Philosophical Commitment As Artistic Expression, Robert K. Mcmaster Oct 1974

Philosophical Commitment As Artistic Expression, Robert K. Mcmaster

University of Dayton Review

Editor's note: This paper was read at the fourth annual University of Dayton Philosophy Colloquium, held in 1974.

In this paper I will deal with and try to give acceptable answers to three basic questions that deal with the topic of philosophical commitment. The questions and the order in which they will be dealt with are:

  • What is philosophical commitment?
  • How does philosophical commitment develop?
  • What is the best way to describe, talk about, or understand this commitment?

Ought Cats Be Tuesday? Reflections On The Neutrality Of Philosophers, Xavier Monasterio Oct 1974

Ought Cats Be Tuesday? Reflections On The Neutrality Of Philosophers, Xavier Monasterio

University of Dayton Review

Editor's note: This paper was read at the fourth annual University of Dayton Philosophy Colloquium, held in 1974.

Should walls be brown. or white? The question is ridiculous because, as it stands, it is unanswerable. Why should walls be brown rather than white, or white rather than brown? On what basis can we decide that one color is more fitted than another for walls? In order for the question to become truly intelligible and answerable, its context needs to be specified. Tell me whether you are talking about the walls of a house or the walls of an industrial plant, …

The Philosopher's Character And Praxis, Martin A. Bertman Oct 1974

The Philosopher's Character And Praxis, Martin A. Bertman

University of Dayton Review

Editor's note: This paper was read at the fourth annual University of Dayton Philosophy Colloquium, held in 1974.

Not inappropriately, as an invitation to conversation, the title of this colloquium — “The Philosopher: Neutral or Committed?" — is ambiguous and provocative. For one, the word “neutral” opposes “committed,” thereby suggesting the conflation of the meanings of “neutral” and “uncommitted,” as  the latter is the formal opposite of committed.

To understand the meaning of “uncommitted” as positive hostility and abnegation of political action, however, would bring forward few advocates: Diogenes or Sinope, Schopenhauer, and Nietzsche come to mind.

The Transcendental Phenomenologist: Neutral Or Committed?, Raymond J. Devettere Oct 1974

The Transcendental Phenomenologist: Neutral Or Committed?, Raymond J. Devettere

University of Dayton Review

Editor's note: This paper was read at the fourth annual University of Dayton Philosophy Colloquium, held in 1974.

From the very beginning Western philosophy has been marked by an almost constant longing for radical knowledge, indubitable truth, apodictic evidence, the ultimate ground. Edmund Husserl’s transcendental phenomenology continues this philosophical passion and advances it along the lines first opened up by Descartes. The Cartesian doubt was a philosophical method designed to achieve an absolutely certain point of departure for philosophy by applying a merciless skepticism to all our experiences which could in any way be questioned. Two important insights emerge here: …

ทางเชื่อมระหว่างภาษาไทยกับภาษาอังกฤษ (Building Bridges Between Thai And English), Thomas Scovel, Aim-On Truwichien Oct 1974

ทางเชื่อมระหว่างภาษาไทยกับภาษาอังกฤษ (Building Bridges Between Thai And English), Thomas Scovel, Aim-On Truwichien

PASAA

Chance similar and systematic similarities between Thai and English are illustrated and discussed at serveral levels of linguistic analysis. The argument is made that a comparative analysis, one which high-lights the systematic similarities underlysing the two languages is as important in second language pedagogy as the more commonly found contrastive analysis.

Intention And Interpretation In Art: A Semiotic Analysis, Gary Shapiro Oct 1974

Intention And Interpretation In Art: A Semiotic Analysis, Gary Shapiro

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Kant was perhaps the first philosopher to note the distinctive puzzle, verging on paradox, which marks our dealings with art. Works of art seem to place us under an obligation to interpret them and yet we are convinced that our interpretations will never be exhaustive. Kant attempts to account for this peculiar phenomenon by talking of "purposiveness without purpose" or of the aesthetic idea as "a representation of the imagination to which no concept is adequate." We are constrained to see some pattern or organization in a work of art and this is typically understood as a teleological or purposive …

The Historical Imagination Of Francesco Petrarch: A Study Of Poetic Truth And Historical Distortion, Sally Scholz Aug 1974

The Historical Imagination Of Francesco Petrarch: A Study Of Poetic Truth And Historical Distortion, Sally Scholz

Dissertations and Theses

In the continuing debate among historians over the nature, if not the actual existence, of the Italian Renaissance, the life of Francesco Petrarch has played a major role. Petrarch was an outspoken critic and commentator on the state of fourteenth-century society. His opinions have been cited by all scholars interested in the origins of the "Renaissance Mind."

The concern of this paper will be to discuss the sources, development, and purpose of Petrarch's historical imagination. By tracing the course of Petrarch's life I have tried to expose the various factors bearing on his psychological development. His "exile" from Italy, early …

The Effects Of A Short Term Preacademic Total Approach Program On The Language Development Of Disadvantaged Children, Doug Richter Aug 1974

The Effects Of A Short Term Preacademic Total Approach Program On The Language Development Of Disadvantaged Children, Doug Richter

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This research tests a short term total academic language development program on the development of language delayed children. It was hypothesized that an increase in vocabulary and response length after a six week treatment program would be reflected on the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test and the Mean Length of Response Test. The treatment program utilized both the group and tutorial approach emphasizing the basic skills associated with listening, language, reading, writing and arithmetic. The subjects were nine-preschool Head Start children participating in a summer program at Western Kentucky University. A comparison of the performance on pre and post test revealed …

The Society For The Propagation Of The Gospel In Foreign Parts And The Assimilation Of Foreign Protestants In British North America, Anne Polk Diffendal Aug 1974

The Society For The Propagation Of The Gospel In Foreign Parts And The Assimilation Of Foreign Protestants In British North America, Anne Polk Diffendal

Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts from its foundation in 1701 to the beginning of the American Revolution attempted to minister to non-English white settlers in the North American colonies. The Society sent clergymen to Dutch, to Germans, to Swedes, and to French Huguenots in various provinces, gave financial help to foreign ministers, and distributed books to foreign churches. Anglican religious services were open to foreigners living near the Society's missions. These activities have been chronicled in 1952 in a dissertation by William A. Bultmann, who published two articles from that paper. One is a …

Chicanos In Oregon: An Historical Overview, Richard Wayne Slatta Jul 1974

Chicanos In Oregon: An Historical Overview, Richard Wayne Slatta

Dissertations and Theses

Spaniards were the first Europeans to explore the Pacific Northwest coastline, but the only evidence of these early visits is a sprinkling of Spanish place names commemorating the intrepid voyagers. The more than four centuries of recorded history since that time are nearly devoid, of references to Spanish-speaking people, especially Mexicans and Americans of Mexican descent (Chicanos). Even the heavy influx of Chicano migrant farm workers in the 1950's and 1960's failed to attract the attention of historians or social science researchers. By 1970, the Spanish-language population had become Oregon's largest ethnic minority and was exerting influence in most areas …

Browning's Uses Of Humor., Paul Edward Coggins Jul 1974

Browning's Uses Of Humor., Paul Edward Coggins

English Language and Literature ETDs

Five of the major theories which attempt to explain laughter are those of superiority, contrast, release, enlightenment, and instinct. One seldom finds a single theory that will satisfactorily explain all of our reasons for laughing in response to a particular work. More often than not, a combination of appeals will be found necessary to take into account the complexity of what occurs between impetus and reaction. The overall aim in tracing out some of these major theories of humor and in trying to "place" Browning in relationship to them is to verify the contention that uses of humor, at practically …

The Emergence Of An Acoustical Art Form: An Analysis Of The German Experimental Horspiel Of The 1960s, Mark Ensign Cory Jun 1974

The Emergence Of An Acoustical Art Form: An Analysis Of The German Experimental Horspiel Of The 1960s, Mark Ensign Cory

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

The Era of the Traditional Horspiel has passed. Although they have an important and welcome place in the repertory of every German broadcaster, the radio plays of Gunter Eich, the lyrical fantasies of Ingeborg Bachmann, the suspenseful stories of Friedrich Durrenmatt, the interior monologues of Heinrich Boll, Dieter Wellershoff, and Peter Hirche no longer influence the creative energies at work in the genre as they did throughout the 1950s. They are in a sense museum pieces to which the term "classic" has already been widely applied. What has followed the mature classic period possesses the vigor of youth and the …

A Pastoral Response To The Charismatic Movement, Jack Schneider May 1974

A Pastoral Response To The Charismatic Movement, Jack Schneider

Master of Divinity Thesis

In the material recorded in Paul's First Epistle to the Corinthian congregation, the reader comes into contact with what Paul refers to as charismata, or spiritual gifts. Chapter 14 of this Epistle concentrates on two of these charismata, namely speaking in tongues and prophecy. Both are "utterance gifts", and from Paul's treatment of them, it seems that there is a definite link between them. Since we are currently experiencing an increasing element of "charismatic renewal" within our own denomination, and do not seem able to deal pastorally with it, it will be my purpose in this brief section to delve …

An Investigation Into The Relationship Between Figurative Language And Biblical Typology, Thomas Mohr May 1974

An Investigation Into The Relationship Between Figurative Language And Biblical Typology, Thomas Mohr

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Excerpt: "Because of those who have taken an extreme position concerning typology, the subject has been either distorted or discarded. In both cases it has been very unfortunate. If it can be established that typology is a valid tool to use in studying the Bible, then "a great door and effectual is opened" to the Bible student . The problem is, has been, and always will be : " there are many adversaries ." The preliminary assumption of the writer was that typology is not unscriptual or dangerous ; rather the misuser of typology is the one that needs to …

The Concept Of Cross-Cultural Identification, Daniel Roy Brewster May 1974

The Concept Of Cross-Cultural Identification, Daniel Roy Brewster

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The Apostle Paul was perhaps the greatest missionary who ever lived, and perhaps the greatest teacher, aside from our Lord, of the necessity and the means of identifying oneself to the needs of the Diverse peoples of the non-Christian world in order that he might effectively communicate the "Good News" of God's redemption plan. In his first letter to the fledgling church at Corinth, he succinctly and accurately states what is at once the primary manner, the primary goal and the primary obstacle to that identification. "... I have become all things to all men that I may by all …
