Akyem Te: The Technology And Socio-Cultural Setting Of The Abompe Bauxite-Beadmaking Industry, Ghana, Yaw Bredwa-Mensah

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

Drawing primarily on data obtained from recent research at Akyem Abompe, Ghana, this paper examines the technology and socio-cultural setting of a stone-beadmaking industry in the forest zone of Ghana. Preliminary ethnographic observation of the industry not only reveals that it is community-based, but that it also interacts in a complex way with other local crafts in the village. The production process and marketing of the beads are discussed, as is the antiquity of the industry.

Between Earth And Heaven: The Dialectical Structure Of Ignatian Imagination, Paul G. Crowley Jan 1996

Between Earth And Heaven: The Dialectical Structure Of Ignatian Imagination, Paul G. Crowley

Religious Studies

The theology of liberation has by now entered the common lexicon not only of theologians, but of many people who have until recently expressed little interest in theology.1 It is a theological genre or, better, a "movement" issuing out of and responsive to the experience of the poor and suffering of history, based upon a conviction that the Gospel has direct pertinence to the concrete human condition. It calls for a liberating practice as the way salvation is to be realized in history. A theology of liberation understands the Gospel as a divine challenge to any exercise of political …

African Americans And The Bible, Vincent L. Wimbush Jan 1996

African Americans And The Bible, Vincent L. Wimbush

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Rationale for a History of "Readings": The history of the engagement of the Bible among African Americans is dramatic and complex and has important implications for biblical interpretation. It provides the student of the Bible not only a conceptual window onto a dramatic and complex history of self-definitions and worldviews among those in the modern world who now call themselves African Americans, but also the opportunity to rethink the basic hermeneutical assumptions about biblical interpretation, especially its focus upon the ancient text and/or ancient historical situation as the starting and end point of interpretation. The critical juxtaposition of the Bible …

Performance Practice Versus Performance Analysis: Why Should Performers Study Performance, José Antonio Bowen Jan 1996

Performance Practice Versus Performance Analysis: Why Should Performers Study Performance, José Antonio Bowen

Performance Practice Review

RILM abstract: "The descriptive study of performance analysis and performance history differs from the usually prescriptive field of performance practice. The investigation of musical performance can be divided into three layers: general period and geographic styles, the traditions which become attached to specific works, and individual innovations. Features of the first two are transparent to performers and listeners from the same period, but they determine most of the features of a performance. Performance style is like a linguistic accent; we can no more let the music speak for itself than we can speak words without some accent. Since performance traditions …

William And Isabel: Parallels Between The Life And Times Of The William Bliss Family, Transplanted New Englanders At Gettysburg, And A Nineteenth-Century Novel, 'Isabel Carollton: A Personal Retrospect' By Kneller Glen, Elwood W. Christ

Adams County History

By 3 July 1863, Union troops under the command of General George G. Meade and elements of General Robert E. Lee's Confederate army had struggled for two days over the rolling farm lands, ridges, and rocky crags around a small farming community and county seat known as Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Within the encompassing whirlpool ofbattle, however, smaller dramas had unfolded, and one of them is of interest to us here. The soldiers had been fighting for the possession of a house and barn situated equidistant between the battle lines about one and onequarter miles south-southwest of the town square. During a …

Oberlin Perfectionism And Its Edwardsean Origins, Allen C. Guelzo

Civil War Era Studies Faculty Publications

An impression has very generally prevailed," wrote James Harris Fairchild toward the end of his twenty-three-year presidency of Oberlin College, "that the theological views unleashed at Oberlin College by the late Rev. Charles Grandison Finney & his Associates involves a considerable departure from the accepted orthodox faith." It was an impression that Fairchild believed to be inaccurate, and he would probably be horrified to discover a century later that the prevailing impression the "Oberlin Theology" has made on historians of the nineteenth-century United States continues to be one in which Oberlin stands for almost all the progressive and enthusiastic unorthodoxies …

Introduction To Through A Glass Darkly: Essays In The Religious Imagination, John C. Hawley Jan 1996

Introduction To Through A Glass Darkly: Essays In The Religious Imagination, John C. Hawley

English

The question that so disturbed Christ's contemporaries resonates even now: "Who do you say that I am?" (Matt. 16 : 15). Paradoxically, the answers his disciples boldly or clumsily offer seem to define them far more clearly than describe their teacher. The New Testament stands as a record of their subsequent obsession with the question, with what they remember their answers to have been, and with how this radically creative interrogation ordered their remaining years. Throughout the centuries their own disciples, variously aided and obstructed by these confessions, used the question as a litmus test not only in their prayer …

An Annotated Bibliography Of Selected Historical Fiction About The American Frontier From 1840-1899 For Children And Young Adults, Karen Keller Jan 1996

An Annotated Bibliography Of Selected Historical Fiction About The American Frontier From 1840-1899 For Children And Young Adults, Karen Keller

Graduate Research Papers

This project was to produce a bibliography of historical fiction requested by teachers in Johnston Middle School, Johnston, Iowa, that can be used by the eighth-grade classes so that students may choose from a selected list of historical fiction books about the American West that will encompass both their literature theme of the will to survive and the historical setting of the American frontier as it moves West between 1840 and 1899. The fifty books annotated were chosen through criteria selected so as to produce a list of books that would meet the needs of the teachers of this unit. …

Katharine Susannah Prichard's Coonardoo : An Historical Study, Marion V. Austin-Crowe Jan 1996

Katharine Susannah Prichard's Coonardoo : An Historical Study, Marion V. Austin-Crowe

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The focus of this thesis is Katharine Susannah Prichard's novel, Coonardoo ( 1929), and its capacity to provide a framework for the reconstruction of the historical situation in the North-West region of Western Australia during the period mid-1860s to late 1920s. The thesis has a dual purpose: to contextualise the novel in terms of the historical, political, ideological, and social situation; and to read the novel in ways which reveal its reconstruction of the wider historical context. My approach is a new historicist close reading of the text. Specific events or situations are scrutinised for their power to convey insights …

The Role Of The Pastor In Lay Development In The Seventh-Day Adventist Church In Papua New Guinea, Aaron M. Lopa Jan 1996

The Role Of The Pastor In Lay Development In The Seventh-Day Adventist Church In Papua New Guinea, Aaron M. Lopa

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Statement of the Problem

The task of this study was to rethink the role of pastors as shepherd-equippers of lay leaders in view of the explosive growth of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Papua New Guinea.

Method

The dissertation has two parts. Part One covers: (1) institutional factors which provided the background for this study, (2) biblical and theological dimensions as the basis for the new pastoral paradigm in PNG, and (3) cultural and sociological factors as means to understand the local cultures in order to contextualize ministry to make it more relevant to the people. Part Two synthesizes the …

Marketing Strategies For Seventh-Day Adventist Literature In Brazil, Mario Paulo Martinelli Jan 1996

Marketing Strategies For Seventh-Day Adventist Literature In Brazil, Mario Paulo Martinelli

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

There is a great need for the publishing work in Brazil to use different methods. Although several changes have occurred with the advance of technology and urbanization, the methods employed to distribute SDA literature have remained practically the same as those used in earlier times. Literature evangelists are facing greater difficulties in personally talking with people. The traditional door-to-door sales method is reaching fewer and fewer people and new approaches are required to support colporteurs in their work. In addition, sales of literature to church members in Brazil are low and give evidence to the fact that strategies are …

Unraveling An Ancient Peruvian Tapestry Sampler: A Study Of Weaver Education In The Ica Valley, Peru, Elizabeth Sara Lewis Jan 1996

Unraveling An Ancient Peruvian Tapestry Sampler: A Study Of Weaver Education In The Ica Valley, Peru, Elizabeth Sara Lewis

Theses and Dissertations

A tapestry from the Ica Valley of Peru (A.D. 900-1476), in the collection of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond, Virginia, is the subject of this study. This thesis is an attempt to demonstrate that the tapestry is an example of a textile form known as a "sampler." Woven as a learning tool and template by an apprentice and an expert weaver within the style and reflecting the iconography of Ica art.

A three-part approach is taken to examine the Ica tapestry. First, it is necessary to prove that the piece is a sampler, woven in an apprenticeship situation, …
