The Forerunners Of The Protestant Reformation, Suresh Heraman May 1977

The Forerunners Of The Protestant Reformation, Suresh Heraman

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Excerpt: "This research paper is a study based mainly on the forerunners of the Protestant Reformation in Western Europe from 910 to 1498 A.D. Some consideration is given to the earlier history of the Church, to show the cause for the reforms to follow.

Sources used for the research of this paper are listed in the bibliography. Since this research is historical it has relied on the works of others who have written on the history of the Christian Church. No effort is made to give a history of theology but to discover why the reforms were needed."

A Collection Of Italian Opera Libretti In The Syracuse University Libraries, Aubrey S. Garlington Jr.

The Courier

In this article, Aubrey S. Garlington, Jr. explains the historical tension between the composer of the opera and its librettist, arguing that although the adulation of the composer has steadily risen in modern history, there cannot be an opera without a libretto. He also notes that 18th and early 19th century libretti are becoming more important in musicology, and analyzes a collection of Italian libretti that can be found at Syracuse University's Bird Library.

The Sound Of Fame: Syracuse University's Audio Archive And Edison Re-Recording Laboratory, Frank S. Macomber

The Courier

At first glance the Syracuse University Audio Archive and Edison Rerecording Laboratory looks like an antique shop. Old phonographs, cylinders, posters of a by-gone era are everywhere; there is even a relief of the Victor dog. But there are great differences in action and atmosphere from an antique shop, for at the Archive the "relics" are living machines, and the ancient cylinders are taking on a modern, full-toned life. Here, modern techniques of cleaning, reprocessing and re-recording are giving new sounds for old. Here, the staff is finding ways for the sounds of the past to function as realities in …

Hermeneutics Of Experimental Science In The Context Of The Life-World, Patrick A. Heelan Jan 1977

Hermeneutics Of Experimental Science In The Context Of The Life-World, Patrick A. Heelan

Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections

Science is distinguished as an element of our total contemporary culture, or “historical science,” from science as the professional business of natural scientists, or “experimental science.” Phenomenology has always taken a very critical stance against certain defects or biases -- objectivism, scientism, technicism -- it has found in historical science. It is my purpose to show that these defects and biases, associated historically with physical science, are not necessary parts of physical science, and consequently, that physics, especially experimental physics, has all of those hermeneutical, ontological, historical and dialectical dimensions negated by historical science. The notion of dialectic is given …

Recent Parallels Between The Philosophy Of Science And Mathematics, Joseph Spradley Jan 1977

Recent Parallels Between The Philosophy Of Science And Mathematics, Joseph Spradley

ACMS Journal 2004

Following World War I European philosophy of science formed an alliance with mathematics culminating in an attitude of certainty and autonomy that rejected all non empirical claims to truth and purported to make all science presupposition less. The rise and fall of logical positivism has been one of the major themes of of twentieth century thought and illustrates the danger of placing too much emphasis on science and mathematics as an ideal for all knowledge. The restriction of rational inquiry to the modes of scientific verification and the processes of mathematical logic was far too confining for the containment of …

Albert Bandura And Ellen G. White: A Comparative Study Of Their Concepts Of Behavior Modification Through Modeling, Miriam S. Tumangday Jan 1977

Albert Bandura And Ellen G. White: A Comparative Study Of Their Concepts Of Behavior Modification Through Modeling, Miriam S. Tumangday

Dissertations

Problem. One of the major concerns in education today is the improvement of behavior. Over the years various strategies have been proposed to modify human conduct. A careful review of these theories shows many similarities and divergences. Albert Bandura and Ellen G. White, two proponents from different eras and with widely disparate cultural and intellectual heritage, have strongly recommended modeling or example as the major factor in shaping human behavior. The present study sought to determine what, if any, similarities or differences exist in their modeling concepts.

Procedure. This investigation is a descriptive analytical study concerned with concepts …

Women Historians And Women's History: An Organizational Guide, Arnita Jones Jan 1977

Women Historians And Women's History: An Organizational Guide, Arnita Jones

Women's Studies Quarterly

Since the late 1960s an interlocking network of new national, regional and local organizations has furthered the interests of women historians . From the beginning, however, the developing field of women's history has also been a primary concern. The enthusiasm of women historians for women's history has its parallel within other academic disciplines, but the current redefinition of historical inquiry to include such new areas as psycho-history, family history and the history of childhood has provided an unusual opportunity. Perhaps for this reason, perhaps out of frustration about the issue of employment, the history of women has become the major …

The Politics Of John Muir, Dorothy M. Freeman Jan 1977

The Politics Of John Muir, Dorothy M. Freeman

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

A man does not always see himself as others see him. John Muir is venerated by several generations of Americans as a man who left a legacy of State and National Parks, State and National Forests, outdoor beauty and untouched wilderness areas which would never have survived has it not been for this dedicated man.

He did not plan such a course. He did what he found necessary to be done, without thought of personal gain or public honor.

However, during his lifetime there were those who did not view him with such veneration. Countless ranchers, lumberman and politicians must …

The Concept Of Character Development In The Writings Of Ellen G. White, John M. Fowler Jan 1977

The Concept Of Character Development In The Writings Of Ellen G. White, John M. Fowler

Dissertations

Problem. Character development is a fundamental objective of the Seventh-day Adventist educational system. The purpose of this study was to define the concept of character development in the writings of Ellen G. White whose thought is foundational to the philosophy of the worldwide system of Seventh-day Adventist schools. The investigation focused on four subproblems: (1) the meaning and significance of character; (2) the nature of character development; (3) factors affecting character development; and (4) responsibility for character development.

Method. The problem was approached by (1) carefully perusing White's published writings and noting every statement related to the study; (2) inductively …

Dayton And The Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, George Ruppell S.M. Jun 1976

Dayton And The Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, George Ruppell S.M.

University of Dayton Review

Even today some people wonder why Dayton, Ohio is called the home of aviation and the mention of McCook, Wright and Patterson fields seems like another mystery. Even the news media before 1910 missed the big story. In Dayton the two sons of Bishop Milton Wright, Wilbur and Orville, bicycle builders and repairmen, thought that they could fly with an engine, and at the same time there was Samuel P. Langley, the head of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C., doing the same thing. The Dayton boys corresponded with everyone they thought would have some experience with flying. Octave Chanute …

Federal Reclamation In Utah To 1974, Glen Shagren May 1976

Federal Reclamation In Utah To 1974, Glen Shagren

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The Colorado River Basin of Utah covers approximately 49 percent of the state. A sizable snowfall, particularly in the Uintah Mountains, makes Utah's major contribution to the water flow of the Colorado River. During the spring runoff the melting snow finds its way to the Colorado River, which eventually empties into the Gulf of Mexico. In large measure this water has held, and still holds, the key to Utah's development.

Because Utah lies in an arid region, water is an extremely important resource. Upon arrival to the Great Basin in 1847, the Mormon pioneers immediately set about solving the problem …

A Christian Telephone Crisis Intervention Manual, John Calvin Kennington Apr 1976

A Christian Telephone Crisis Intervention Manual, John Calvin Kennington

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

In our society individuals face crisis situations regularly. From the beginning of life to its conclusion in death, a spider in the bathtub or an unkind remark, life moves from one crisis to another. Some things cause small emotional disturbances while others cause permanent psychological damage. What ever the cause, no crisis is small to the person going through it, and finding the resolution can become an all-consuming task. The problem of dealing with such emergencies is not new. Every generation has had to grapple with crises.

A History Of The Pacific Northwest District Conference Of The Evangelical Free Church Of America, Robert A. Rapp Apr 1976

A History Of The Pacific Northwest District Conference Of The Evangelical Free Church Of America, Robert A. Rapp

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The Evangelical Free Church of America is a merger. It should be noted that the Free Church groups that merged in 1950 to form the Evangelical Free Church of America, each had early beginnings in the Northwest.

The first Free Evangelical witness in the Pacific Northwest occurred in the decade of the 1880s, following the historic meetings of organization at Boone, Iowa, and Boston, Massachusetts in 1884. The first churches of both the Swedish and Norwegian-Danish groups were centered in the Seattle-Tacoma area. Progress and growth were impeded in those early days by language and distance barriers. By the time …
