The Good Move-In: Enhancing Voice And Participation In Transitions To Supported Housing, Line Gad Christiansen, Joan Pedersen
IASDR Conference Series
This project explores the complexities surrounding the transition of young adults with special needs into municipally operated supported housing in Denmark. This life-changing move is managed by local municipalities and ideally involves collaboration between the resident, their relatives, and a caseworker. Despite the intention of ensuring participation and involvement, practical and emotional challenges often limit meaningful inclusion. The project ’The Good Move-in’ enabled the researchers to examine how such transitions are currently handled and developed methods to strengthen the voice and self-determination of residents—particularly those with limited verbal communication. Through interviews, visual tools, and co-creative tasks—including a construction task—the project …

The promotion of specialty coffee and the opening of coffee shops have surged in Hong Kong in recent years, establishing the city as a leading destination for specialty coffee. A previous study revealed an intentional effort to preserve what we refer to as an ‘Old Hong Kong style’ in the design of these shops. To better understand the motivations behind this design choice, this study investigates the intentions of those involved in shaping these spaces. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 11 representatives from modern specialty coffee shops identified as exhibiting a deliberate ‘Old Hong Kong’ aesthetic. The interview participants included …

Exploring An Exhibition Model To Create An Accessible Entry Point To Traditional Crafts, Yoshimune Ishikawa
IASDR Conference Series
Traditional crafts embody the skills and knowledge cultivated in local communities and passed down through generations, preserving unique regional cultures and identities. However, these traditions are now in rapid decline, facing challenges such as a shortage of successors, a lack of materials, and a declining public interest due to changing consumer lifestyles. While administrative bodies and museums are working to counteract this trend through exhibitions, this study explores a new exhibition model designed to create a more accessible entry point to traditional crafts. To this end, we held an exhibition in 2024 featuring "Nomin Bijutsu" (Farmers' Art), a traditional craft …

Participatory Design Insights From Ai Mobility Projects In Amsterdam, Heng Gu, Senthil Chandrasegaran, Euiyoung Kim
IASDR Conference Series
How much participation is “enough” for artificial intelligence (AI) in public space? We investigate three Amsterdam urban mobility system (UMS) projects —crowd-monitoring cameras, parking-scan vehicles and value-based routing—to examine participatory trajectory with the goal of projecting legitimacy beyond technical execution. To trace who gained voice (and when) across conception, deployment, and operation of the projects, we combined Arnstein’s Ladder and stakeholder mapping as a minimal toolkit. Findings reveal recurrent gaps and challenges in identifying and engaging impacted stakeholders. We sought first-hand, in-depth accounts from project managers of the UMS projects to offer richer context to the decisions made throughout the …

"A Second Glance": Anthropomorphic Tools As Speculative Companion, Yixuan Wei, Dag Aarsland, Wei Liu
"A Second Glance": Anthropomorphic Tools As Speculative Companion, Yixuan Wei, Dag Aarsland, Wei Liu
IASDR Conference Series
This paper explores how anthropomorphic design can function as a speculative pathway toward alternative futures. Drawing on the vision of design as a form of critical speculation, it proposes that endowing objects with human-like qualities, often accompanied by unexpected behaviours and effects, invites new modes of engagement that are emotional and narratives of the self. By examining selected design cases and artefacts that evoke anthropomorphic thinking, the study argues that such designs do not simply imitate life but provoke reflections on human entanglement with objects they live around and interact with every day, the fragility of agency, and the companionship …

The convergence of design and foresight is emerging as a powerful approach to navigate uncertainties and envision alternative futures. This study investigates how design and foresight are mutually facilitated based on the following questions: What are the current challenges in foresight practice? How can design meaningfully enhance foresight processes? Despite the growth of academic interest in frameworks such as experiential futures and design futuring, foresight practices of many organisations (particularly private corporations) remain limited in scope and imagination. Drawing on a practice-based perspective, this paper examines five organisational cases – the Japan Research Institute, the Taiwan Design Research Institute, the …
Non-Human Rights And Posthuman Governance: How Speculative Design Simulate The Dwelling Politics Of 'Cross-Species Symbiosis Lives'?, Wenjia Sun
IASDR Conference Series
This paper examines the interplay between non-human rights and posthuman governance, delving into how Speculative Design practice of Legislative Fictioneering and symbiotic scenario-building enables us to provotype alternative social contracts and the dwelling politics of 'cross-species symbiosis lives.' Within the framework of dec on str acting of technological determinism, the proposed project, 'Cross-species Symbiosis Lives' employs provotypes to augment tangible Legislative Fictioneering, material science, and embedded governance approaches that acknowledge non-human agency and legal personhood position from a futurological perspective. Notably, the paper critically analyzes the neoliberal tendencies within Speculative Design, which tend to privatize legal imagination and reduce systemic …

This study explores how accommodation can enhance travelers’ local experiences through product- service combinations. While prior research has focused on local immersion during sightseeing, little attention has been paid to how lodging environments support such experiences. To address this gap, in-depth interviews were conducted with millennial travelers (aged 20–39) who had repeatedly booked international accommodations. Using personal inventories and semi-structured interviews, the study identified products and moments that enriched emotional and cultural engagement. Thematic analysis revealed four key themes—Accommodation, Local Experiences, Products, and Emotion—highlighting how design elements in accommodations influence travelers’ emotional continuity. Findings suggest that standardized hotel environments may …

Historical design research often prioritizes grand narratives, while the cultural sig- nificance of everyday objects and their spatial contexts is frequently overlooked. Addressing this gap, this study investigates the evolution of "object-space" order in domestic environments through an integrated approach combining computer vision technology and natural language processing. By analysing image data across different periods, we identify object categories, placements, and spatial configurations, revealing micro-level organizational patterns and macro-level influ- ences of functionality and socio-cultural factors. Combining qualitative and quanti- tative methods—including interviews and computational analysis—we trace the transformation of Chinese residential spaces since the 1980s. Findings demon- strate how …

Gongbi Artists' Acceptance Of Aigc: An Extended Tam Analysis With Qualitative And Quantitative Data, Yuhang Mao, Anthony Kong
IASDR Conference Series
Gongbi painting artists’ acceptance of Artificial Intelligence Generated Content (AIGC) through an extended Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). Using mixed methods (204 questionnaires and 15 interviews), we explored the effects of cultural adaptability, creative subjectivity, and ethical risk. Findings show that cultural adaptability significantly increases perceived usefulness and ease of use, while ethical risk negatively impacts adoption. Creative subjectivity strongly promotes willingness to use AIGC. However, perceived usefulness and ease of use do not directly affect intention. Results highlight the need for culturally sensitive AI design that balances tradition and innovation, while addressing ethical concerns.

Two robust “recipes” for material/process innovation (MAT) are identified—DIG·SUS → MAT and DIG·CUL → MAT—while DIG approaches necessity after 2015. A FAIR-aligned archive was built in the Loughborough University Repository with persistent identifiers, …
A Burlesque: The Shimmering Body Of Revealing, Lola Montgomery
A Burlesque: The Shimmering Body Of Revealing, Lola Montgomery
Staff Scholarship - Australia & Dubai
A Burlesque: The Shimmer Manuscript is a hybrid critical–creative work that examines burlesque as an embodied methodology and a mode of knowledge production. Drawing from my two decades as a performer–scholar, the work reframes glamour, desire, and adornment as epistemological practices rather than theatrical ornamentation. The project is significant in that it expands understandings of performance studies, autotheory, and feminist aesthetics by foregrounding the performer’s body as an intelligent, sensing, world-making apparatus.
The methodology is creative practice research and archive-driven, integrating backstage documentation, AI-assisted photomontage, and theoretical reflection. The work draws from poststructuralist and feminist frameworks (Irigaray, Deleuze & Guattari, …
The Rhetorical Discourse Of Uniate Writers’ Polemic Literature Of The End Of The 16th – First Half Of The 17th Century In The Retrospection Of Oratory's History, Ruslan Tkachuk
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The examination of the poetics inherent in the polemical prose authored by Uniate writers during the late 16th and the first half of the 17th centuries holds substantial significance for comprehending rhetoric as a pivotal element in the stylistic evolution of Ukrainian literature throughout this period. The objective of this article is to explore the interrelationship between the works of Uniate polemicists and the framework of classical rhetoric, particularly by elucidating the functioning of rhetorical figures and argumentation techniques within their texts. To accomplish this aim, a range of literary methodologies were employed. Those methods included historical-cultural, comparative-historical, biographical, structural-analytical, …

Charity Begins With Zoning Reforms, Mark D. Bjelland
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
When my family moved to Michigan over a decade ago, we were looking for something more than a three-bedroom house in our price range. We wanted a place of beauty, refreshment, and welcome for our children and guests. As newcomers to the state, we took the location seriously. Our previous house lost value due to its small-town setting, so we worried about future property values. As an urban geographer, I mapped changes in demographics and housing prices and created bike and bus travel-time maps from work and schools.
European-Islamic Ceramics From The Eighteenth Century Onward, Katherine Collins
European-Islamic Ceramics From The Eighteenth Century Onward, Katherine Collins
Honors Program Theses and Projects
The foundation for this examination rests upon prior research analyzing ceramic traditions and trade routes across East Asia and the Islamic Empires from the eighth to the sixteenth centuries. This knowledge establishes how East Asian innovations, such as porcelain and underglaze techniques, flowed westward through the Middle East via silk trade routes, profoundly influencing South Asian, Middle Eastern, and Ottoman ceramic production and aesthetics. They were able to trace how crucial Islamic technical traditions, including lusterware and tin-glazing, were subsequently transmitted to the Mediterranean basin through conquest and trade. This provided the technical vocabulary necessary for European precursors such as …

Israeli Hasbara And The Nba’S Palestine Exception: The Impossibility Of Capitalist “Social Justice”, Chen Chen, Anthony J. Weems, Roc Rochon, Daniel Sailofsky
Sport Management Collection
Sport is a notable site for the Israeli state in its hasbara (public diplomacy, or “explaining”) effort that seeks to normalize the conditions of ethnic cleansing, illegal settlement, and apartheid practices in historic and occupied Palestine. Against the backdrop of the genocide in Gaza and the lack of international sport sanctions against Israeli teams, this paper maps several hasbara activities/attempts featuring the National Basketball Association (NBA) in the last decade. This is a worthwhile case, not least because of the NBA’s self-branding as a socially “progressive” league composed of a primarily Black/African American athletic workforce. Two major observations are made: …
羅漢住寺 : 道宣的中土聖寺建構與感應敘事, Yuanju Liu
羅漢住寺 : 道宣的中土聖寺建構與感應敘事, Yuanju Liu
嶺南學報 Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies
The concept of the Arhat originated in India and, upon its transmission to China, gradually evolved into a religious figure capable of miraculous response and divine manifestation. This paper examines the narratives of Arhats and sacred temples in Scroll third of Ji Shenzhou Sanbao Gantong Lu (Records of Miraculous Responses to the Three Treasures in China) , compiled by Daoxuan (596—667), through both religious and literary perspectives. By citing scriptures such as the Entry into the Mahāyāna Sūtra (Ru Dasheng Lun), translated by Dharmakṣema in the Northern Liang, Daoxuan reinterprets the tripartite cosmological framework …

Reading Between Lines: Mapping El Orinoco Ilustrado, Guillermo Pupo Pernet
Reading Between Lines: Mapping El Orinoco Ilustrado, Guillermo Pupo Pernet
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines El Orinoco Ilustrado (EOI) by Joseph Gumilla as a layered textual and cartographic artifact central to the production of colonial knowledge in the Orinoco River basin. Moving beyond surface narratives of evangelization and exploration, it interrogates the sombras and silencios implanted in the Jesuit chronicle. Through an intradisciplinary approach combining literary analysis, archival research, and visual studies, the study reveals how EOI helped construct imperial visions of space, race, and resource extraction in eighteenth-century Spanish America. The dissertation is structured around six chapters. Chapter One outlines a theoretical framework. Chapter Two provides a longue durée historical context, …

Knowing One's Place At The Table: Taste As A Means Of Othering In The American Colonies, 1700-1775, Nicholas Harp
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
This thesis began as an inquiry into a simple question. How did people in the American colonies talk about the food that they ate? This question led to a fascinating look into the social dynamics of the people living in eighteenth century America. Their own personal writings demonstrate how they understood their place in society through the food that they ate. Moreover, they often wrote about the way that other people ate in ways that alienated or discriminated against different ethnic groups. A look into the secondary historiography revealed that other historians had noticed this trend. However, very few addressed …
