Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The history of new state movements in America is always an absorbing study; the character of the settlers and the compelling factors that motivate them are revealed with startling clarity as the reader turns the pages back into the annals of the period. The history of America has been, in a large degree, says Frederick J. Turner, "the history of the colonization of the Great West. The existence of an area of free land, its continuous recession, and the advance of American settlement westward, explain American development." In no state was the influence of the frontier advance upon political development …

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The recent passage of the Swing-Johnson bill by Congress and its approval by the President has been the signal for a general rejoicing throughout the West, and especially in Southern California, the section to be meet directly benefited by this legislation. There has been a widespread feeling that the long fight for Federal development of this great western river is over, and that we may begin shortly to realize some concrete returns upon our investment. Press reports indicate that many are already seeking work on the construction of the dam at Black Canyon, in anticipation of the immediate launching of …

Newman As An Historian, John H. Schlosser
Newman As An Historian, John H. Schlosser
Bachelors’ Theses
In this thesis I am attempting to evaluate the historical · writings of John Henry, Cardinal, Newman. Most of the material herein contained may also be found in Jos. J. Reilly's excellent book, "Newman as a Man of Letters", however, I have treated some few phrases of Newman's history which that author ignores. The topic of my thesis, "Newman as an Historian", though treated at greater length by Reilly, is of merely secondary importance in his volume, consequently there are certain points, small or elementary, which the scope of that work m4de it impossible for h1m to treat. These, then, …

Bachelors’ Theses
The first half of the Nineteenth Century is one of the most important, and of universal interest. It is notable for two very important events namely: the establishment of democracy in government, and the triumph of romanticism in literature.
