Bouncing Back: Resilience And Its Limits In Late-Age Composing, Louise Wetherbee Phelps Jan 2023

Bouncing Back: Resilience And Its Limits In Late-Age Composing, Louise Wetherbee Phelps

English Faculty Publications

This essay is one of a series on my mother’s late-age composing, studying a writing project she started at age 70 and worked on for more than 25 years. Her intention was to integrate extensive reading, personal experience, and cultural observations to explain changes in parenting (and, by extension, education and enculturation of the next generation) from her childhood in the 1920s through the 2000s. When she died at 97, she left behind a 75-page draft, but was unable to complete her plans for revisions and an ending. I focus here on identifying the multiple factors in the ecology of …

Puerto Rico has experienced a rapid increase in the older adult population over the last decade. With a growing older adult population, the importance of healthy aging becomes increasingly more important to understand. Understanding the impact that impairments in cognitive and physical functioning have on older adults in Puerto Rico will be important to supporting the rapidly aging population. The current project proposed to (1) examine predictors of transition to frailty, (2) examine whether cognitive function and frailty are associated with healthcare utilization, and (3) examine frailty and cognitive impairment as predictors of mortality and Alzheimer’s disease related cause of …

Successful Aging Among Midlife Black Women: A Latent Class Analysis, Joshua Christian Julian Lewis Jan 2023

Successful Aging Among Midlife Black Women: A Latent Class Analysis, Joshua Christian Julian Lewis

All ETDs from UAB

Successful aging (SA), as outlined by Rowe and Khan, with its objective focus on disease and disability avoidance, maintaining high physical and cognitive function, and sustaining engagement in social and productive activities, was meant to be a benchmark for assessing health and aging. However, given its rigid criteria virtually no one “ages successfully” despite being in otherwise relatively good health. The assumption of unsuccessful aging in populations who experience a higher prevalence of chronic disease, illness, disability, and other health disparities, is implicit in the SA framework outlined by Rowe and Khan and would preclude many Black women from being …

The Effectiveness Of Community Music Therapy: An Annotated Bibliography, University Of Denver

Musicology and Ethnomusicology: Student Scholarship

Music Therapy has been a contribution to the aid of mental health professionals who believe that alternative types of therapy, usually in hand with other traditional forms or medications, can be a benefit to those who suffer with mental disorders like depression. It has been an accepted fact for several decades that music therapy is in fact a useful practice. However, over the last two decades, a sub-section of music therapy, known as Community music therapy, has been introduced to mental health professionals and has been subject to data collection and evaluation. I decided to look into Community music therapy …

Gerontic Evangelism, Yakubu Jakada Oct 2022

Gerontic Evangelism, Yakubu Jakada

Great Commission Research Journal

Gerontic Evangelism focuses on sharing the gospel with senior adults. Many evangelism ministries are focusing on children, youth, women, and other adult members of society, but few focus on the elderly. Senior adults in most cases are not seen as a peculiar group that needs to be strategically reached with the gospel. Their importance in society and their growing population worldwide should attract the attention of evangelists and missionaries to target them as a special group for gospel witness. This paper argues that winning the senior adults to Christ is a necessity and may open doors for the evangelization and …

Secret Dance And Bring Light: Enhancing User Autonomy With Directional Ambiguity In Positive Emotion Regulation Interventions, Jeremy Faulk, Oluwanifemi Oluwadairo, Jungkyoon Yoon

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This case study summarizes the development of a self-administered behavioral inter-vention for positive emotion regulation (PER) that gives users the freedom to choose their own positive behaviors. In contrast to the predominant practice of prescribing pos-itive behaviors (e.g., “keep a gratitude journal”), we explore whether – and how – open-ended instructions could permit users to self-select such behaviors themselves. Employ-ing a research-through-design approach over 4 iterations, our interventions utilize am-biguous prompts (e.g., ‘secret dance’ and ‘bring light’) intended to inspire users to first envision and then perform self-selected positive behaviors during their day-to-day lives. The authors engage in self-reflective exercises …

Empathy In The Design Of Assistive Devices For Older Adults: An Exploratory Study With Portuguese Women, Daniela Silva, Alison Burrows, Paula Trigueiros Jun 2022

Empathy In The Design Of Assistive Devices For Older Adults: An Exploratory Study With Portuguese Women, Daniela Silva, Alison Burrows, Paula Trigueiros

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Assistive Devices (AD) aim to enhance the autonomy of their users, among whom are older adults. However, older adults often have negative feelings towards these products, such as the fear of dependence, which in turn influence their acceptance and use. These feelings can result from the use of design approaches that focus merely on users’ physical abilities. This article argues for the importance of rethinking approaches to the design of AD by focusing on a holistic and empathic view of older people. It also seeks to contribute to a richer understanding of what independence and dependence means to older people. …

Tinder And Heartbeats: Wellbeing In The Use Of Dating Applications, Petra Salaric, Rebecca Cain, Emilene Zitkus, Valentijn Visch

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Currently, there are more than 1500 dating applications, allowing people to connect with a single swipe. However, there is a rising concern about the behaviour encouraged by these digital forms of interactions in relation to negative effects on user wellbeing. Using an evocative autoethnographic approach combined with literature review, this study aimed to explore potential connections between the interaction design, user interactions, and user experiences within dating applications by following weekly experiences over four dating applications. The experiences were recorded with a journal, then explored using emotion capture cards, and visualised in emotionally mapped timelines. It was found that even …

YouTube was one of the first platforms fuelling every layperson's dream to get a taste of stardom. Standing true to its promise, it exposed everyone to content creation and every aspect of fame that comes with content creation. The good, the bad, and the ugly side of the online platform involve the trolls and hate comments on the online platforms. It was eventually noticed that the trolling phenomena are shaping up biasedly and follow gender inequality recently. The online trolls are severe and ugly, especially for female content creators. The comments were harsh, demeaning and sometimes vindictive. Looking at this …

Mosaic: A Lifetime Of Poems, Emma F. Bowen

Honors Projects

In hopes of providing a clearer picture of the aging process and its effects on our personalities, follow this collection of poems through diary-like entries of individuals navigating their lives from daycare, heartbreak, and loneliness. The impact that development can have on our psychological well-being and brains is fascinating and feels familiar. Why do we see the world so differently when we are young? As we grow older, what is so important that makes us shift how we view ourselves and our environment multiple times? It is often seen that each generation shares like-mindedness throughout their lives – why?

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Friendships between women are common and essential parts of women's lives; however, they are often overlooked. This capstone project titled Girl Friends is a film on which eight women are interviewed and asked about their friendships with other women. They discuss the importance of having female friends and how they create love, support, and companionship. The interviewees also talk about female friendships and romantic partners coexisting, the pressures to find a romantic partner to find fulfillment, as opposed to good friends. Additionally, they describe how friendships between women can be competitive and catty, and how female relationships can change as …

Colour, Light, And Materiality: Biophilic Interior Design Presence In Research And Practice, Beth Mcgee, Nam-Kyu Park

Interiority

The biophilic design hypothesis uses nature-based environmental design for optimising people’s health and well-being. Stephen Kellert in 2008 developed a list of biophilic attributes that was further refined in the Biophilic Interior Design Matrix (BID-M) to specifically support the interior application of biophilic design for health and well-being. The present study further investigates biophilic interior design using the BID-M language and the key interior design components colour, light, and materiality. The first part of the study reviewed four decades of literature related to biophilia and colour, light, and materiality to investigate a total of 19 publications. The second part of …
