Designing A Health Coach-Augmented Mhealth System For The Secondary Prevention Of Coronary Heart Disease, Avijit Sengupta
Designing A Health Coach-Augmented Mhealth System For The Secondary Prevention Of Coronary Heart Disease, Avijit Sengupta
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation presents research that employs design science research (DSR) methodology to develop and evaluate a high-fidelity prototype of a home-based cardiac rehabilitation (HBCR) system to support self-management of chronic cardiovascular diseases like coronary heart disease (CHD) and to offer secondary prevention against other chronic diseases with similar risk factors. While the population of coronary heart disease (CHD) patients requiring cardiac rehabilitation (CR) continues to expand, lack of access and other barriers to center based cardiac rehabilitation (CBCR) presents a huge challenge. A mobile phone and wearable device based technological system can offer an HBCR program for CHD. By following …
Non-Destructive Trace Element Analysis Of Burials From Moho Cay, Belize, April Alyce Walton
Non-Destructive Trace Element Analysis Of Burials From Moho Cay, Belize, April Alyce Walton
LSU Master's Theses
The study of skeletal material macroscopically and microscopically can yield a plethora of information about interments’ lives. Studying bones at an elemental level can provide further details regarding dietary habits, residency, and migration patterns, which are important areas of research for Maya archaeology. Currently, research on bone composition is conducted through destructive methods, especially for archaeological bone. The use of non-destructive methods for testing bone composition such as with a portable x-ray fluorescence machine can also be suitable for the study of archaeological bone. This study has two main goals: to understand the interments' lives through strontium trace element and …

Journal of International Women's Studies
Puberty and menstruation bring major physical and mental changes in a girl’s life; they mark the beginning of procreation. In many countries lackof knowledge and poor hygienic practices during menstruation lead to serious illness ranging from genital tract infections and urinary tract infections to bad odor. This study on Knowledge Attitude and Practice (KAP) aims to understand the awareness level of menstrual health and hygiene among adolescent girls, and the study also focuses on identifying the average age of attaining menarche among early adolescent girls and the problems associated with menstruation. To meet the above objective, a sample of 187 …

Literacy And Livelihood Of Women Migrant Construction Workers: An Analytical Study, Manjunath S., Shashi Kumar M., Minu A.
Journal of International Women's Studies
Migration is a demographic process that has been chronicled across world history. Even though various reasons have accelerated this process over the years, the dominant trend in internal migration during the 20th century has been the movement from rural to urban areas. The casual and unskilled workers who shift from one region to another, offering their services on a temporary or seasonal basis are considered migrant labourers. The 21st century has witnessed problems related to migration intensifying. Migrant labourers face hostility from local populations posing a great challenge for governments to maintain the welfare of these people. Unfavorable social, economic, …

Study On The Prevalence Of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Among Women Population Of Bangalore, India, Sangeetha Menon, Shweta Sharma, Manikandan Kathirvel
Journal of International Women's Studies
India has observed the most devastating increase in cases of diabetes today—especially Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The high prevalence of diabetes mellitus is due to rapid urbanization of the suburban regions. Diabetes mellitus continues to increase as a result of rapid cultural and social changes, such as increasing urbanization, ageing populations, dietary changes, reduced physical activity, and unhealthy behavior. Development and maintenance of healthy lifestyle behaviors can be the most effective strategy in reducing complications and premature death among women living with T2DM. There is currently insufficient information available on the prevalence of T2DM and associated factors in the …
Brain Fog Among Perimenopausal Women: A Comparative Study, S. Shrividya, Molly Joy
Brain Fog Among Perimenopausal Women: A Comparative Study, S. Shrividya, Molly Joy
Journal of International Women's Studies
Menarche is the beginning of a girl's ability to ovulate and reproduce. Visible menopause symptoms are absent with little hormonal changes during pre-menopause. Perimenopause is the transitional period which is a slow process from normal to no menstrual periods at all, which often takes up to 10 years. In menopause, ovarian development of estrogen decreases significantly, and this results in painful effects such as hot flashes, nausea, exhaustion, etc. Another common symptom is brain fog: a mostly temporary state of diminished mental capacity marked by an inability to concentrate or to think or reason. The study intends to analyze brain …
Methodological Journey: Lessons Learned From A Student-Led Intercultural Pilot Study, Ryan James Price, Rebecca Walton, Matthew Petersen
Methodological Journey: Lessons Learned From A Student-Led Intercultural Pilot Study, Ryan James Price, Rebecca Walton, Matthew Petersen
Journal of Rhetoric, Professional Communication, and Globalization
New technical communication scholars face the challenge of developing cultural competence in order to effectively and appropriately carry out intercultural research. With interculturally competent technical communicators in increasingly high demand, instructors wrestle with the challenge of preparing students for cross-cultural work environments (Melton, 2011; Smith & Mikelonis, 2011; St.Amant, 2011). The field has adopted a wide variety of globalization-driven, culture-conscious educational practices over the past few decades, but a knowledge gap still persists regarding how to equip new scholars with training and tools that are necessary for building cultural competence, particularly as it relates to designing and conducting research. In …

Incorporating Digital Health Literacy Into Adult Esl Education On The Us-Mexico Border, Erika Mein, Brenda Fuentes, Francisco Soto Más, Andrés Muro
Journal of Rhetoric, Professional Communication, and Globalization
The increasing digitization of information and communication has undoubtedly impacted the ways in which people in the United States access and interpret health information. Although the traditional emphasis of health literacy research has been the comprehension of health-related texts such as patient information forms, prescriptions, and medicine labels, the increased use of electronic means to locate health information requires more critical engagement with texts beyond basic comprehension. In accessing electronic health information, patients need to be able to navigate the vast amount of online health information and to interpret and synthesize health information across multiple sources (i.e. websites) while also …

Journal of Rhetoric, Professional Communication, and Globalization
Understanding and improving health literacy have become important goals in health communication. Research has shown that limited health literacy is associated with poor health outcomes and that it is more prevalent in culturally and linguistically diverse populations. The goals of this study are to describe English-speaking (ES) and Spanish-speaking (SS) diabetic patients’ perceptions of sources of health information, to identify the actions patients report taking in seeking that information, and to test reading comprehension of medical information among SS patients.
Data for this study were based on semi-structured interviews, life-story narratives, and a reading comprehension test with diabetic patients (43 …
Translating Health Care: Stories From Refugees, Providers, And Friends, Kevin Brooks, Miriam Mara
Translating Health Care: Stories From Refugees, Providers, And Friends, Kevin Brooks, Miriam Mara
Journal of Rhetoric, Professional Communication, and Globalization
Drawing on interviews and participatory observation, this article weaves stories of translating healthcare told from the perspectives of refugees, health care providers, and friends. The research finds that while literal translations of documents and information are important to the health care process for refugees of New Americans, cultural translations of concepts like health care and preventive care are perhaps even more important. That translation, however, is not simple or literal either; refugees and New Americans may resist, or remain suspicious of, these concepts even once understood. Friends of refugees can provide an important role in helping with cultural and institutional …

The Early Medieval Transition: Diet Reconstruction, Mobility, And Culture Contact In The Ravenna Countryside, Northern Italy, Anastasia Temkina
The Early Medieval Transition: Diet Reconstruction, Mobility, And Culture Contact In The Ravenna Countryside, Northern Italy, Anastasia Temkina
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This research project evaluates the effects of increased mobility and culture contact on dietary practices, and on dietary variation among people buried at two northern Italian sites, Chiunsano di Ficarolo and Chiesazza di Ficarolo, located near the ancient Roman capital of Ravenna and dating 4th to 7th century CE. The Early Medieval period was a time of change, political instability, migration and invasion of the “barbarian” tribes, and diet was not unaffected. In particular, it is hypothesized that a new staple crop, millet, was introduced and that meat consumption had increased. The goal of this research is to use stable …
All The King’S Horses: Stable Administration In New Kingdom Egypt, Tessa Genevieve David Litecky
All The King’S Horses: Stable Administration In New Kingdom Egypt, Tessa Genevieve David Litecky
Theses and Dissertations
Horses were an important part of Egyptian society during the New Kingdom as tools of warfare, status symbols of the elite, and an emblem of the power of kingship. However, little is known about how these animals were trained and cared for, or who was working in horse stables and their roles. There are no texts or images that explicitly explain methods of horse management. Therefore, this topic has been generally overlooked in the literature. This thesis combines two threads of evidence to create a more complete picture of the organization, purpose, and function of horse stables and the treatment …
Women’S Social Empowerment And Microfinance: A Brief Review Of Literature, Ambreen Khursheed, Ather Azim Khan, Faisal Mustafa
Women’S Social Empowerment And Microfinance: A Brief Review Of Literature, Ambreen Khursheed, Ather Azim Khan, Faisal Mustafa
Journal of International Women's Studies
Women’s empowerment is essential for socio-economic development as it is considered as one of the major factors for increasing worldwide development efforts. The influence of microfinance on women's empowerment is a debatable topic, as past studies have documented. Some researchers claim that microfinance facilitates women to increase their earning capacity, leading to greater control to tackle cultural irregularities. Others contend that their spouses mostly control micro-loans provided to women, causing severe demotion of women. In this paper, we examined the findings of past studies through word cloud analysis to determine the influence of microfinance on the decision-making power of women …

The Factors Involved In The Exit From Sex Trafficking: A Review, Chiara Ferrari
Journal of International Women's Studies
Sexual trafficking and exploitation are a worldwide phenomenon affecting a huge number of women. Many studies have examined the process of sex trafficking entering, but less have analyzed the exit process. The aim of this review is to provide an overview of factors that intervene on the sex trafficking exit, starting from the most common theoretical models in literature. We used the Sociological Abstract and Scopus database to identify articles; further relevant studies have been identified with the snowballing method. We focused on empirical studies, the exit factors, and studies based on victims’ point of view. There was no limitation …

Women’S Attitudes Towards Wife Beating And Its Connection With Intimate Partner Violence (Ipv): An Empirical Analysis Of A National Demographic And Health Survey Conducted In Pakistan, Muhammad Saud, Asia Ashfaq, Siti Mas'udah
Journal of International Women's Studies
Wife beating, a form of intimate partner violence that is used as a tool to correct wives’ behavior, is not acceptable in most parts of the world. Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is a global health problem and is far more than a dilemma; it is a systemic form of abuse that is the third major cause of death around the world. Despite it being unacceptable in most parts of the world, in its different forms, wife beating is still a commonly practiced pattern of behavior that pervades all societies, patriarchal ones in particular. This is a problem in the patriarchal …
Unfold The Body, Fan Su
Unfold The Body, Fan Su
Masters Theses
I was born into a physical body of flesh and bone, so I thought that I was one with it. As a carrier of my mind and soul, I believed that it was singular to me; that I had full ownership of it. So, why was I refusing womanhood? Was this devaluation of women a legacy? Was this a legacy unique to Chinese women?
As a woman born and raised in a metropolitan center in China, I proceeded through childhood and adolescence questioning my power as a woman. Feminine maturity and the societal pressure to follow the expectation of being …
Balancing The Tangible And Intangible, Shiqi Wu
Balancing The Tangible And Intangible, Shiqi Wu
Masters Theses
I love reading stories, but until now, I had never written my own. Balancing the Tangible & Intangible is organized around my experiences and stories, which are inseparable from my work. Together they constellate a narrative of remembrance. Memories surface, and so do connections, allowing for assurance and conviction during a time of personal flux and global unsettledness. As a choreographer and composer of relationships between the tangible and intangible, I rebuild networks of connections linking memories of my relationship to China, my home country, to my experience of living in the West.
In today's global society, population migration is …

The Planetary Garden, Permaculture Ethics, And Frameworks Of Care: Reclaiming Value Of Care, Care Work And Nature Through Youth Education Programming, Charlotte Borland
The Planetary Garden, Permaculture Ethics, And Frameworks Of Care: Reclaiming Value Of Care, Care Work And Nature Through Youth Education Programming, Charlotte Borland
Student Research
In issues of food pathways, social justice, and sustainable practices, permaculture ethics and care ethics provide unique models for improvising solutions. First, permaculture ethics is comprised of three fundamental maxims: (1) care for Earth, (2) care for people, and (3) fair share. These principles inform permaculture practices but also have the possibility to inform cultural frameworks and economic practices. For example, by prioritizing the value and practice of “fair share”—taking only what an individual needs—warns against the consequences of overconsumption. Regarding maxims of care for Earth and people, such principles provide a framework to reclaim the value of care and …

Lead Pastor Support In Balancing Marriage, Family, And Ministry As It Related To Stress And Depression, Yolanda K. Mcbride
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The role of a pastor encompasses many duties and responsibilities within the church as well as in the home. In particular, associate pastors are akin to lead pastors in dealing with issues that arise in their personal marriages, family, and ministry. Balancing the three can be daunting and arduous tasks without proper guidance and leadership. Lead pastors have a responsibility to assist associate pastors in balancing those three areas of concern to ensure the ability to serve in ministry with a strong state of mind necessary for a full and thriving career in leading others to Christ. Without the assistance …
A Method For The Evaluation Of Song Texts In Evangelical Churches: A Crucial First Step In Developing Indigenous Songs, Kristi Jeanne Colas
A Method For The Evaluation Of Song Texts In Evangelical Churches: A Crucial First Step In Developing Indigenous Songs, Kristi Jeanne Colas
Masters Theses
How important are song texts in worship services? According to the Bible, these songs have a multi-faceted role. Not only do they contain truths about God’s revelation of himself in Scripture, but they also call his people to respond with their whole being. The same song can express worship to God, teach believers truths about him, and challenge unbelievers to turn from their false gods. Therefore, the lyrical content of Christian congregational songs is of utmost importance. However, a survey of ethnodoxological literature reveals a greater focus on songs’ musical content. One reason for this may be the general emphasis …

Pharmacy Faculty Scholarship
Solanum jamesii is a wild potato found in the US southwest. There is ample evidence that this potato was used by ancestral Puebloans as a food source, where some researchers think it was used as a starvation food while others consider it to be regular food source. Currently this potato is being grown by Native Americans, notably the Navajo, as a specialty food as well as a food crop. There are several attributes to this potato that make it especially suitable for development as our climate changes and food needs become more demanding, including its drought tolerance and ability to …
