Marzena Keating May 2020

What Shall We Cook Tomorrow? Ireland On The Kitchen Front, Marzena Keating

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

In February 1941, the Cookery Editor of Model Housekeeping in the article published in Irish Grocer stressed: ‘It is no longer with us womenfolk a question of what we shall have for breakfast, dinner or tea, but what can we get and what can we afford’ (6). Although not directly involved in the Second World War, at the time known in Ireland as the Emergency (1939–1946), the Irish economy was strongly affected. As Ireland was dependent on outside suppliers for certain commodities, including fuel, machinery, fertilisers, ‘the possibility of expending agricultural output was severely constrained’ (Kennedy, Giblin and McHugh, 1989, …

What Shall We Have Today?: Culinary Adaptation In World War I Paris, Kyri W. Claflin May 2020

What Shall We Have Today?: Culinary Adaptation In World War I Paris, Kyri W. Claflin

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

During the First World War, many foods vanished from the markets and shops of Paris. Disruptions along rail lines meant that food shipments from the provinces were often delayed. The continually rising cost of food was a significant hardship. This study of wartime cookbooks examines the kinds of practical knowledge food writers offered Frenchwomen to enable them to shift to a war footing and guide them as they shopped and cooked under these extraordinary conditions. I end the paper with a look at how wartime cooking trends influenced French cuisine in the post-war decade.
