Job's Encounters With The Adversary, Ken Frieden Jan 1985

Job's Encounters With The Adversary, Ken Frieden

Religion - All Scholarship

Although Job has been universally admired, his encounters with evil have met with diverse and often contradictory interpretations. In contrast to the tradition that exalts "patient Job," recent scholars have focused attention on the
"impatient Job" who questions divine justice. I will suggest that
Job is essentially a book about questions and assertions, a book
that leads us to consider the significance of theological questioning.

Sense And Sensibility, Lawrence Kimmel Jan 1985

Sense And Sensibility, Lawrence Kimmel

Philosophy Faculty Research

It is no secret that philosophy has gone out of the marketplace, nor has it shown up recently in the councils of kings. There seems some justified confusion, if not complaint, among an intelligent and educated public that philosophy has become a private matter among academic professionals. Even then, it often seems to reduce to linguistic scepticism or solipsism. This confusion is also felt among some philosophers. It is tied up somehow with both the conviction and disappointment that the domain of philosophy is neither the world nor the mind -- that philosophy is indeed, as an academic majority contend, …

Little-Dog-Of-Iron, Philip St. Clair Jan 1985

Little-Dog-Of-Iron, Philip St. Clair

Ahsahta Press

An especially apt title for St. Clair’s 1985 collection of poems, Little-Dog-of-Iron has thrived during its sixteen years in print. The poems follow the trickster Coyote as St. Clair creates him in both modern and ancient myth, with occasional historical interludes based on fact, in which “Coyote Addresses His Brothers the Wolves and the Foxes.” St. Clair, like Coyote, mixes the horrific with the humorous unpredictably, for as Howard McCord writes in his introduction to the poems, “laughter and tears are brothers.” A somber “Coyote with the Shadow People” therefore finds itself with “Coyote Horny” and “Coyote in Law School.” …

History, Action And Identity In "Upon Appleton House": Andrew Marvell And The New Historicism, Theodore Chen Jan 1985

History, Action And Identity In "Upon Appleton House": Andrew Marvell And The New Historicism, Theodore Chen

Honors Papers

The present study on Marvell's "Upon Appleton House" has its genesis in an earlier explication of the 'Horatian Ode,' I was then fascinated by Marvell's isolation of the individual within the larger picture of the historical process and planned, when the opportunity arose, to explore this concern within the context of seventeenth-century historiography and political theory. Although the topic was solid enough on a practical level, it proved difficult to treat both individual texts and subjects as only products of their times on a theoretical level. My reservations were due not so much to any growing allegiance to a formalist …

(1985) Philosophy For Children: An Important Curriculum Innovation, Laurance J. Splitter Jan 1985

(1985) Philosophy For Children: An Important Curriculum Innovation, Laurance J. Splitter

Collected Papers of Laurance J. Splitter

Young children possess attributes which deserve to be called philosophical. These may be separated into two broad clusters: a structural or methodological component and a substantive component. These components provide the basis of a curriculum and teaching methodology which addresses some key educational objectives. Philosophy for Children is a program which utilizes and expands upon the capacity for reflection and inquiry which all children possess by creating, in the classroom, a community of inquiry. This is achieved with the help of three resources: (a) a philosophical novel, (b) an accompanying manual for teachers, (c) a teacher who is both philosophically …

From The Sublime To The Political: Some Historical Notes, Gary Shapiro Jan 1985

From The Sublime To The Political: Some Historical Notes, Gary Shapiro

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Let me document my suggestion that modernist poetics tends to give a privileged position to what has traditionally been known as the sublime by adducing two examples from rather disparate traditions. Martin Heidegger's ontological poetics can reasonably be viewed as a renewal of the aesthetics of the sublime -- although Heidegger never uses the term sublime, so far as I know -- and is explicitly hostile to the limitations of aesthetics, conceived as an autonomous study of a certain kind of experience. Harold Bloom does recur to the Romantic terminology of sublimity in his attempt to construct a poetics which …

Language Attrition In French-Speaking Missionaries, Peggy S. Mauerman Jan 1985

Language Attrition In French-Speaking Missionaries, Peggy S. Mauerman

Theses and Dissertations

Patterns of language loss were analyzed in twenty-five returned French-speaking missionaries who had spent from one-and-a-half to two years in a French-speaking environment and who had returned to the United States from four months to five years ago. The subjects were given a written vocabulary test and an oral interview to determine their proficiency in the language. The results of this study showed that the patterns or change in particular language forms varied according to each language form. Some categories showed an obvious pattern of loss while some varied from year to year, with no pattern of any kind in …

The Effects Of Language Processing Strategies Upon Reading Comprehension, Kathy Ann Kirby

Masters Theses

In 1975, the Education for All Handicapped Children Act was passed providing educational services for children with exceptionalities. Learning disabilities was one of those exceptionalities whose definition used a language disorder as its major criteria for the identification and classification of a specific learning disabilities. The inclusion of language disorders within its definition brought about greater interest in language and the understanding of language development, acquisition and processing and how these aspects related with academic learning, particularly with reading.

The purpose of this study was to address the issue of language processing strategies in the remediating of language deficits and …

The Academic Achievement Of Chinese-American Fluent English Proficient And Non-Minority Background Intermediate Grade Students (Bilingual, Asian-American), Edmund W. Lee

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

More than a decade has passed since the United States Supreme Court made its historic decision in Lau v. Nichols on January 21, 1974. Ruling in favor of the non-English-speaking Chinese plaintiffs, the Court upheld earlier guidelines established by the office for Civil Rights for school districts with more than five percent national origin-minority group children. In delivering the Court's opinion, Justice Douglas reiterated these words of J. Stanley Pottinger, former director of OCR:

Perception Of English/Spanish Vot By Monolingual English Speakers: A Dichotic Study, Cynthia Flesher Barrios Jan 1985

Perception Of English/Spanish Vot By Monolingual English Speakers: A Dichotic Study, Cynthia Flesher Barrios

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Dichotic listening tasks have been used extensively to establish the left cerebral hemisphere as dominant for linguistic processing. Dichotic stress has also been used to investigate lateralization patterns for individuals who speak more than one language and if those patterns differ from those found in monolingual speakers. Most investigations of this nature, with both monolingual and bilingual subjects, have found a right ear advantage (REA) for linguistic processing. Voice onset time (VOT) is the acoustic parameter primarily responsible for the categorical discrimination of stop consonants in a number of different languages, including English and Spansih [sic]. It has been found …

Audience Preference For Metaphoric Concept In Broadcast Language, Denis Martin Bramblette Jan 1985

Audience Preference For Metaphoric Concept In Broadcast Language, Denis Martin Bramblette

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

A recent communication theory premise that individuals tend to arrange their thinking metaphorically is the focus of this study. Some communication scholars posit that humans actually think in metaphors. That is, individuals understand something by using one thing to stand for another. Humans communicate by comparing things they understand. Thus, we as humans actually arrange our thinking metaphorically and we understand things or interpret symbols by processing information through a system of metaphoric concepts.

This study attempts to extend metaphoric concept communication theory by examining the broadcast news segment of mass media. This study's general hypothesis is that if individuals …

Substances, Accidents, And Kinds: Some Remarks On Aristotle's Theory Of Predication, Frank A. Lewis Dec 1984

Substances, Accidents, And Kinds: Some Remarks On Aristotle's Theory Of Predication, Frank A. Lewis

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

A major feature of Aristotle's strategy against Plato in the Categories is to collapse the dichotomy that Plato's theory of (metaphysical) predication attempts to make between forms and sensibles. In Aristotle's theory, Socrates IS some of his predicables, but HAS others. He IS what is essential to him, and HAS the rest. These different relations between Socrates and his various predicables form a large part of the motivation for the further ontological distinctions that Aristotle draws in the Categories.
