Alexander On Form-In-Matter And The Breakdown Of Aristotle's Categories, John O. Ellis Dec 1992

Alexander On Form-In-Matter And The Breakdown Of Aristotle's Categories, John O. Ellis

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

My discussion is divided into six sections. In the first I provide some background to the form-in-matter problem in Aristotle; the second focusses on Alexander's solution to the problem; in the third, we consider Plotinus' contribution; in the fourth, there's brief treatment of the problem by the commentators on the Categories; and finally in the fifth section I look at what I call the 'Lucius problem' - this pertains directly to the substantial qualities doctrine, and it reveals, I suggest, how Alexander's way of solving the form-in-matter problem contributes to the breakdown of Aristotelian categories. In the sixth section …

The Future Of Denominational Research: Souther Baptist Research Fellowship, Larry L. Mcswain Dec 1992

The Future Of Denominational Research: Souther Baptist Research Fellowship, Larry L. Mcswain

Journal of the American Society for Church Growth

Denominational researchers must focus on their unique role in relation to the role of other researchers. Our future as competent and effective researchers is dependent on our ability to keep up with the technology available to us. We must develop and maintain networks among researchers to avoid duplication of effort and create adequate sharing of what we know. We must also find ways to include the most difficult research subjects in our efforts. Moreover, if our calling is to have any meaning we must have the kinds of relationships and influence with decision makers that the information we have will …

Monsters Of Antithesis, Melody Leming-Wilson Jun 1992

Monsters Of Antithesis, Melody Leming-Wilson

Anthós Journal (1990-1996)

This paper traces and interrogates the multiple theories of matriarchy that have arisen in recent years and then turns to the Greek myths to show how matriarchies functioned in this literature. The theories of matriarchy often stem from the pre-Hellenic stories of matriarchy shown in Greek myths. In addition, these theories often suggest that the colonizing force of Indo-Europeans changed these myths into patriarchical ones. The Amazonian women can be seen to upset the patriarchal myth in important and interesting ways which suggest a matriarchal underpinning to their society. The question of whether a historical matriarchy actually existed is shown …

The Dialectical Convergence Of Rhetoric And Ethics: The Imperative Of Public Conversation, Lawrence Kimmel Jan 1991

The Dialectical Convergence Of Rhetoric And Ethics: The Imperative Of Public Conversation, Lawrence Kimmel

Philosophy Faculty Research

Man is a rule-making, rule-governed creature—he is, as Aristotle put it, an animal defined by and within a community of speech. The two disciplines of ethics and rhetoric and the cultural activities they engage are instrumental to this defining activity of human life. If moral life is riddled with ambiguities, theoretical understanding of it is no less plagued with an ambivalent relationship which rhetoric and ethics have to each other, despite their mutual concern with the practical affairs of human beings. To argue a necessary convergence of rhetoric and ethics for an understanding of moral life, it is ironic and …

A Study Of The Preservation Of The Classical Tradition In The Education, Language, And Literature Of The Byzantine Empire, Germaine Manuel Apr 1989

A Study Of The Preservation Of The Classical Tradition In The Education, Language, And Literature Of The Byzantine Empire, Germaine Manuel

Masters Theses

The medieval Byzantine world can be perceived as a cultural anomaly in the history of western civilization. During the entire course of its existence, those who endeavored to preserve the light of learning drew inspiration from the classical heritage of Greece and Rome. The education, literature, and language of Byzantium were modeled on what had been bequeathed by the classical world of centuries past.

This paper endeavors to examine the integral role played by the ancient pagan legacy in the curriculum that was followed in Byzantine schools; to illustrate the very potent influence exerted by Homer in the learning and …

The Destunis Collection In The Manuscript Section Of The Saltykov-Shchedrin State Public Library In Leningrad, Theophilus C. Prousis

History Faculty Research and Scholarship

This work began as an outgrowth of a research project on Russian culture and the Greek War of Independence: a study in Russian philhellenism. The opportunity to conduct research in the Soviet Union in 1980-81 and 1987-88 brought to light new themes and sources in the field of Greek-Slavic cultural relations. Access to the archival collections of several Greeks who achieved prominence in Russia provided concrete information on their contributions to Russian society and culture in a variety of areas, such as civic activity, education, scholarship, and publicistic endeavors.

Fantasy And The Tradition Of Christian Art, Gene Edward Veith Mar 1988

Fantasy And The Tradition Of Christian Art, Gene Edward Veith

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Argues that “Christianity [...] was instrumental in making fantasy literature conceptually possible” by undermining “the principle of art as mimesis”—through the Hebraic injunction against idols and the Christian view of pagan myths as untrue but acceptable as “aesthetically delightful.”

Lukan Easter Formation: Living Out The Resurrection, Edgar M. Krentz Jan 1988

Lukan Easter Formation: Living Out The Resurrection, Edgar M. Krentz

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

(Excerpt)

We will discuss two types of Easter formation in the early church, with Acts and Luke as guides to our Easter mystagogy. The topic is in one sense natural for a New Testament scholar, since all writers of the New Testament begin theologically from the resurrected Christ, because a Christian's life-style (to use a modem shibboleth) is formed in the New Testament from the event of baptism, and because early Christian parenesis is essentially a realization of life under the Lordship of the Resurrected One. But it also brings some problems.

The Lives Of The Peripatetics: Diogenes Laertius, Vitae Philosophorum, Book Five, Michael Sollenberger Dec 1986

The Lives Of The Peripatetics: Diogenes Laertius, Vitae Philosophorum, Book Five, Michael Sollenberger

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

The fifth book of Diogenes Laertius’ Lives of the Philosophers is concerned with the first four heads of the Peripatos – Aristotle, Theophrastus, Strato, and Lyco – and two outstanding members of the school – Demetrius of Phalerum and Heraclides of Pontus. Consideration is given her to rather general matters of structure, organization, and arrangement of material in Book Five as a whole, to the different categories of information in the individual lives, and to the most striking feature of this book which set it apart from other books: namely, the wills of the first four scholarchs and the extensive …
