The Sport Of The Gods, Paul Laurence Dunbar
The Sport Of The Gods, Paul Laurence Dunbar
Paul Laurence Dunbar Books
Perhaps a reflection of the turmoil Dunbar faced personally as his health continued to decline and his marriage ended, Dunbar's fourth and final novel, The Sport of the Gods, is considered a protest novel. Received far better by critics than any previous novel, the book tells the story of Berry Hamilton, a black butler charged with theft by his white employers. The story follows the family through the hardships they encounter as a result of this experience.

The Wedding Night, Ida C. Craddock, Paul Royster , Editor
Zea E-Books in American Studies
Ida Craddock took her own life in October 1902, rather than face the 5-year federal prison term she seemed certain to receive following her conviction for distributing this work through the U.S. Mail. Milton Wright Diaries: 1902, Milton Wright
Milton Wright Diaries
Bishop Milton Wright, father of Wilbur and Orville Wright, regularly recorded entries in his diary from 1857 until his death in 1917. This diary’s entries began on January 1902 and continue until December 1902. Wright records a variety of information regarding his travels, family history, and expenditures. Of particular note, this diary includes a record of the construction of the 1902 glider and in December begin construction of a 4-cylinder engine, which the researcher might find of interest. Wilbur also went to Huntington, Indiana, to defend his father in a case involving laymen's misuse of church funds. View the transcript …

The Lower Depths, Maxim Gorky
OER Main
"The Lower Depths" is considered one of Maxim Gorky's most masterful plays, and an exemplar of Russian social realism. The play first premiered in 1902 at the Moscow Arts Theatre, and focuses on a set of impoverished Russians living in a shelter and struggling to handle the harsh realities of their lives.
