"That Was Something I Had To Get Used To”: Communication Challenges Of African Graduate Teaching Assistants, Mohammed Hafiz Nabila
"That Was Something I Had To Get Used To”: Communication Challenges Of African Graduate Teaching Assistants, Mohammed Hafiz Nabila
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative study examined the communication challenges and adaptive strategies of African Graduate Teaching Assistants (AGTAs) in U.S. higher education, focusing on East Tennessee State University. The study aimed to understand how AGTAs navigate linguistic, cultural, and institutional barriers in their teaching roles. Using semi-structured interviews with seven participants, data were analyzed through thematic analysis to identify key patterns and meanings. Findings revealed challenges related to accents, cultural adjustment, and limited institutional preparation. Faculty mentorship played a vital role in shaping AGTAs’ confidence, interpretation of challenges, and professional growth. However, lack of support often led to isolation and self-doubt. The …

Mountain Communities During A Time Of War: A Case Study Of The Hutsul Region In The Carpathian Mountains Of Ukraine, Pavlo Rybaruk
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates the ethno-ecological technologies employed by the Hutsul people within the highland agrarian economy of the Carpathian Mountains. Over centuries, the Hutsuls have developed ethno-ecological technologies that maintain ecological integrity while supporting community livelihoods.
The study addresses three primary research questions: What are the most important ethno-ecological technologies of the Hutsul highland economy? How might these traditional ethno-ecological practices be applied to economic, agricultural, and tourism development in the Hutsul region? How might these traditional ethno-ecological practices be combined with contemporary approaches to encourage sustainable development in the region?
The research explores the devastating impact of the Russian …
“Are There Any British Soldiers In Tobruk?” National Identity During The Siege Of Tobruk, May To November 1941, Stewart Golightly Weight
“Are There Any British Soldiers In Tobruk?” National Identity During The Siege Of Tobruk, May To November 1941, Stewart Golightly Weight
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Throughout this thesis, I examine what it meant to be British during the 1941 Siege of Tobruk. This is important as it reveals previous assumptions about the Second World War’s British Army, including its religious practices and regional distinctions, were more diverse and influential than previously assumed. To do this, I analyze previously overlooked sources concerning religion, morality, and regional identities to demonstrate that Second World War Britishness was not monolithic.
“Starlight Suite”: A Compositional Exploration Of The Argo Navis Constellations In Three Movements, Adam Miller
“Starlight Suite”: A Compositional Exploration Of The Argo Navis Constellations In Three Movements, Adam Miller
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores a compositional technique in which stellar constellations are arranged upon musical staves in a variety of iterations to create a basis from which to draw melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic material. These raw extrapolations of unaltered notes are then arranged and orchestrated into thematic music for full orchestra, centered around elements from the mythological background behind the constellations used. An accompanying analysis explains the specific applications of this technique within each movement of the work, the significance of each, and the variety of ways in which musical inspiration was drawn from the raw materials. The objective of this …

Framerate Sensitivity And Cinemagoing Explain The Soap Opera Effect Of Films: A Preregistered Study Of Undergraduate Students In Singapore., Sonny Rosenthal, Benjamin J. Li
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
The soap opera effect is an unsettling feeling that some individuals experience while watching films at a high framerate. It has received little scholarly attention, and most explanations of it are speculative or anecdotal. Drawing on the mere exposure effect, this preregistered laboratory experiment provides new evidence of framerate sensitivity and cinemagoing as explanatory factors of the soap opera effect. Undergraduate students (N = 270) reported their cinemagoing and completed a novel task to measure their framerate sensitivity. They also completed a task indicating their framerate preferences. Those with a higher framerate sensitivity and more regular cinemagoing preferred the standard …

Chatgpt In Teaching English As A Foreign Language: Teacher And Learner Perspectives, Sameiha Alhussain N Khawaji
University of Tabuk Journal for Humanities and Social Sciences
This study investigates ChatGPT as a supplementary tool in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) education through surveys of 150 teachers and 350 learners in Asia, Europe and Latin America. Results show that ChatGPT improves language proficiency by providing personalized feedback, conversational fluency (72% of users reported improvement), writing scores by 22% and vocabulary through contextualized practice. Teachers found it useful for lesson planning and administrative tasks. However, challenges such as plagiarism risks (15% of cases), occasional inaccuracies and cultural insensitivities especially in idiomatic and formal language use require ethical guidelines and human oversight. For example, Asian participants noted mismatches …

Abu Hayyan Al-Andalusi's (D.745ah) Methodological Rules In Grammar Lessons, The Term (Correct) In His Book Al-Tadheel Wa Al-Takmeel As A Model, An Analytical Study, Mohammad Abdullah Al-Mazzah
University of Tabuk Journal for Humanities and Social Sciences
This research aims to identify the methodology adopted by Abu Hayyan al-Andalusi in his book "Al-Tadhiyal wa al-Takmil" for correction, through a descriptive and analytical study that traces the mechanisms of correction and weighting in his treatment of grammatical issues, and the extent of his adherence to the methodological controls he set for himself. The research begins with an introduction explaining the importance of the research, its problems and objectives, and previous studies, followed by a preface on the importance of judgmental terms in Arabic grammar. The first section focuses on defining the concepts of "correct" and 'weighting' in grammatical …
Ethnomusicologically Augmented French Diction Course, Jake Larcqua
Ethnomusicologically Augmented French Diction Course, Jake Larcqua
Doctoral Scholarly Projects & Capstones
Modern diction pedagogy in university vocal performance education largely depends on a combination of International Phonetic Alphabet transcription study and the application of those systems to Western-Classical vocal repertoire. However, recent research in related fields suggests we may be able to expand our diction teaching methods to better meet the needs of our students. Using a combination of second-language pedagogic principles, folksong structure, self-efficacy concepts, modeling structures, and ethnomusicological perspectives on classroom culture, I have drafted a French diction course that should improve not only students’ performance within university vocal music education, but also students’ confidence in their ability to …

Ai-Facilitated Abuse & Misogyny: A Feminist Response To Non-Consensual Intimate Image Deepfakes, Lizbeth Carmona
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The creation of non-consensual intimate images utilizing AI deepfake technology has been demonstrated to overwhelmingly target women. The harms of non-consensual intimate image deepfakes are similar to other forms of misogynistic abuse, including intimate image abuse and online objectification. This project seeks to contextualize this phenomenon within feminist accounts of misogyny and its role in regulating women's behavior. In particular, this project highlights that the accessibility of this technology has lowered the threshold of abuse, despite the individual woman's preventive measures. Furthermore, this project argues that the dissemination of non-consensual intimate image deepfakes is a morally problematic situation because it …

Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the intersection of art, linguistics, and ideography through the lens of personal and cultural heritage rooted in the Huasteca region of Central Mexico. Drawing inspiration from familial connections to the pueblos of Huazalingo and Huejutla in Hidalgo, Mexico, the research examines the cultural complexities of bicultural and binational experiences. It is grounded in the theoretical framework of Nepantla, a concept introduced by Gloria Anzaldúa to describe the unseen space of the border life as one of existing between worlds, identities, and cultures. Included and essential to this work is the Coyolxauhqui Imperative, which informs the process of …

One Individual’S Culmination Is Another’S Abyss: The Matter Of Mattering, Lou Agosta
One Individual’S Culmination Is Another’S Abyss: The Matter Of Mattering, Lou Agosta
Turning Toward Being: The Journal of Ontological Inquiry in Education
One individual’s culmination is another’s new beginning and yet another’s abyss. The abyss is nihilism. The challenge of such a Big Idea as The Culmination (the event, not the title of Robert Pippin’s book) is to weave the hermeneutic tapestry of the meaning of Being (Sein) as disclosed in poetry, aesthetics, and the life-world, while coaxing the lumbering Hegelian camel of German Idealism through the eye of the narrow needle of Dasein’s (Heideggerian) finitude. The world and entanglement are disclosed in a nondiscursive (preconceptual) manner as mattering. The way forward in philosophy lies through innovations in “mattering”—not a conceptual sense …
Assessing Knowledge, Attitudes, And Consumption Of Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine Among Filipinos Post Covid-19 Pandemic, Jane Yugioksing
Assessing Knowledge, Attitudes, And Consumption Of Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine Among Filipinos Post Covid-19 Pandemic, Jane Yugioksing
Social Transformations Journal of the Global South
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in the Philippines has existed as early as the first wave of migrants but has remained confined within a prescribed settlement in the Manila district known as Parian. Over the years, TCM has existed independently as a modality of treatment to improve one’s health, mostly catering only to the Chinese in the country. At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Philippines’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of the TCM capsule Lian Hua Qing Wen as part of the COVID-19 treatment option, which was highly patronized by the mainstream Philippine society at that …
State Narrative Dominance In Terrorism Reporting: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Kompas Coverage, Putri Khairunnisa
State Narrative Dominance In Terrorism Reporting: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Kompas Coverage, Putri Khairunnisa
Journal of Terrorism Studies
This study examines Kompas.com’s news construction of the bombing at the Makassar Cathedral Church on 28 March 2021 by integrating Entman’s Media Framing theory with Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis. Using all news reports published between 28 March and 5 April 2021, the study finds that Kompas frames the event through security-oriented diction, agent–action structures that foreground state authorities as the primary actors, and high-modality statements that minimize uncertainty during the early crisis phase. Intertextual references to previous terrorism cases accelerate the labeling of the perpetrators as part of the JAD network. At the level of discursive practice, reliance on official …
The Influence Of Naturalness On Grocery Shoppers' Purchase Decisions In The United States, Rebecca Neusner
The Influence Of Naturalness On Grocery Shoppers' Purchase Decisions In The United States, Rebecca Neusner
Honors Theses - Providence Campus
The term “natural” and naturalness labeling have increasingly been used on food packaging for a largely disinformed public who associate naturalness with qualities that are often not present in the products that display it. This survey-based study examines the influence of naturalness on the decision-making process of grocery shoppers in the United States. Survey responses were analyzed to determine the value participants place on products with naturalness indicators and to identify what other attributes they prioritize when shopping. The results indicate that participants value naturalness and price in their purchase decisions more than attributes such as brand or appearance, and …
The Seed That Begot America: How Political Principles Of The Reformation Contributed To The American Founding, Gabriel Stisser
The Seed That Begot America: How Political Principles Of The Reformation Contributed To The American Founding, Gabriel Stisser
Senior Honors Theses
When teaching the American founding, the contemporary public-school curriculum tends to emphasize the influence of the thinkers from the antiquity and Enlightenment periods. However, the curriculum tends to neglect the impact that the Reformation had upon America's formation. Through a qualitative historical review, this study will analyze both primary and secondary sources to examine how Reformed ideals of the political covenant, limited government, and resistance to tyranny influenced the American founding. This analysis finds that the Reformed (sometimes called Calvinist) political ideals from the Reformation had a significant influence upon the formation of the New England colonies, the enlightenment figures …

Guiding The Story World: A Comparison Of Diegetic Cues In A Snow White Vr Narrative Game, Jiayi Xu
Guiding The Story World: A Comparison Of Diegetic Cues In A Snow White Vr Narrative Game, Jiayi Xu
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Virtual reality (VR) narrative games must guide players through complex story worlds without undermining immersion, yet prior work rarely compares different forms of in-world guidance under tightly controlled conditions. Designers routinely mix diegetic text, character behavior, and environmental motion, but it remains unclear how these cue families differentially shape cognitive load, task performance, and narrative experience when they convey the same instruction.
This thesis investigates how three common diegetic cue types—diegetic text, non-verbal gestures from a non-player character, and environmental motion and highlights—affect players in a first-person VR retelling of the Snow White story. In a between-subjects laboratory study, each …
Islamic Political Anti-Theology: A Discursive Practice Of Contingency Beyond Sovereign Politics, Jason Andrus
Islamic Political Anti-Theology: A Discursive Practice Of Contingency Beyond Sovereign Politics, Jason Andrus
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Contributing to the field of political theology from outside the European Christian tradition, this dissertation develops a description of the distinct logics that Islamic theology generates from its metaphysical assumptions. These logics in turn make possible a discourse of political anti-theology where politics operates through contingency rather than sovereignty. Political theology scholarship has excavated how modern politics derives from secularized Christian theological concepts—particularly transcendent sovereignty. This study demonstrates that Islamic theology's absolute insistence on divine transcendence (tawhid) produces something fundamentally different: a politics that renders sovereign authority conceptually impossible. I identify this discursive practice of political anti-theology through …

Frameworks For Repatriation: Moving Beyond Nagpra, Ashley Joplin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Museums and similar federally funded educational institutions have been collecting human remains since the Enlightenment era in the 1800s. Since then, these institutions have developed various collections practices that have encouraged the collection of human remains. Often unethical in nature, these collections have harmed historically marginalized communities, such as Indigenous and African American communities. While the ethics of collecting have been under scrutiny for decades, it was not until 1990 under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) that mainstream attention was drawn to the ethics of collections practices.
This thesis explores these collections practices and the repatriation …
Art And Critical Thinking, Audrey Nixon
Art And Critical Thinking, Audrey Nixon
University Honors Theses
The voice of art molds and dictates norms and behaviors of society. Art eases people into sitting with discomfort or alternate ideas of the world. I work with mixed-media collage to respond and react to culture and the current American political climate. Through the act of expressing and working through thoughts and emotions, art teaches people how to process, it teaches histories of resistance, and empathy. Artists have the ability to engage their audience to critically think about what is happening in our world. By channeling expression and passion, art can help people make necessary connections about concepts that lead …

Who Was It Truly For?: Bernard Bragg, David Hays, And National Theatre Of The Deaf, Eni Buckhanan
Honors Theses
National Theatre of the Deaf is known for being the first professional sign language theatre company in the United States; however, the complexities of its origins and founders are rarely examined. This thesis explores the relationship between Deaf performer and educator Bernard Bragg and hearing set designer David Hays, along with what was prioritized in the creation of the company, and the aftereffects of these choices on the National Theatre of the Deaf and their Deaf and hearing audiences.
Bragg and Hays began correspondence in 1966, as they developed plans for what would become the National Theatre of the Deaf. …
