Moore's Paradox: One Or Two?, John N. Williams Jun 1979

Moore's Paradox: One Or Two?, John N. Williams

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Discussions of what is sometimes called 'Moore's paradox' are often vitiated by a failure to notice that there are two paradoxes; not merely one in two sets of linguistic clothing. The two paradoxes are absurd, but in different ways, and accordingly require different explanations.

Early Pioneer Families In Decatur County, Kansas, Lillian Shimmick

Fort Hays Studies Series

This account of some of the early pioneer families in Decatur County, Kansas and of their material and cultural contributions toward the development of a vigorous and distinctive community is derived from a series of newspaper articles written between 1966 and 1975 by Lillian Shimmick. Liberation, Eschatology And Politics In Latin American Liberation Theology, H. Dennis Campbell May 1979

Liberation, Eschatology And Politics In Latin American Liberation Theology, H. Dennis Campbell

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

One readily observable fact about theology is its multiplicity of branches. It is a field of study that embraces a wide variety of interpretations and schools of thought. This diversity has emerged as a result of different emphases in interpretations, variety in education, sociocultural backgrounds, and differing objectives behind the formulation of theological thought. It is readily reflected at the practical level by the numerous denominations within Christendom, each possessing its own theological distinctives. Diversity also manifests~. itself at the academic level in the numerous choices of courses available to the student desirous of studying theology. It would almost appear …

Contextual Factors In Church Growth In Malawi, Philip L. Capp May 1979

Contextual Factors In Church Growth In Malawi, Philip L. Capp

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The general purpose of this study has been to select and present contextual factors from the past and present in Malawi that provide insights into the process of the growth of the Church in Malawi and in particular the growth of the Free Methodist Church. The study is done with the understanding that it is preliminary to a field study which will provide the basis for decision making by both the Church and Mission.

Past contextual factors discussed are the geographical setting, the acculturating agents and effects of acculturation with emphasis on the four major intrusions of the 19th century, and …

Figures Of Speech In Galatians, Jay Currie May 1979

Figures Of Speech In Galatians, Jay Currie

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The scope of this thesis will be limited to figures of words or expressions as defined by Terry and Robertson.17 We purposely omit so-called figures of thought (for example, allegory, simile, parallel) since these figures are usually covered adequately in many commentaries and because their inclusion would make this thesis needlessly lengthy.

Contemporary Claims In Linguistic Philosophy, Charles W. Mcgarry May 1979

Contemporary Claims In Linguistic Philosophy, Charles W. Mcgarry

Undergraduate Honors Theses

It seems to be one of the characteristic features of philosophy that any and all claims made within the subject are open to dispute. The empirical sciences also contain claims which are only contingently true about the world, but, in contrast to philosophy, they have universally recognized and accepted procedures for deciding which theories to accept. Many philosophers have found this very appealing, and the history of philosophy shows that time and time again there have been attempts to change philosophy into a science. More often than not these attempts manifest themselves in the introduction of a new method, which …

A Conflict Of Cultures: Alsace-Lorraine, 1871-1918, Karen Lynn Eiler Apr 1979

A Conflict Of Cultures: Alsace-Lorraine, 1871-1918, Karen Lynn Eiler

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

A traveler viewing Alsace today for the first time would never suspect the difficult and stormy past which has plagued this beautiful little country. The fertile plains, the vineyards, and the Vosges mountains on the French side of the Rhine are mirrored on the German side of the valley, extending to the mountains of the Black Forest. The cultures of these two great civilizations, too, mingle here, enrich and reflect each other. Language is a perfect example of this junction of cultures. Most inhabitants are at least bilingual, speaking both the local dialect, which is of Germanic origin, and either …

Interview With Cynthia Plair Roddey - Oh 62, Cynthia Plair Roddey, Integration

Winthrop University Oral History Program

This interview, conducted on January 22, 1979, by Cynthia Wilson for The Johnsonian, the student newspaper of Winthrop University, documents the experiences of Cynthia Plair Roddey, the first African American student admitted to Winthrop College following desegregation.

Roddey reflects on her decision to attend Winthrop in 1964, citing convenience, family responsibilities, and access to graduate coursework in library science as primary motivations. She recounts her arrival on campus, her desire to minimize attention and avoid publicity, and the precautions taken by college officials and local authorities to ensure her safety. She also describes the strong support she received from …

Crossroad Of Empire: The Church And State On The Rio Grande Frontier Of Coahuila And Texas 1700-1821, Felix D. Almaraz Jr. Jan 1979

Crossroad Of Empire: The Church And State On The Rio Grande Frontier Of Coahuila And Texas 1700-1821, Felix D. Almaraz Jr.

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

The monograph being published here is the first in a series of data-oriented reports derived from the archaeological and ethnohistorical project centered on the modern town of Guerrero, Coahuila, Mexico. To our gratification, the project produced a great deal of information. We have decided to meet the problem of adequate publication of the results in two ways. The first is by a volume of essays which aim at synthesizing the various aspects of the data and drawing conclusions from it. This single volume will be published elsewhere and is now (1979) in preparation. The other means of publication is by …

Ethnohistoric Notes On Indian Groups Associated With Three Spanish Missions At Guerrero, Coahuila, T. N. Campbell Jan 1979

Ethnohistoric Notes On Indian Groups Associated With Three Spanish Missions At Guerrero, Coahuila, T. N. Campbell

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Three Spantsh missions, San Francisco Solano, San Juan Bautista and San Bernardo, were established near the Rio Grande at present Guerrero, northeastern Coahuila, during the years 1700-1703. Remnants of at least 88 distinctively named Indian groups at various times came to live at one or more of these missions. In 1975- 1976, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas San Antonio, supported by funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Kathryn O'Connor Foundation, conducted archaeological excavations at two of these missions, San Juan Bautista and San Bernardo. Since the cultural debris recovered from excavations is …
