Archiver Le Théâtre Algérien : Itinéraire D’Un Chercheur, Ahmed Cheniki Oct 2026

Archiver Le Théâtre Algérien : Itinéraire D’Un Chercheur, Ahmed Cheniki

Regards

Undertaking research on theatre in Algeria, the Arab world or sub-Saharan Africa is by no means an easy task; it is closer to an obstacle course. It is far from the simple "intellectual adventure" it is so often imagined to be. It is a gruelling experience, patiently built up over time: the outcome of a long and delicate process, a lengthy journey made up of rewarding moments, to be sure, and genuine discoveries, but also of trial and error, self-questioning, refusals, closed doors and, at times, decisive encounters.

Palestinian Theatre Studies: The Emergence Of A Field, Noor Shihadeh

Regards

This article analyses the emergence of Palestinian theatre studies, a field of research bound to the modern history of Palestine and to the settler colonial violence that marks it. This violence strikes people, their cultural production and the very possibility of preserving it, shaping in turn how scholarship circulates and where it can be conducted. Studies on Palestinian theatre have nonetheless appeared since the 1960s. The article examines them through a multilingual literature review (Arabic, English, French, Italian, Hebrew) and identifies three main lines of research: a historical-documentary approach, a socio-political and anthropological approach, and a body of studies devoted …

Héritages, Mémoires Et Transmissions Dans « Augures (LaʿAllā Wa ʿAsā) » De Chrystèle Khodr, Najla Nakhlé-Cerruti

Regards

This article examines how Augures (Laʿallā wa ʿasā), a play created by Chrystèle Khodr in 2021 in Beirut and then presented in France, constructs an alternative historiography of the Lebanese civil war through theatre and its history. While the history of theatrical practice during this period remains largely unwritten in Lebanese historiography, the play draws on the intertwined memories of two iconic actresses, Hanane Hajj Ali and Randa Asmar had never converged before this production. Drawing on textual analysis, observation of the performance, and secondary sources, the article shows how Augures turns the stage into a space where history is …

This article examines the link between the archives of the independent theatre movement in Egypt and the movement’s difficult journey towards structuring itself, from its formation in the late 1980s to the present day. For the artists involved in this movement, who create outside the structures and funding of official institutions, the archives represent a major challenge in political, economic and aesthetic terms.

نقد معاوية نور لمسرح أحمد شوقي (1929-1932): قراءة في أرشيف مجهول, Essam Abu Elgasim Abdel Wahid

Regards

Critiques of Ahmad Shawqi’s drama formed a prominent feature of the Sudanese critic Muawiya Muhammad Nur’s theatrical scholarship. Among the six articles he dedicated to analyzing theatrical works, Nur authored three pivotal essays on Shawqi’s theater published during the "Prince of Poets" life- time. The significance of these articles today lies in the fact that they remained "unknown" and absent from foundational references, leading to the omission of Nur’s contributions from studies documenting Arabic theatrical criticism in the pre-Mohamed Mandour era. This study serves as a call to re-read the history of Arabic theatrical criticism through a more precise and …

Introduction, Marianne Noujaim, Ons Trabelsi

Paradoxes Of Customary Land Formalization: A Comparative Study Of Papua New Guinea And Indonesia From A Political Anthropology Perspective, Adi Prasetijo Oct 2026

Paradoxes Of Customary Land Formalization: A Comparative Study Of Papua New Guinea And Indonesia From A Political Anthropology Perspective, Adi Prasetijo

Antropologi Indonesia

This article studies the dynamics of customary land ownership in Papua New Guinea (PNG), where approximately 97 percent of land is collectively held by clans. Drawing on insights from political anthropology—particularly normative pluralism (Griffiths, 1986; von Benda-Beckmann, 2006), Polanyi's double movement (Filer, 2014), along with cosmological perspectives on land and identity (Weiner & Glaskin, 2007; Ingold, 2021), it analyzes how government efforts to formalize customary land through the Land Act 1996 and the Incorporated Land Groups (ILG) Act 2009 generate three principal paradoxes: (1) protection versus exclusion, (2) recognition versus commodification, and (3) negotiation versus rigidity. The study blends an …

Konstruksi Identitas Nasional Melalui Bahasa Visual Animasi Dalam Trailer Film Merah Putih: One For All, Deva Alviana, A. Syaifuddin Rohman

Journal of Language, Literature, and Arts

This study aims to analyze the application of the 12 principles of animation, the construction of national identity, and audience interpretations of the animated film trailer Merah Putih: One for All. A qualitative approach was employed through scene-by-scene audiovisual analysis of the 2-minute, 2-second trailer published on the YouTube channel @perfikitv and reception analysis of 15 comments purposively selected from X. The analytical framework combines Thomas and Johnston’s 12 principles of animation with Stuart Hall’s encoding/decoding theory. The evaluation indicates that one principle was applied effectively, two were partially applied, four were inadequately applied, and five were not adequately …

Presupposition As A Pragmatic Phenomenon In Daily Communication: A Literature Review, Uhood Abdul Razzaq Sliah

Journal of Language, Literature, and Arts

Presupposition has traditionally been examined as a semantic phenomenon, although its functions in everyday communication extend beyond truth-conditional meaning. This study aims to examine presupposition as a pragmatic phenomenon, particularly how speakers use implicit assumptions to manage information, influence interpretation, and negotiate common ground. Using a literature review approach with qualitative thematic synthesis, the study examines 13 studies published between 2011 and 2026, identified through academic literature searches involving Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar. The analysis identifies four major themes: the development of semantic and pragmatic theories, the rhetorical functions of presupposition in political and media discourse, the …

Epic Heroism For The Ordinary: Tolkien’S Reworking Of Odyssean Heroism In The Hobbit, Jon Billsberry Oct 2026

Epic Heroism For The Ordinary: Tolkien’S Reworking Of Odyssean Heroism In The Hobbit, Jon Billsberry

Journal of Tolkien Research

This article explores The Hobbit as a narrative of two Odyssean homecomings: Thorin’s return to Erebor and Bilbo’s return to Bag End. Thorin undertakes the more direct nostos: as a displaced royal heir, he returns to recover his ancestral household, inheritance, authority, and public identity. Bilbo, by contrast, leaves a secure home and gradually acquires the cunning, adaptability, judgement, and independence that make Thorin’s return possible. Tolkien thus separates heroic position from heroic conduct. This separation produces conflict at Erebor, where Thorin’s defence of royal possession threatens violence and Bilbo uses the Arkenstone to challenge the king he helped …

Localising Norms Of Moderate Islam: Lessons From Nahdlatul Ulama In Hong Kong And The United Kingdom, Rumadi Ahmad, Idris Masudi, Muh Afit Khomsani

Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional

This article examines how Nahdlatul Ulama localises moderate Islamic values abroad through its special branches (Pengurus Cabang Istimewa, PCI) in Hong Kong and the United Kingdom. Drawing on Acharya’s theory of norm localisation, it asks how PCI NU in each setting frames the Aswaja values of tasamuh (tolerance), tawassuth (moderation), and tawazun (balance), and how these values condition and account for the differences. The study uses a qualitative comparative design based on in-depth interviews with PCI NU leaders and a literature study. In Hong Kong, where members are mostly Indonesian migrant workers in a semi-authoritarian setting, the organisation operates …

Character-Value Internalization Through Tembe Nggoli Motifs And Weaving Practices In The Mbojo Weaving Community Of Wawo District, Indonesia, Imamatul Islamyah, Meisar Ashari, Irsan Kadir

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya

Traditional weaving constitutes an important part of Indonesia's cultural heritage, yet its role in character-value learning remains underexplored. This study examines how character values are interpreted, experienced, and reinforced through Tembe Nggoli motifs and weaving practices within the Mbojo weaving community of Wawo District, Indonesia. Using a qualitative mini-ethnographic design, data were collected from four participants through semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and documentation and analyzed using Braun and Clarke's six-phase thematic analysis. The findings indicate that character-related values are encountered through three interrelated dimensions: visual symbolism, embodied weaving practices, and community participation. Within the observed setting, participants associated these dimensions …

The Life Of A Showgirl As A Cultural Artifact: What's Hidden By The Lipstick And Lace?, Crystal F. Haryanto Oct 2026

The Life Of A Showgirl As A Cultural Artifact: What's Hidden By The Lipstick And Lace?, Crystal F. Haryanto

Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy

This paper develops a collage-based framework to holistically assess Taylor Swift’s highly anticipated first release after the Eras Tour concluded. The Life of a Showgirl, with sparkling promotional materials leading up to its October 2025 drop and polarizing critical reception following it, represents an entertainer’s lifestyle while still concealing what was alluded to behind the Eras Tour curtain. Rather than engage in a direct response to Showgirl, I critically evaluate positive and negative commentary from listeners regarding the album, and I thematically analyze lyrical concepts throughout Swift’s discography to contextualize Showgirl within the arc of her work. I …

Carrying Memory, Building Capital: Black Family Child Care Educators’ Community Mothering And Educational Equity, Ashley R. Watts, Crystasany R. Turner Oct 2026

Carrying Memory, Building Capital: Black Family Child Care Educators’ Community Mothering And Educational Equity, Ashley R. Watts, Crystasany R. Turner

Occasional Paper Series

This narrative unfolds not only as research but as living archives of Black family child care educators’ daily acts of care, resistance, and cultural preservation. Each image and story becomes a window into the layered identities of FCCEs—community mothers, pedagogues, and cultural stewards—whose homes and classrooms are sites of both survival and joy. The photographs capture the textures of their caregiving environments: the toys worn smooth by generations of children, the kitchen tables transformed into learning hubs, the walls adorned with cultural symbols and affirmations. These visual and narrative fragments remind us that FCCEs are not simply providers; they are …

(Re)Membering The Work Of Septima Clark Amid The Gift Of Chaos, Terrance J. Lewis, Alex Chisholm, Kristen E. Duncan

Occasional Paper Series

The current state of American society and the future of its democracy have caused many Americans to develop feelings of hopelessness, especially pertaining to education. In the spirit of Sankofa and using Dillard’s (2021) Spirit of Our Work, we (re)member the work of Septima Clark to seek what can be learned and applied during this period of societal unease and educational uncertainty. By (re)membering Septima Clark, we provide recommendations for thought practice that formal K-12 and community educators might consider as we navigate educational spaces amid an open and direct period of intellectual warfare.

Freedom Is Taught Here: Freedom Schools And The Radical Tradition Of Intergenerational Community Learning In Black Education, Trayc D. Freeman, Wintre F. Johnson, Tiffany D. Meadows, Christine Onyinyechi-Uju Emuka, Naila A. Smith

Occasional Paper Series

The Black American community has always understood the power of literacy and education, and the importance of Black self-sufficiency to attain these. The establishment of Freedom Schools during the 1964 Freedom Summer in Mississippi is an actualization of that understanding. Since 1995, the Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) has carried on the work and legacy, with Freedom Schools still taking place all over the United States. For two summers, we, researchers from the University of Virginia, have had the opportunity to partner with a CDF Freedom School as part of a mixed-method research study. This essay serves as a reflection and …

Sanctuaries Of Resistance: The Prophetic Black Church As Fugitive Education, Charles E. Becknell Jr. Oct 2026

Sanctuaries Of Resistance: The Prophetic Black Church As Fugitive Education, Charles E. Becknell Jr.

Occasional Paper Series

This paper examines the Prophetic Black Church as a living site of education within the ongoing struggle against historical erasure. It shows how sermons, testimonies, and rituals function as teaching practices that preserve cultural memory and build critical awareness. Using pastoral autoethnography, the study interprets everyday acts of worship and community life as forms of learning that join faith with freedom. Through a narrative case study and theological reflection, the paper highlights how grandmothers, elders, and youth act as “freedom teachers,” sustaining Black learning amid surveillance and exclusion. Drawing on endarkened feminist praxis and fugitive pedagogy, the analysis reimagines the …

From Linguistic Domination To Counter-Power: The Weaponisation And Reappropriation Of Language In Shakespeare's Drama, Md. Abu Bakkar Oct 2026

From Linguistic Domination To Counter-Power: The Weaponisation And Reappropriation Of Language In Shakespeare's Drama, Md. Abu Bakkar

Journal of Language, Literature, and Arts

Studies of language and power in Shakespeare usually treat colonial, psychological, political, and familial domination as separate problems belonging to separate plays. This article asks what happens when the target of linguistic domination takes up, repeats, or withholds the discourse through which domination is exercised. It proposes linguistic counter-power as a comparative analytical concept: a change in who can define, command, or be believed within the dramatic world that outlasts and exceeds the speaker’s own act of resistance. The concept is distinguished from discursive resistance, linguistic agency, counter-discourse, and resignification, and is operationalised through three tests: uptake, durability, and structural …

Hots Based Innovative Assessment Of Listening Skills In The 2020 Arabic Textbook For Grade X Madrasah Aliyah, Yanda Rismawati, R Umi Baroroh

Al-Arabi: Journal of Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language

This study analyzes the distribution of cognitive levels in listening (istima’) questions and identifies which language skill demonstrates the least integration of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). Employing a qualitative content analysis approach within a library research design, the primary data source is the 2020 Arabic Language Textbook for Grade X published by the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs (KEMENAG). Secondary data include theoretical and empirical literature on HOTS-based assessment and Arabic language pedagogy. The findings indicate that listening (istima’) is the skill with the lowest representation of HOTS-oriented items. Out of 79 questions examined, most fall into the LOTS …
