Archaeological Investigation Along The Route Of U.S. 281, From Mulberry Avenue To Tuxedo Avenue In San Antonio, Clive Luke

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

The route of impending U.S. 281 from Mulberry Avenue to Tuxedo Avenue in San Antonio traverses the valley of Olmos Creek. The creek originates in the southern edge of the Edwards Plateau between Leon Creek and Salado Creek, and flows in a southeasterly direction to its confluence with the San Antonio River. Near that confluence is a series of large fissure springs occurring along the fault zone. The topography of the drainage area varies from rolling to hill, with the area under concern in this report being undeveloped and covered with brush (Corp of Engineers, US Army, 1972).

The Olmos …

41bx171: A Late Nineteenth Century City Dump In San Antonio, Texas, Clive Luke

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

One trench was excavated to a length of thirty-five feet. It was oriented approximately north-south and designated Trench One. To eliminate unnecessary man hours, a backhoe initially removed the disturbed and late fill from the upper levels of the trench. Beneath the levels removed by backhoe, the trench was staked in units of five feet by five feet. Each unit was excavated by hand in arbitrary one foot levels, but the ashy soil was not screened. The elevation of a point on a concrete slab in the middle of the trench was established, using a Texas Highway Department Bench Mark …

Perception And Land Use: The Case Of The Mormon Culture Region, Lester D. Campbell Jan 1974

Perception And Land Use: The Case Of The Mormon Culture Region, Lester D. Campbell

Theses and Dissertations

Since the first man perceived and used his environment, there has existed a reciprocal man-land relationship. The physical environment provides opportunities for man's use and also sets limitations. Man's perception and use of his environment is greatly influenced by his culture, which consists of past experience, technology, attitudes, and needs. It is these factors that determine what a man will see as possibilities in land use, and how he will use his environment.

In the case of the relic Mormon Culture Region, Mormon religious beliefs highly influenced perception of the environment. Most visual geographical features of the landscape in the …

The Journey To Worship: A Case Study In Waterloo, Ontario, Douglas Craig Witmer Jan 1972

The Journey To Worship: A Case Study In Waterloo, Ontario, Douglas Craig Witmer

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This paper examines religious spatial interaction within an urban environment and as such contributes to the sparse literature on the Geography of Religion. It is the specific purpose to illustrate the journey to worship of households in the City of Waterloo, Ontario and to explain the spatial pattern utilizing the Principle of Least Effort.

It is discovered that if historical tension and dimensional tension are considered, one is able to predict the actual pattern of the journey to worship with seventy per cent accuracy. The fact that a large per cent of the sample attend the closest church of their …

Consideration Of Macro-Climatic And Macro-Biotic Change In The Ozark Highlands During Post-Glacial Times, Kenneth W. Cole Jan 1971

Consideration Of Macro-Climatic And Macro-Biotic Change In The Ozark Highlands During Post-Glacial Times, Kenneth W. Cole

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Climatological, pedological and faunal investigations conducted in the Upper Midwest and the Ozark Highlands indicate that the environment to which man in the Ozarks was adapting over the past 12,000 years has undergone several major shifts, beginning with a cool-moist boreal forest situation followed by a period of warming and aridness resulting in prairie and deciduous forest climaxes and subsequently, in the last 4000-5000 years, change to the pattern reflected by present conditions.
