Excavations At Sites 41lk31/32 And 41lk202 In The Choke Canyon Reservoir, South Texas, Robert F. Scott Iv, Daniel E. Fox

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Site 41 LK 31/32 is located in Live Oak County, southern Texas on a wide horseshoe bend of the Frio River, approximately 16 km west of the Frio's confluence with the Nueces River. Construction of the Choke Canyon Reservoir by the Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) had necessitated an excavation program at the site prior to destruction. Investigations conducted by the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, were carried out in two stages, culminating in a major excavation during the summer of 1978. An indication of the depth and significance of cultural deposits at the site …

Sikaiana Traditional Songs

These are transcriptions of several tani or funeral dirges. Tani are composed after a person dies. I do not have a record of who gave me the transcriptions, most likely John Kilatu and/or Reuben Tenai. I do not have recordings for these songs.

The Elizabethan Clerk Of The Privy Council, F. J. Platt Jan 1982

The Elizabethan Clerk Of The Privy Council, F. J. Platt

Quidditas

One of the least understood facts of Elizabethan administrative history is the importance of the clerkship of the Privy Council. Considered a position of "no small esteem," this "office was singularly rich in men of distinction." Indeed, with the exception of a select few privy councilors, it was the Council clerks who handled the lion's share of the day-to-day business of English government.

Book Review Of "The Question Of Animal Awareness" And "Animals Are Equal", W. C. Mcgrew Jan 1982

Book Review Of "The Question Of Animal Awareness" And "Animals Are Equal", W. C. Mcgrew

International Journal for the Study of Animal Problems

McGrew reviews two books addressing what lies behind the behavior of nonhuman species. Griffin's book caused considerable discussion when it first appeared five years earlier. The book has become the cornerstone of a new discipline – cognitive ethology. Three new chapters (on mental experiences, semantics, and evolutionary continuity) have been added to the original eight in the first edition. Almost a third of the cited studies have appeared since the first edition's publication, illustrating the unexpected richness of the new findings. Griffin emphasizes that animal communication is the richest source of material, leading to inferences about animal minds. Griffin is …

A questionnaire was prepared with seventeen recommended titles and fifteen presently criticized titles on which media specialists in AEA 7 were to indicate availability in their media centers. The hypothesis to be tested was: Given a list of books containing both reconnnended and presently criticized titles, 75 percent of school library specialists in AEA 7 will indicate that there are more recommended titles than presently criticized titles on Native Americans in their fiction …

Will Henry / Clay Fisher, Robert L. Gale Jan 1982

Will Henry / Clay Fisher, Robert L. Gale

Western Writers Series Digital Editions

Henry Wilson Allen is a controversial and exciting Western author. He is also perhaps the most underrated, persistently overlooked of the major writers of the American West. He has used two pen names —"Clay Fisher" and "Will Henry" —and his own name in two forms (Henry Wilson Allen and Henry W. Allen) to sign a total of more than fifty books, almost all of them novels, from 1950 to the present.

(1982) Nobody Can Teach Anyone Anything (1971) By Wilfred Rusk Wees, Philip C. Guin

Collected Papers of Philip C. Guin

In this review, Guin concurs with Wees that, instead of survival schooling the whole purpose of education is to nurture the child's power of thought, since thought is the basic resource in the child's search for purposes and meanings.

Writing The South-West Language, Wilfrid Douglas Jan 1982

Writing The South-West Language, Wilfrid Douglas

Research outputs pre 2011

This book was intended primarily for South-west Aboriginal adults who were asking for help in writing their own language.

For a period, many of the South-west people were ashamed to speak their own language in front of "Wetjalas" (i.e. European Australians). A number of factors have changed this attitude so that, to-day, most of the people have become rightly proud of their old culture and language and many are attempting to salvage what they can of the South-west traditions.

Origin Of The Term 'Shyster', Gerald Leonard Cohen Jan 1982

Origin Of The Term 'Shyster', Gerald Leonard Cohen

Arts, Languages and Philosophy Faculty Research & Creative Works

Shyster has been one of the most difficult items for etymologists of English, but a Rosetta Stone to its origin exists: the previously overlooked 1843-1844 material in a New York City newspaper. This material contains an all-important conversation on shyster at the moment of its inception and permits the unearthing of the detailed story behind this term; very briefly, shyster arose as part of the editor's crusade against legal and political corruption in NYC and the attempts of the authorities to silence him. The present monograph discusses the earlier unsuccessful attempts to find the term's etymology and then sets forth …

Cernuda Y Los Romanticos Ingleses, Carlos-Peregrin Otero
