Halide Edib:Turkish Nationalism And The Formation Of The Republic, Ansev Demirhan Jul 2012

Halide Edib:Turkish Nationalism And The Formation Of The Republic, Ansev Demirhan

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Halide Edib positioned herself as a main agent and figure of the Turkish nationalist movement, as both visionary and defender of her nation. Contributing to the evolving discourse on what it meant to be Turkish; Edib placed the family at the center of the state and identified women as state-builders. Through her interpretation of Turkish nationalism, I argue that Edib obscured the division between the public and private realm and classified women as agents in the creation of the Republic. I further contend that by doing this she contributed to the legitimization of Turkey on an international scale. This thesis …

Business Management And Ethics: An Islamic Approach, M. M. Maishanu, Ahmad Maigari Dutsin-Ma Jul 2012

Business Management And Ethics: An Islamic Approach, M. M. Maishanu, Ahmad Maigari Dutsin-Ma

Business Review

This paper explores the relationships between business management and ethics in Islam. The paper’s central theme is that business management is not separate from ethics; the latter reinforces the former. In Islam, mundane and spiritual pursuits are complementary as such mundane activities are not left to chance but guided by sharia to enhance the chances of spiritual salvation. To establish this, the paper largely relies on the Holy Quran and Hadith and other complementary sources of data. Istikhlaf (vicegerency), Tauhid (Oneness and Uniqueness of Allah) and ukhuwah (Brotherhood) are regarded as the main guiding concepts or precepts behind activities which …

Unveiling The Veil Ban Dilemma: Turkey And Beyond, Adriana Piatti-Crocker, Laman Tasch Jul 2012

Unveiling The Veil Ban Dilemma: Turkey And Beyond, Adriana Piatti-Crocker, Laman Tasch

Journal of International Women's Studies

This article examines Turkey’s veil ban policy, which has been in place since the 1980s. The dilemma is whether Muslim-veil bans impinge on the rights of expression and religion at both national and international levels or, whether states may legally justify a ban on the basis of secularism and women’s rights. Even though the idea of freedom “from religion” in Turkey has been closely linked to the European notion of secularism during most of Turkey’s republican history, more recently, secularism and veil bans in Turkey and in the West have been construed quite distinctly. This shows an increasing gap between …

Ibn Khaldun And The Modern Social Sciences: A Comparative Theoretical Inquiry Into Society, The State, And Revolution, Douglas H. Garrison Jun 2012

Ibn Khaldun And The Modern Social Sciences: A Comparative Theoretical Inquiry Into Society, The State, And Revolution, Douglas H. Garrison

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis represents a link in a long chain of recent Western scholarship that has attempted to bring the work of Ibn Khaldun, the late 14th century Tunisian jurist and historian, into the mainstream of historiographic, political, and sociological learning. Why Ibn Khaldun? What makes his work stand out among the classics of pre-modern and early-modern political and social theory? Why are his ideas still relevant to the study of politics and societies today? My thesis attempts to answer these questions through the lenses of comparative political theory and theoretical reinterpretation.

The study hinges on a thematic comparison of Ibn …

Going International: The Development And Operations Of Al Qaãida In The Islamic Maghreb, Sarah Faye Mangrem May 2012

Going International: The Development And Operations Of Al Qaãida In The Islamic Maghreb, Sarah Faye Mangrem

Theses and Dissertations

Since 2006 there has been a uniquely independent and autonomous branch of al Qa’ida operating in the Sahel and Sahara region of North and West Africa. Relative to associated movements elsewhere, al Qa’ida in the Islamic Maghreb is geographically and financially isolated, dependent on its own members to mobilize both human and financial resources. Yet at this they have been particularly successful; smuggling contraband across African borders, kidnapping Europeans for ransom and playing middleman for Latin American cartels transporting huge amounts of drugs to Europe. The 2012 Tuareg rebellion and subsequent military coup in Mali has provided opportune timing as …

The Discourse Of Friday Sermon In Surakarta; A Socio-Pragmatic Study, Kundharu Saddhono

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This research aims to explain the Friday sermon by analysing the structure of its discourse, the selection and composition of its topics, the form and functions of its codes and code switching, the form of its speech acts, and the characteristics of its language and specific terms. The method used is descriptive and qualitative. This research considers the speech components of the sermon and approaches it contextually. The analysis of the speech acts is based on Kreidler's theory (1998), while that of the characteristics of the language is based on the Dell Hymes's theory. The data were collected in Surakarta …

Negotiating Islam With Cinema; A Theoretical Discussion On Indonesian Islamic Films, Ahmad Nuril Huda Apr 2012

Negotiating Islam With Cinema; A Theoretical Discussion On Indonesian Islamic Films, Ahmad Nuril Huda

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This paper aims at exploring certain negotiations that justify Muslim's cinematic texts and practices. It focuses on the questions about what is Islamic and un-Islamic about film, who and what decides certain films as Islamic, and what are the meanings of cinematic practices of Islam for Muslim society. Furthermore, this paper tries to investigate these questions from a theoretical basis using concepts of Islamic modernity, Islamic Ummah and Public, in order to shed some light on the idea of how a production of an Islamic film may trigger the creation of a political and religious identity.

American Jihad: Understanding The Social Backlash Against Muslim Americans Through The Context Of Ethnotheatre, Sameehan Patel Apr 2012

American Jihad: Understanding The Social Backlash Against Muslim Americans Through The Context Of Ethnotheatre, Sameehan Patel

Honors Projects

I am a brown person. The color of my skin dictates much of how American society has and will interact with me. Whether it is to my advantage or my disadvantage, the cultural fabric of America will isolate who I am because of the color that I am. American culture has racial assumptions embedded within its grain, lending to the alienation and eventual discrimination of certain races. The idea of a marginalized race is no foreign concept in the Anglo American hegemony, but the ever morphing idea of the “other” is my point of inquiry. On September 11th 2001, …

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Girls and Women in Kilifi District, Kenya are some of the world’s poorest and most disadvantaged people. Low retention rates in school, early and unintended pregnancies, and vulnerability to HIV/AIDS trap them in a cycle of intense poverty. Moving the Goalpost (MTG) in Kilifi uses football to empower girls and young women, helping them to fulfill their potential by engaging them in sport and educational development projects. This report analyzes the goals, challenges, and successes of MTG through understanding its organization capacity, and offers recommendations for improvement.

Symbols Of Religious Identity In Jordanian Society, Piotr Narel Apr 2012

Symbols Of Religious Identity In Jordanian Society, Piotr Narel

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Upon noticing a trend of religious symbolism within Jordan, I began wondering as to why it was so common. Knowing that the majority of Jordan adhered to Sunni Islam, I was surprised that many Jordanians felt that it was necessary to indicate their religion through objects that identify to which religion an individual adhered.

I developed the hypothesis that the uses of religious symbolism within the country are due not to inherently religious reasons, but that they do serve individuals in other ways. The aim of my research was to discover what the reasons for this use of religious symbolism …

The Decagonal Tomb Tower At Maragha And Its Architectural Context: Lines Of Mathematical Thought, Carol Bier Jan 2012

The Decagonal Tomb Tower At Maragha And Its Architectural Context: Lines Of Mathematical Thought, Carol Bier

Textile Research Works

Of several brick tomb towers constructed at Maragha in western Iran before the Mongol conquests, one in particular, Gonbad-e Qabud (593 H. / 1196-97 C.E.), has generated significant recent attention for its unique patterns with pentagons and decagons. Gonbad-e Qabud is also unusual in having a decagonal plan. While both plan and decoration distinguish it from earlier and later towers at Maragha and elsewhere on the Iranian plateau, the ornamental patterns follow a long line of experimentation with geometric expressions that grace many pre-Mongol buildings in Iran. This article examines in particular the overlapping polygons and radial symmetries of the …

The Development Of Political Secularism In A Nascent State, Tabassum Farooqui Jan 2012

The Development Of Political Secularism In A Nascent State, Tabassum Farooqui

Theses Digitization Project

This study will explore the rise, fall and revival of political secularism in Bangladesh. The exclusion or inclusion of political secularism is a controversial issue in many nascent states, because political groups often use religion as a political tool to manipulate the masses. In some newly-independent states, religious sentiment of citizens may be manipulated by different regimes; yet, the unique style of adopting religion may or may not increase religious tolerance in government.

Charity In Defending The Kingdom, Daniel C. Peterson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

On Maintaining Fairness and Charity

With one striking exception, leaders and members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are, and al ways have been, flawed people. (No better quality of human is available.) “We have this treasure in earthen vessels,” the apos tle Paul said, referring to the gospel and its mortal ministers, “that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us” (2 Corinthians 4:7).

Volume 4: Cosmopolitanisms In Muslim Contexts : Perspectives From The Past, Derryl N. Maclean, Sikeena Karmali Ahmed Jan 2012

Volume 4: Cosmopolitanisms In Muslim Contexts : Perspectives From The Past, Derryl N. Maclean, Sikeena Karmali Ahmed

Exploring Muslim Contexts

Cosmopolitanism is a key concept in social and political thought, standing in opposition to closed human group ideologies such as tribalism, nationalism and fundamentalism. Much recent discussion of this concept has been situated within Western self-perceptions, with little inclusion of information from Muslim contexts.

This volume redresses the balance by focusing attention on instances in world history when cosmopolitan ideas and actions pervaded specific Muslim societies and cultures, exploring the tensions between regional cultures, isolated enclaves and modern nation-states. Models are chosen from four geographic areas: The Swahili coast, the Ottoman empire/Turkey, Iran and Indo-Pakistan.

Interpretations Of Law And Ethics In Muslim Contexts, Aptin Khanbaghi Jan 2012

Interpretations Of Law And Ethics In Muslim Contexts, Aptin Khanbaghi

Muslim Civilisations Abstracts

Law within Muslim societies is not uniform; even within Muslim majority regions it can be interpreted differently according to different denominations and legal traditions. As law forms an integral part of normative social practice, reflecting the moral and ethical principles of a society, it is important to highlight the diversity of interpretations to better enable the study of law along with the ethical principles of a community.

Volume 2 of the MCA series brings together some of the many unheard voices of scholars studying law and ethics in languages other than English. It features 200 abstracts with bibliographical details in …

Diversity Within Islam: Its Intersections With Muslim Immigrant Identities, Esther Smidt

Languages & Cultures Faculty Publications

This article investigates the multiple identities of four Muslim immigrant students, the intersections of these identities, and the students’ understandings of the systems of oppression examined in the multicultural developmental ESL writing course they attended as college freshmen. The research question is “What are Muslim immigrant students’ understandings of their own identities in terms of race, class, and gender as seen through the lens of their religious identity while taking a multicultural college writing class focusing on race, class, and gender?” The four participants of this qualitative multiple case study were chosen on the basis of religion, race, and gender. …

Schooling, Community, And Identity: The Perspectives Of Muslim Girls Attending An Islamic School In Florida, Vanessa Martinez Jan 2012

Schooling, Community, And Identity: The Perspectives Of Muslim Girls Attending An Islamic School In Florida, Vanessa Martinez

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As the number of Islamic institutions increases in America, the need for greater understanding of the Muslim community, and the challenges faced by this minority, increases as well. This project seeks to provide such knowledge by exploring one of these rapidly growing institutions founded and funded by Muslims, private Islamic schools. Absent from media and literature is an understanding of Islamic schools and the experiences of youth as their attendees. This project addresses this gap through an ethnographic focus on female students at one Islamic school. Data was collected via interviews, focus groups, observation, and participant observation. This student-centered approach …

What The Religions Named In The Qur'an Can Tell Us About The Earliest Understanding Of "Islam", Micah B.D.C. Naziri Jan 2012

What The Religions Named In The Qur'an Can Tell Us About The Earliest Understanding Of "Islam", Micah B.D.C. Naziri

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Both Western studies of Islam as well as Muslim beliefs assert that the Islamic holy text, the Qur'an, endeavored to inaugurate a new religion, separate and distinct from the Jewish and Christian religions. This study, however, demonstrates that the Qur'an affirms a continuity of beliefs with the earlier revealed texts that suggest that the revelations collected in the Qur'an did not intend to define a distinct and separate religion. By studying the various historical groups named in the Qur'ān-such as the Yahud, Sabi'un, and Nasara-we argue that the use of the term "islam" in the Qur'an relates more to the …
